Some info on the car:
- The wobbly "baguette in a tub of butter" gearstick is very common, all of them are like that. The shifter is connected to the transmission via rods isntead of cables, so every bushing needs to be replaced, which is huge pain in "le cul".
- The indicator should cancel on its own, the stalk have to be replaced.
- I replaced my brake discs and pads with Brembos (same size as OEM) and the car stopped beautifully.
- There is no check engine light, only a big red "STOP" label in the middle, so watch out for that.
- The rear windshield washer spray nozzle is integrated into the third brake light. Not relevant to anything I just think it's interesting.
- Make sure the driver's floor mat doesn't slide around, because if it slides too much forward, it will hit the steering column and you won't be able to turn the steering wheel. You'll only notice it in the middle of an intersection. Ask me how I know.
The indicator is also a big problem of Peugeots in general, my gf had a 206 1.4 HDi and it had the same problem, it starts to wobble. My uncle had a 307SW, and the same thing happened, I spoke to a mechanic at the time, and he said they usually have that problem, but yea you have to replace it anyway.

There's also a connector under the glovebox that will mean the brake lights stay constantly on if it comes loose. I had one as my second car which I bought for £2k and within 12 months had spent another £2k on fixing it, it was an absolute piece of PooGoat.
There is a check engine light in the top right corner of the instrument cluster. It turns on when the issue is mild, red STOP light comes on when there are serious issues such as lack of oil pressure, coolant overheating etc. For every fault there should be a warning beep and a message with the fault appearing on the screen as well, but that I think depends on the year of production and trim level.
I own a 206 as a cheap runabout daily. I bought it with 31000 miles on the clock and did 10k in it last year. It runs fantastic and great to throw into corners. That said when I first got it (having been used to driving an Evo 6), everything felt strange and was not what I was used to. My biggest problem was when I pressed down the clutch my foot would hit the steering rack (I assume exclusively a RHD 206 issue). Outside of that I appreciate it for what it is and I now love it. I've always had Japanese or German cars, and sometimes I'd find them a bit sterile because they just have no personality. I've realised I like the plucky characterful feeling of little French cars now and I totally get the appeal and why people enjoy them.
I think the problem these have is if they aren't looked after they don't age well. Most people bought these as just a cheap shopping trolley and the condition of the majority of them reflects that. I imagine a very worn out 206 probably will be unimpressive, but when they are set up right they are awesome little things.
Fun 206 fact! In RHD cars, there’s a bar in the passenger footwell that operates the brakes! Peugeot were lazy when converting them to RHD so whilst you’re driving along, the passenger can use the brakes 😂
And they didn't mirror the wiper mechanism, so the top-right part of the screen never gets wiped! Which is fine for LHD, but pretty annoying for the driver on RHD.

Similar to how most of the air con system lives where the steering column goes with RHD 106s/Saxos, so in Japan the 106 and saxo was sold as LHD as air con is taken rather seriously in Japan.
A careless passenger can dislodge the brake light switch too.

I'm not sure if your 2008 will have it, but I used to have a 206 and the strangest thing with the pedals was if the clutch was fully depress then your foot would rub against the steering column

My brother had a 206 and I clearly don't remember pedals being that close together, I'm pretty sure it would have shocked me, could it be that's a RHD problem ?

@@davidbusch8912 Some time ago i found a 4wd 405 Mi16, blew my mind, i think asking price was under 8000€, wasn't in the most mint shape possible but a touch here or there woulda made it a worthy car to take to meetups or what have you.
with the gear shifts its probably the gear linkages as i own a 2005 gti with 220,000km that i bought in 2021 for only $1800 during the lockdowns and my gear linkages were rooted, i got aftermarket adjustable linkages and short shift and its makes a BIG difference. i wish marty got the gti as they are sooo much better than the model he bought.the only other mods ive done to it so far are pilot sport 4's and replaced all the stock speakers and head unit with 2 amps and 12 inch sub for big doof doofs. i have big plans for it to either forge and turbo the original motor or do a supercharged k-swap to go from stock motor 138hp to about 400hp, plus uprading the suspension and brakes. cant wait to see what u do to ur 206 marty 👍
I had one of these, well my mates and I did as our emergency break down car we shared between us, EVERY single thing you described happened with ours. It was diabolical in the wet (*le diable) then got the most random ever electrical fault that made Lucas electrics seem like Denso electrics... I am interested to see how this car is made to be "mighty"
Breakdowns & failures will just make for more interesting episodes..

