  • The starwheel is an adjustment that allows you to change the AFC spring preload so the fuel pin advances down it's bore under more or less boost. This allows you to take care of low-end smoke and improve turbo spooling caused by excessive fueling in the low or no boost condition.

    I always get best performance and turbo spooling when I screw the star wheel all the way down

    more low end fueling and smoke at low rpms is what spools the turbo quicker

    On the truck, turning counter clockwise, towards the cab = less fuel

      unless you have compound turbos its gonna be a dog ! a stock turbo should have it screwed in quite a bit i did it all the way out and my truck has zero throttle response after half throttle turned it in and its a rocket ship

    Hello.
    I did this on my Volkswagen mk3 Turbodiesel AAZ engine, with the same VE pump ( there is a lot ve pumps used in this VW engine ) I have the exactly pump like in this video, but when i turned the starwheel counterclock wise, like the video, i noticed my car becomes lazy, like you killed 20 or 30 foot pound of torque turning it counterclock wise.
    I have a K24 Turbo on it, wastegate fully locked. ( 1.5 bar boost ) i turned the fuel screw way to high up, it idles at 1300rpm. and the idle screw is fully screwed out.

      You can adjust the throttle lever to another knotch and adjust the linkage. From there you can add more fuel after adjusting your desired idle. Not sure much about VW. For me clockwise 2 turns on star and 1 1/4 on smoke after setting fuel and idle seems to be a good happy medium with little to no smoke an good spool of the turbo. HX35W Non/IC 12v BHAF Filter and larger intake horn. No grid heater. I think I'm somewhere about 30-40psi boost.

    How do I clean the inside of the pump? Pulled the top of to do governor spring and lots of varnish in there??

    @MetalManiac95 Před 7 lety +2

    I've always been told that you turn it two times clockwise instead of counter clockwise?

    • @themadmailler
      @themadmailler  Před 7 lety +1

      that reduces spring preload, increases pre- and low-boost fueling, causing excessive smoke.

    • @AmericanThunder
      @AmericanThunder Před 5 lety +2

      @@themadmailler The extra fuel pre-boost is what causes the turbo to spool quicker, but it does create more smoke off idle.

  • @northernflockvlogs7693

    What would happen if I went 1 full turn clockwise? Would more smoke come out and would the turbo still spoil decent

  • @RailRoadCar9
    @RailRoadCar9 Před 3 lety +1

    @themadmailler your vid is from 2015 was looking for your long term opinion on this mod , do you still think raising it is the best option? i'm not looking for smoke looking for power & efficiency thanks..

  • @05fxd58
    @05fxd58 Před 6 lety +1

    so you went counter clockwise, i see a lot of guys going clockwise. saying more fuel less air, your getting more air correct? seems to me more air is more efficient? can you elaborate on how thats effecting your turbo? its not overworking that turbo?

    • @themadmailler
      @themadmailler  Před 6 lety +4

      What the starwheel does is change the preload on the AFC diaphragm spring. when there is more preload on the spring, it takes more boost pressure to overcome the spring, push the diaphragm down, and advance the fuel pin down it's bore, allowing the IP to deliver more fuel. Turning the wheel counterclockwise increases the preload. The reason i do this is that it allows the engine, when it is accelerating under a load from idle, to not get flooded with too much fuel (creating smoke) before the turbo spools up. It takes engine RPM and load to make a turbo spool. The reason a lot of other people turn the wheel clockwise is because they are idiots that like to make excessive smoke because they think it looks cool and/or makes power. However, smoke does not equal power, in fact it wastes fuel and prevents full power output. Lastly, you can't really "overwork" a turbo, but you can operate it outside of its intended limits. This happens when the wastegate is not properly adjusted, thus causing boost pressure to be too high.

    So, as this is contrary to popular star wheel methedology, what you are saying is: star wheel in= more fuel too early, leaning it out will get the turbo to spool quicker? Are you watching your EGT's? You sound like you are keeping track, I'm interested in your findings when it comes to performance after doing this. I see you have more aggressive fuel pin. Did you add more fuel with the main fuel screw?

    • @themadmailler
      @themadmailler  Před 6 lety +1

      What the starwheel does is change the preload on the AFC diaphragm spring. when there is more preload on the spring, it takes more boost pressure to overcome the spring, push the diaphragm down, and advance the fuel pin down it's bore, allowing the IP to deliver more fuel. Turning the wheel counterclockwise increases the preload and prevents over fueling when boost is low. in my experience, lots of fuel under low boost makes high EGT's, low power, and lots of smoke. screwing starwheel up prevents this. Some people will also swap the spring out for a stronger spring (THD sells these) and/or flip the starwheel upside down to gain more spring compression.

    Where did you get your pump gasket from?

  • @_Dylbilly
    @_Dylbilly Před 7 lety

    Hey there so I have no idea if my smoke screw or star wheel has been modified. I bought the truck with a newer "high power" injection pump on it. I see the max fuel screw has been turned not sure how much and the throttle linkage has been moved to the inner "closer" hole with a modified return spring. I have a he351cw, 3200gov spring and a dennyt stage 2 pin at least thats what the owner said was in there. I am very happy with the power but i dump way to much smoke on the low end. where should i start? I hear really good things about the BD pin and could swap that in. Should I start with the smoke screw and back that out? or should I start with the star wheel and back that out to put more preload on the spring?

    • @_Dylbilly
      @_Dylbilly Před 7 lety

      just opened up the AFC and did verify that its the denny t stage 2. spun the star wheel counter clockwise 2 full rotations. no noticeable change on smoke, power, or turbo spool. Gunna try the smoke screw, 2 turns counter clockwise...

    • @_Dylbilly
      @_Dylbilly Před 7 lety

      2 turns of the smoke screw and it may have cleaned it up a little bit but still smokes more than I would like.....I will turn both 1 more full turn total of 3. I did place an order with the hungry diesel for one of his pins. ill post an update when i get that installed

    • @themadmailler
      @themadmailler  Před 7 lety

      Denny T pin is junk! use the BD or THD fuel pin and that will solve many of your issues. back out the smoke screw until it is flush with the housing, and if you can machine the little raised boss off of the inside of the AFC top where the smoke screw is. use the starwheel for your final dialing in. you might need a stronger AFC spring depending on how much boost you have. Also, some people have used a boost elbow on the AFC boost pressure reference line to reduce pressure going to AFC diaphragm, to prevent the spring from compressing prematurely.

    • @_Dylbilly
      @_Dylbilly Před 7 lety

      Yep i backed out the smoke screw as far as i could and turned the star wheel flush with the lip inside and it still puts out a noticeable amount of smoke. I am very stoked to get THD pin, and it was nearly half the price of the BD pin. next thing to add is a PS intercooler with 3" charge tubzz on both ends

    • @themadmailler
      @themadmailler  Před 7 lety +1

      if you can't find a PS intercooler, a second gen dodge cooler fits. I think which one fits better depends if your truck is originally intercooled or not, but i'm not sure. my truck is an 89 and i used the dodge IC. it was a tight fit but it worked.

    Заводская настройка это на половину бред. Попытка совместить две функции. Это тупик. Оставлять нужно только одну функцию , это задержка подачи топлива. Контролировать количество топлива бессмысленно. Жёсткая пружина не нужна совсем.
