Hence the reason a big gap in the midfield. Ten hag Cant play high press with these defenders, so the logical thing to do for the defenders is to stay back and guard the runs. And you cannot attack with just 4 players upfront these days you need the midfield joining in to build up play. Hence these gaps. If he gets the players he wants this summer and clears out some deadwood then we can better judge Ten hag style of play etc.

9:15 You didn't mention Casemiro, who is supposed to be the 6. He's up near Hojlund. Whilst I agree with a lot of your analysis I think that you’ve gone too hard on Man United and not dug Liverpool out enough. They were incredibly wasteful. They had 28 shots and only 7 on target. United’s midfield was nowhere to be seen, as you pointed out, and that meant Liverpool basically had a free run up to United’s 18-yard box on so many occasions and yet the two goals they scored were a corner and penalty. Awful in front of goal from them. There’s no way that side can continue being this complacent and sloppy and win the league. Neither Arsenal nor City would’ve let United have a sniff today. So poor from Liverpool.

The biggest issue Liverpool had was they were given so many good options whenever they got the ball the player on the ball was not sure which one was the best. It was ridiculous, so easy to get to the 18 yard box but then you could shoot because of lack of press, space out wide players going through the middle, but what to choose.
Then we'd go wrong or butcher the finish, but united just wanted to counter and they made us focus more when they parked the bus and tried hanging onto the 2-1 win. It became a tighter game for space but instead of too many options there was only one or two in and around the box.

When u talk about united there are things that should be discussed about the squad , the attitude of some players are disgusting.
-Bruno always looks for a hollywood pass and does not keep the ball.
    - Rashford without goals is useless
    - Ageing backline and it's injury concerns
    -Casemiro almost lost his intensity
    - Wingers not looking for the striker.
    - Is it worth keeping McTominay for his goals or sell him for a proper midfielder.
    - Ten Hag's shocking substitutions and overdependence on flair players to somehow win the game.
Unless there is a proper clear out this summer no manager can save this team.

Totally agree with you about the tactical structure of this United team. We're constantly caught between a pressing front 5 and a low defensive block and it leaves massive gaps for opponents to counter into. However, I disagree with you that we're the luckiest team in the league. Injuries have decimated this squad, as I know it has for many other teams this season as well. Agree with the Cruyff quote but I also agree with the statement 'at the end of the season, the league table never lies'. This United team have won a lot of points this season from moments of individual quality. This doesn't make us lucky in my opinion but does mean we're unable to push on and create a sustainable way of winning games. We have got to do better.

Yea I cannot fathom thinking we’re a lucky team. We have a penchant for scoring late goals, but that’s part of the clubs tradition… think it’s a little silly to call it luck. We’ve had inarguably the worst injuries of any team this year + Greenwood/Sancho were basically no longer options overnight for various reasons. Our squad has been decimated. Completely agree with his analysis though lol.

We've certainly gotten points out of games due to worldies and moments of brilliance or McTominay somehow scoring a goal or two, but we've also been robbed out points, too. In the past 2 games, we've been robbed of 5 points due to a ref's/VAR mistakenly giving 3 pens that weren't pens. That's not luck or unluck.

With Harry in the back line the defence cannot step up. But ‘this is Man United’ so we aren’t allowed to sit in a low block owners, fans and definitely the loudest voices in the punditry and internet tacticos such as yourself (see analysis and punditry after 0-0 @ Anfield). Apart from United fans, only Loz is willing to point this out, why?
In the summer just gone, Maguire accepts a pay cut to join West Ham (fee had been agreed), ETH can get a back up CB who fits the system, more in the mould of Martinez. There just wouldn’t be this nonsense narrative that a world class coach can’t coach.

  • @sinclairwhitbourne2090
    @sinclairwhitbourne2090 Před měsícem

There is excellent analysis here, along all the usual lines, but what I wonder is this - the evidence is that ETH can coach. Additional to his Ajax record, there is his first season at MU where, aside from the minor matter of the Ronaldo and Sancho crises and the whole Glazer business, he won a trophy in his first season and dragged an incoherent squad up to third in the EPL and the final of the FA Cup and finals of Europa. It isn't as though he just took over a side that was humming and had been winning everything before he arrived. He has a better record over his first 100 games in England and Wales than Klopp, Guardiola, Fergie (actually not so hard - Fergie's first 3 seasons were pretty hair-raising).
So, the easy step is to critique what the side is doing. Everyone is doing that. Is the real story not in trying to work out 'why' the side has the shape it has this season?
A stat that intrigues me is that the shots on goal are very close despite the gap in attempted shots being terrifying - usually about 45 billion against and a handful for. The XG is always just as horrendous. Might there not be something to investigate in that? When I am looking at a case for a client, I am trying to find the most likely narrative based on the facts and evidence (not the emotion), so that I can build a case for my client that is as close to that as the facts and evidence permit. I look for the facts and evidence that run counter to the obvious and that seem to be hard to explain. That is where the case can be won or lost.
I am not an expert in soccer/football. I played it as a kid and have followed MU since 1977. However, I get more from other sports - not an attempt to downplay the biggest game in the world, just a statement equivalent to saying I prefer one type of music over another. I can't bring a deep level of analysis to a sport that is not a primary interest. But, surely the fact that a squad depleted by injury in the very area that is central to what ETH did at Ajax (the defenders, playing out from the back) and with so many other easily identified issues, plays this way and defeats a Liverpool side twice in a row, when that side has lost very few games, despite a huge shots on goal and XG differential is where the real story might lie?
The alternative is that ETH is an idiot/out of his depth etc. That MU are bogus etc. That it is all just dumb luck. But are Liverpool and Klopp really that passive and average? All possible, but somehow it seems unpersuasive, when weighed against facts and evidence and that stat which seems so hard to explain.
There is a saying in military circles that an organised, coherent withdrawal is far harder than a sweeping offensive movement; that cutting your cloth to what is available is harder than doing the expected, the orthodox. Maybe, maybe not. You and others have the expertise if you care to take the extra step. Maybe you have and I am not literate enough to read it. At any rate, an enjoyable analysis and I thank you for the time taken on it.
And, yes, the AWB penalty was clear, as was the Dalot one the week before. Not because I wanted them to be penalties (I really didn't), but because if you present that picture to a referee, it would be strange indeed if they did not award it. We live in the world that is, not what we might want it to be.

But everyone is blaming eth for not beating everyone.
Last 3 games we were leading goign into extra time. Yet the shit mentality and low iq from the player he has to play who are all backups make stupid mistakes.
ETH is defo not immune to criticism but people have been on hos neck since day 2 with G nev and cara interrogating him after brentford in year 1. Ever since then the screaming has never stopped.
I trust eth. Rather him then all the other managers available. The amount of players who have had their best season under eth is crazy. Rashford, wan bissaka, dalot, maguire, luke shaw all have had their best united season under ETH. Not only that he has been perfect with our youth. Bedding in garnacho for his nearly 40th consecutive start, mainoo killing it and kambwala looking really good.
I mean ffs 4 of our players in the 1st team were under 21 and 3 players on the bench were under 21. He is great with the youth.