Look after the rear suspension/bushing/chassis. At around 200k km, suspension mounts (or so) shred on the chassis. You can reinforce it from now or you will have to weld back the frame after
Yeahhhhh the pedals are very close together. Any time I've had to drive one, I've had to be barefoot to not hit all 3 pedals.
This thing is a proper nugget, so probably needs every bushing under the sun including shift linkages, and the brakes should definitely work better than that...

I just bought a 206 GTi (which Peugeot based their wrc 206 on) and am hoping to eventually turn it into the wrc 206. Plus I live down the road from these guys and I saw them filming this skit. Look closely at the end you’ll see a silver 206 at the roundabout 😁

The passenger can apply the brakes on these. There’s a bar running the length of the dash that link the brake pedal to the master cylinder.

@@trustfire Typical of many small Citroens and Peugeots of the time. They were built for the European market as LHD, with apparently minimal thought given to catering for RHD markets. The tube running from the pedals to the master cylinder on the left side of the car was the solution for the brakes.
I think it was the French engineers doing as little as possible to convert the car to RHD, purely to spite the British ;)
this brings back good memories. i had a 206 1.4 for 5 years and loved it, but it absolutely was DONE at the end of my ownership by 100k miles (i did the last 40k). it cost me more than the car was worth to keep it on the road, constant problems. i had zero suspension or brake issues though, and it was so light that i was always the fastest off the line at lights without even trying.. great fuel economy also due to the lightness. the seats thing got me too, passenger seat gave up the ghost and i couldnt tilt/slide it forward to get people in the back, right around the same time the coil pack went. sold it for scrap at that point but id 100% have another to hoon around in if i could!

I had a decent set of coil overs , Brembo calipers off a Peugeot 406, full stainless exhaust system , cams and a Simona intake . I made 157bhp :) it used to sound amazing !! Go for it !

Blinker is new stalk , I would also recommend polybushing as the wishbones just keep going and going …
From someone who has owned and currently owns an old French motor , Anything rubber will not last (maybe their condoms yet to try them) but the engines are generally solid and can take abuse
Fun fact….you can buy the centre console clock display from a 206cc and swap it over “plug in and play” and you’ll get more information like pictures of the door open and the radio station info etc. rather than just a clock and a beep noise 👍🏻

Im European, I worked for Peugeot Citroen. Everythings made from brital plastic and snaps easily, cutting ones hands. I used a lot of gloves and glue!

We have a 2001 206 1.4 with 130 000 km's and it's great. The guys are so right about the transmission. Gotta know juuuust the right angle to put it in reverse, otherwise it grinds. Oh, and occasionally it just won't go into 1st. Baguette in butter!
What you've bought there is a fairly well used 206.
The TU is a legendary engine.
Go try a 405 mi16, 406 v6 or sri, 306 s16/gti6 and 206 gti 180 for the fast peugeot experience.
The best feature of the bog spec 206 is the seats, the storage under the front seats blew my mind when I first saw it

The problem with French cars is that they’re not designed for RHD. But I’m actually stoked to see some French cars on this channel. Would be awesome to see more in the future including German and British

It here is another technique of rallye called talon-pointe.
Is push the clutch with the left feet, push with right feet at the same time on the brakes pedal et the throttle pedal.

The worn bushings for the shifter is an easy fix but unfortunately something you need once on a while.
Also you should get the GTI to have a good base for performance !
I agree, that was the mistake, he totally should have gone with the GTI. However I suspect it would have just spanked the swift far too much as the Swift sport is not a "GTI" car capable of competing with Europes GTI competitors, nor should it be at it's price point.
Ngl I was super disappointed seeing the Suzuki but Marty saved this adventure with the 206 and now I'm excited

I had one of these after I crashed my 106. I miss the 106 more than any other car. But the 206, mine was knackered. I picked it up for £250, electrics didn't work, and the body panels decided to move on their own.... Well, that might have happened because I was throwing it off jumps on the back lanes. I had a lot of fun in the 206 xD
These are just the epitome of french. I was driving one once wearing boots and while trying to come to a stop i managed to hit the brake, clutch and the throttle in one motion. Scariest moment in my life
I had the same experience in a Citroen AX GTi. Fantastic little engine, brilliant handling but all the build quality and user comforts of a shanty town house.

