    Buicks hold a special place in my heart, my mom learned to drive in a 39 that belonged to my grandfather. He gave her that car and she would never get anything but a Buick after that. In my lifetime she had a 59 wagon (angriest looking car ever) a 64, a 68, a 74 all Electra 225s 79 Last one was a 79 Lesabre.
    Thanks for the ride, keep them coming 👍

    This is an amazing car. The waterfall grill Buicks are some of the nicest looking cars from the postwar era. This one having a 3 speed is pretty scarce. I own a 1950 Super Riviera myself. 56k original miles.

    Hat’s off to this gentleman as these old beautiful Buicks are almost impossible to restore (almost impossible to find replacement parts). Just the trim parts alone, which there are no after market replacements, would put a dent in anyone’s bank account. A real sweet heart! That’s what I call design!! Thx again Lou!!

    Bold grille, like the colour, nice ornamentation, with chrome bits, wonderful styling when GM was at the peak of their game, amazing that back in the day you could just walk in and buy one. Those were the days of cheap gas and insurance so you could really enjoy your ride! This one is better than new I would say Lou! Graphic designers were a huge part of marketing in that era!

    Hi, Lou! Yes, I was definitely reminded of "Rain Man" when I saw the thumbnail for this video, although that car was a Roadmaster. It was in 1949 that Buick first introduced the portholes on the fenders, which became a marque identifier for many years hence, and also the year it brought out their first hardtop models, called Riviera. Olds and Cadillac did the same that year. Many thanks to you and Dennis for this classic ride!

      They seldom had to be downshifted, too. If you come around the turn in the road just step on the gas in 3rd gear and it takes off like an automatic. I'd bet the downshifts to second in this test drive were not needed.

Show beautifully redone and restored such beautiful colors inside and out the engine sound just like brand new the engine seem to have a lot of get up and go for a fireball V8. Look like it just came out of the showroom from 1949. He has such wonderful Buicks in his collection it's always wonderful to see what he has next. I enjoyed the Ride Along Lou that was wonderful the hood on that car look like it was 80 ft long. Could you imagine a car weighing almost 3 tons that's a lot of car. The actual curb weight on the 49 Super convertible was 3985 lbs. according to George Dammann's "70 Years Of Buick." I'm sure the shop manual would also confirm that weight.

    • @DejaView
      @DejaView Před 2 lety +1

      @@1940limited Thanks for the info. I was thinking that "near" 6,000 figure sounded like a bit much. Even near 5000 seemed hard to fathom although convertibles usually had heavier (stiffer) frames & then it's got the full hydraulic system for top, windows & seat but consider that in a "Super" they'd be lugging this around with a 248 CID engine with no more than 115hp as opposed to the much torquier 320 CID in the Roadmaster. (Couldn't find the exact stats on a '48 Super but a '50 "Special", the only series still offering the 248 that yr lists the base engine [w/ 3spd manual] as 115 so I doubt this would have been much, if any more, other than the Dynaflow cars which got a very small increase.) Must have been a real "powderkeg" w/ Dynaflow. Probably found yourself resorting to the use of manual "Low" rather frequently.
      Was very surprised that the '49 brochure I found listed the frame specs. The dimensions of the box section (I assume at largest point) AND thickness of the steel. I assume these figures are for sedans, no mention of convertibles specifically. Thickness for Super was 7/64th" & Roadmaster a slightly heavier 5/32nd", nothing near "1/4 in thick" as stated. (Wheelbase for Roadmaster was 5" longer & overall length up by appx. 6")

  • @fredanddebramacdonald2445

    The stick shift in these Buicks is extremely rare, as most were equipped with the Dynaflow automatic. The Rainman car was a Roadmaster, and was not offered as a stick shift. As I was born in 1949, I have an interest in these cars, but haven’t been able to afford something like this. I see them at Buick Club of America events and have to resist drooling over them!! These old Buicks are so reliable, that many of the owners drive long distances in them to various events.

    Many 49 Supers came with Dyan-Flow. It's nice this one is a "stick shift job" as the factory called it. These cars perform really well with standard transmissions and the silent helical gears. I had a 49 with stick and it was a pleasure to drive. I now have a 50 Special with stick that's mechanically about the same as a 49. The 49 Super and Roadmaster was a 1-year-only body style.

      g bridgeman... Thanks for the observation on the body style. Thought these were the most beautiful of all GM cars of the period. Sad that this lean & sleek design didn't see at least maybe a 3yr run. Always thought the "heavy handed" re-design of the '50-53 was a step backward. Kind of a bloated & "clunky" look with the lowered fender lines similar to the "pregnant elephant" look of Packard.
