      Happened also in New York in 1960, I think it was. The Giants were having a bad year, last game of season, Cowboys first year in existance; they were 0 - 12; 5.'8" Eddie Lebaron their q'back; we started rooting for the Cowboys (only time in my subsequent life) and lo' and behold, the game ended in a tie and the Cowboys were 0 - 12 - 1. Don't remember what the Giants were. But all that was sandwiched by championship games in '58 and '59 and '61 and '63 (or somewhere thereabouts ; no matter; Giants lost all four; or were there 5? Seems like they lost to Johnny Unitas twice - the first called "the Greatest Game Ever Played", the Bears once (YA Tittle, head bleeding, squatting on the turf at the end, a famous picture of loss and frustration); and Vince Lombardi twice more both by scores of 17-3. Though maybe not. (Like the always helpful Nancy Reagan liked to say, A mind is a dangerous thing.... - or was it, This is your brain on drugs; something like that; or maybe Dare to Say No. Whatever she said, obviously I (like everyone else concerned) was not listening - and happier for it.

      I heard a rumor that he wants to be traded after this season and I don't blame him. I have lived in Michigan my whole life and have always been a lions fan and it's really frustrating to see them lose game after game year after year and I've said it time and again and I'm tired of saying it "the lions sure know how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory" and "well maybe next year" Having to watch so many great players crash & burn with the lions really sucks.

      He is actually highly overrated, and at his best was only above average. Number 1 overall pick who has not even elevated his team for one playoff win, and has only been to playoffs three times. No doubt bad GM's did not help, but excellent QB's can overcome this. Bill Belichek has made made lousy draft picks and free agent signings for years, and Brady still won despite this. Stafford's stats are generally mediocre (inflated playing in a dome and passing era), and he has been a lousy quarterback on the road.

Which is probably why everyone got confused when the refs took a timeout away from the lions when they didnt have one cause running it out would have ended the game so it's kinda of a catch 22 there.

    @larrycopeland2413 Před 5 lety +359

    Rules check guys: When a player is hurt in the last two minutes of a half, that team is charged with a timeout (as most fans know). If the team is out of timeouts - like Detroit was here - the ref announces an additional injury timeout "charged" to the team. It's one freebee that either team gets if a guy is hurt late in a half with no timeouts left. From there on, if that team (the one out of timeouts) had sustained another injury, then they would have been hit with a 5-yard delay-of-game penalty. So, for example, if Stafford had collapsed after throwing the last TD and not been able to get off the field, I believe Detroit would have had to kick the XP for the win from 5 yards back from normal.
    So, in the end, the officials got this one right.

    • @m2karateman
      @m2karateman Před 5 lety +8

      Not really true. Stafford got hurt on that same arm again, which forced the surgery he had in the off-season afterward. Also, Stafford is one of the highest paid QBs in the league, but has shown inconsistencies in his game. About four seasons ago, he looked like he had turned the corner and played well, while the rest of the team didn't support him well. But the past couple seasons Stafford has digressed, and is no longer a franchise QB. The Lions need to move on and find their next QB. Stafford will never be the one to take them into the playoffs.

      @@m2karateman Interesting fact: Stafford is 8-1 with a 100 yard rusher. Pretty crazy that after 10 seasons in the NFL he's only had 9 games with a 100 yard rusher. I understand the doubt and patience running out with it being 10 years, but it is hard to find success in the NFL for anyone if you can't run the ball effectively and consistently.

    1:36 is such an underrated play. Pause it at 1:40. The left tackle blocks down into the DT and the right guard pulls for the trap block on the D End. This movement specifically targets the Linebackers and Safeties reads so precisely, forcing the defense to take their first few steps up anticipating the handoff from the play action. At first glance someone might think the receiver just beat the defense long but in reality this TD was all due to the big men.

    "If an excess team timeout is charged against a team in possession of the ball, and time is in when the excess timeout is called, the ball shall not be put in play until the time on the game clock has been reduced by 10 seconds, if the defense so chooses." and
    "For the second and each subsequent excess team timeout after the two-minute warning: Loss of five yards from the succeeding spot for delay of the game."

Watching this game was a turning point for the Lions and the best moment since the 90s when Barry Sanders was scampering out of the backfield. Yes it sucked that Stafford went down for the year because of this game, but the guts he showed and his desire to win by going back out after the injury was uplifting. As a Lions fan, I knew there was hope for the team in the future because of this kid. That was enough to hold onto until the 2011 season and WOW he did not disappoint. Some have given up on him, but he's still the same guy and loves Detroit. As long as he's there, there will always be a chance. I'm curious about the injury timeout called for Detroit at the end. As the announcers stated, they had no timeouts. One announcer mentioned it should be a 10 second runoff in that situation. Eric Mangini for the Browns was pissed because they did not call that timeout.
    So my theory is this. There was already no time on the clock at that point. It was an untimed down. And the game cannot end on a defensive penalty. Therefore the player safety takes priority so the injury timeout still gets called, there is no longer any way to penalize the Lions who have no timeouts and you cannot impose the runoff in this odd zone where there's already no time on the clock. You can't take the untimed down away from them. So in that one odd circumstance, I think the refs ruled that the Lions are just going to have to get a free timeout, and the Browns and Eric Mangina are just going to have to suck it. :)

    I remember when this game went down. I was shocked that Mangini took that timeout, it's what cost them the game. Had Mangini let it go, Cleveland could have probably stopped them on the one remaining play of the game. Especially considering Culpepper was coming off the bench cold. The refs had made their call and taking a timeout to argue about it wasn't going to change their minds or the call on the field. Instead, the timeout only allowed Stafford back into the game to win it. I always thought Brady Quinn was a good QB and it makes me wonder if this is the game that mentally and emotionally destroyed him and ultimately his career in the NFL.

    For anyone who is wondering, the NFL rules allow each team one excess timeout per half, which can only be used in the event of an injury. Beyond that, each excess timeout costs 5 yards for delay of game, but you can't just call one of these timeouts. They're only for injuries in the final 2 minutes of a half.
    As for 10-second runoffs, those only occur if either
    1) the offense committed a penalty while the clock was running in the last two minutes of the half, or
    2) an on-field ruling was reversed by the replay official and the new ruling would have kept the clock running in the last two minutes of the half instead of stopping it.
    Additionally, the defense can elect to not enforce the 10-second runoff if it benefits them, and the offense can call a timeout in lieu of the 10-second runoff if they have any remaining.