They reinvent everything, but are very lazy when it comes to converting cars to RHD.
They can't even give a proper glovebox for RHD models. And some are even able to press the brakes from the passenger because they simply had a linkage from the firewall where the LHD brakes would be.
I had one of these XSI model full leather with that engine sounds fantastic with a cone filter. The sound the cone filter made was the best thing about the car. Had a slight problem where the plastic oil filter housing would randomly get a pin hole in it pointing at the exhaust. Highly recommend a fire extinguisher haha.
the 206 was sold massively in the EU, that goes for the all gasoline and diesel versions, seen a few with 500k on the clock and still going, but the biggest problems on these french cars is mad and crazy electric issues..
I owned a Citroen C2 which is an upgraded version of the 206, way better head, same block, better valves and upgraded transmission, 1.6 gasoline engine, the C2 eats corners so easily and it's a really fun car to drive, the electronic issues are the same which kills the mood sometimes..

When you've bought a car that has no good parts, definitely the perfect platform for a track car. The problem with the Swift is that Moog did buy a nice mid-priced car that's perfect as a daily driver after a couple easy repairs.
There was a version called RC with a 2 litre 140-150hp engine. In Greece 206 had a big success and many modified it.
RC has 180HP, for example in the UK and some markets is called the GTi180. What you are referring to is the the GTi 2.0 (s16) with 138hp, can be flashed to 150hp.

@@mexibobor yeah, he bought the most basic thing ever, it's a long way from sportier versions of the 206, crappy gearbox, shitty suspension, weaker rear axle, basic trim inside and outside. The only good thing on this one is the engine which has been used in the Super 1600 rally class. Should keep the engine and bin the rest lol

this is one of the most common cars in Iran. IKCO still produces this car and sell it to people. we pay 6k USD for 206 and almost 22k USD for 206+ or as IKCO named it, 207.
To be fair, the car has 175 km on it and it’s obviously never been serviced, so it needs a lot of work, suspension, brakes, gear linkage, tyres etc .
Do you have something like , what us Brits have , an MOT test , to ensure that the vehicle meets a minimum standard to be allowed on the road, because there’s no way that the PeugBro would have a certificate.

I had a 206 1.4 when i was a teen (18) i drove around a bend at 100 mph i miss judged it and i ended up in a spin the back end went into a 12ft wall then the front end it carried on spinning banging into the wall for around a mile. The car drove me home after but was a right off i was fine not a scratch on me. The next day i went back to the scene to see the police was there because a women drove into a tree at 30mph and died on the same part of the road i feel so lucky that i was silyl doing 100mph and didnt die and some inccorent women doing 30 died. I will never act silly again. The 206 saved my life and changed my life.

Good ones are getting pretty rare in Europe, so I reckon finding one in Aus would be a challenge.
They have their quirks and always like mixing porridge or soup looking for gears (Usually just a small rubber ball type bush to fix), but they are predicable wghen things break most of time which is what makes them ppopular probably, the pedal spacing issue I do believe is if you prefer spirited driving, although again typical french electrics etc, the modern ones have fiat engines and just as bad electrics, but then Opal/Vauxhal/Nissan/Mercedes/BMW etc most of the manufacturers in europe are running stuff from the Peugeot group, which of course for years has included Citroen and Renault.
This reminds me of a small transport truck/van we had at one of my previous jobs. Changing gears were like going on a venture and never knowing what you were going to find on the end of the journey. "is this first or third? Nope, it was reverse!". That poor thing had a hard life and i think it was a bit over 60000km since the last service when it came to my company. One good thing though, it was pretty quick even fully loaded!

My old 206 was in basically the same crap condition as this one, and I didn't really bother looking after it. The thing that surprised me though, was how well it lasted with me treating it like a complete nugget. I had it for 14 years, and it passed MOT's all that time, despite me spending almost no money on it.
I still think the 206 is a good looking car though.

hey mates ! Greek here and im super excited you started exploring European cars!!! It would be amazing if u could find a pegeuot 106 1.6 16v rallye !! Those little shitboxes had been a crazy trend especially 90ies and 2000s resembling a lot to the japanese little nuggets!! crazy turning and the most oversteering fwd vehicle u can find by factory!! Their engines rev high, gearing is super short and with some tuning i think tha car would kinda impress you !! Here in Greece it used to be the antagonist of Honda Civic 1.6 VTI typer... Im really curious how you d react to that car!! The 206 is bigger more"stylish" but not as much fun, the engine is torquey and with decent grunt but not as thrilling as the 106 engine... ...yeppppp it would be cool if Moog found a peugeot 106 to modify and throw it against Marty s yellow civic type r !
Well tbh they started long ago with VW, which probably covers 50% of the entire European market considering all the sub brands like Skoda and Seat are basically rebranded VWs. The BMW was nice too.
@@Gornemant there s a lot little nuggets from 90ies and 2000ies they could try out ..one of those mad nugget is Fiat Punto Gt light and wild bully of the road in the 1.0-1.6 category back then...you can do the classic tuning...u can make it big block swapping head from 8v to 16v and block from 1.6 marea engine engine ...you can even try to stuff in the 5 cylinder engine of fiat coupe (amaaazing engine) or you can scrap all 5hat and go straight to the fiat coupe itvself...legendary car! And what about Alfa romeos? Did you get those? 156 or older alfa 33boxer lots of nuts cars!

I've had a few Peugeots, 205 309 306 406 and also a 206 gti180. It was around 3 years old when I bought it, it was rubbish then. Build quality, electrics, surprisingly slow. Bought a clio 182 instead, no better really but handled so well on and off track.
The shifter being as precise as a meth addict trying to defuse a bomb is a safety feature from factory.

Peugeot 106 had a flaw where if they got into a front end collision, the engine pushes the pedals up and snaps your shins.
The Peugeot 206 is one of the of the Euro super mini's (B-segment) the higher performance ones were machines for getting points on your licence,

Mum had a 206 and 206cc if you put you're foot fully down on the clutch and turn the steering wheel, you can feel the pedal move with the steering rack. Very weird....😅
My first car was one these with a 1.1 litre engine. It was slow but wasn’t too bad since you could hit 50mph in second gear. Mine was in pretty good condition but the gearstick was still like that. I didn’t think the pedals were too bad though, I learned to heel and toe in the car too
You should do a build challenge where you each have X money to buy a car and X money to mod, buy/mod them in secret (one in each garage) and set a round of challenges to see who has the best car, points for wins, looks, mods
I'm sure you didn't know that but if passenager kicked the switch behind glove box (You can see by under dash), if switch was shifted enough cause brake light stay on.
When i see a 206, i cant help but think of a rally car. So it should have potential. Cant wait to see marty rally that thing out. Short shifter, suspension, ajusting the foot pedle's . Lot more work than the swift. But loads of potentia

the 206 chassi is proper amazing. With the 1.6 or 2.0 and some mods it's a fun car.
My wife had a 206 here in the UK and it was the biggest pile of poo ever build. Everything broke on it, intermittent immobiliser problems, coolant leaks, electrical gremlins, fuel pump, the cooling fan chewed through some coolant lines and eventually the whole back axle failed. It invented new ways that cars could fail lol.
Thoroughly enjoyed the hardstyle, reminded me of my days as a youth popin’ pingas
Cheap shortshifters can be bought for this car from China! Alternatively you can buy versions with tighter tolerances from the UK. Both work great!

The pug will take this battle easily. Do the suspension with a cheap shocks and springs slightly lowered, new clutch and brake pads and decent tyres and a service and it's ready to go, no expensive mods needed.
In the UK we got the 206 GTI which was 180hp and 2 litre as standard.
That pedal layout is my overriding memory of driving the 206 - some French cars are amazing to drive but not a fan of the modern Pugs.
And yeah I bet nobody has wound the mileage back - they just don't last.
We just replaced our first bushing after nearly 20 years and over 200k. And we drive it swiftly with three young children and a mother that’s always late. Either this has been extremely misused, or it has more experience than shown on the clock.
It was the same with 2sexy. The car screamed budget and the model was very plebeian. Now they're close to 20 years old and cheap. In a few years most will be scrapped and gone from the road. In other words, the perfect car for a cheap project. You choosing this car is a nice shootout to euro car culture (ignoring the Volksworld). I'm looking forward to see what you can do to it :)

i have a Peugeot 107 for a "track car" it is used in a cup with only B-ZERO platform car's (107, C1 and Aygo up to 2014) they all have the same suspension, 990cc Toyota 1KR engine and built to follow the same reg. (same shocks, springs, bushings etc) the car itself cost under $2000USD and the kit is 3500-4000 and you get some more parts. all in all your at 5000-10 000USD for a top spec car to run in endurance races. you can make a "competitive" car for around 3-4000USD if you know what to do (welding your own cage etc)
it had ben PERFECT to send 5-6 car's "down under" and you se two + some others make a car under the same reg and race them for 90min to 2 hour's on the track (or whatever max allowed for one driver stund is down there) i gues "tuning fork" will have to have a different seat then moste of you ;)
I agree with Moog, when you drive this - you want it to end a soon as possible
