- Metoprolol (& Beta Blockers) Weird Side Effects (Skin, Gastrointestinal, Psychological)
Metoprolol is a beta blocker used to treat hypertension, anginal chest pain, congestive heart failure and myocardial infarction. It, like other beta blockers, acts to inhibit or “block” the binding of catecholamines (like epinephrine and norepinephrine) to the beta 1 receptor in the heart, reducing heart rate and reducing renin release to ultimately reduce blood pressure. However, due to this mechanism, beta blockers can cause a wide variety of side effects, which we discuss in this lesson.

The gross amount of fatigue metropolol caused me was ruining my life. I told the cardiologist that metropolol was garbage and to get me off of it. He switched me to Losartan which does little to reduce my blood pressure. These heart meds and doctors are quackery if there ever was such a thing.
I have been on Metoprolol for almost ten years, I am always doing something active everyday. Never had that issue
I've got that terrible fatigue issue too + my skin will just itch insanely! I also take Losartan. I get it. (Probably like you, I've tried to run down all other possibilities and can't find anything else making me exhausted all the time) Thanks for your comment!
@@wendi2819 Ok, I knew something was up when I was on that crap but never attributed it to being yet another side effect from that trash! Itching my arms and legs and ankles and everywhere all day all night long until they were bleeding!!
@@symptomoftheuniverse3862 Same here. I’ve been doing laps at the Y for years.
I’m old now so hanging out is my new activity. 😁
@@zink9991 I love to bike and yoga, have not slowed down yet.
I took this medication for 7 years. My blood pressure has been great but my pulse has been extremely low. (39-57 bpm) Probably the main reason why I have been so tired and depressed the last few years. Been off Metoprolol for almost 2 weeks now and I feel WAY much better! Been going to the gym and getting my energy and weight back on track. Current blood pressure reading is: 128/88
Well this explains a lot. I was wondering why I was so tired all the time. Now that I’m not working so much overtime I’m still very tired. All the time. And looking back, it all started when I started taking Metoprolol. Will be talking to my cardiologist very soon. Thank u.
Been taking it for years. No problems.
What I like about your video is that you get to the point! Thank you!!! Subscribed!
I had horrible GI issues on this. Doctor kept telling me it wasn’t the med and to keep taking it. I had many tests which found nothing and lost 25 pounds in 6 weeks. I also woke up with a 115 heart rate most mornings. I also had burning skin. I was on a low dose. I finally stopped taking it and all my issues went away.
did you have issues with your taste, like a nasty metallic taste in the mouth
Very comprehensive overview. The best I've seen from a medical professional. TYSM!! You talked about the Pluritis as well as the increased risk for diabetes. You also mentioned the fatigue and several other symptoms that many pharmacists I've seen on YT talking about this medication do not mention.
Very useful information , Thanks 🙏🏽
Great information, better than what my doctor had. Thank you.
Hairline bone fractures and edema. Intense pain everywhere, but the bone/joint pain was beyond.
Have the same, also weight Gain, should i try Propranolol or Atenolol
Excellent video. Thank you
Great information!
I’ve found that metoprolol succinate is better tolerated (long-acting). I’ve been taking it for years (retired MD of 35 years) for PAF.
I had a massive heart attack at 49, my dr told my husband my chances of survival were under 50%.That was 2015. I take Metoprolol, I can do a ten mile bike ride and my heart never beats too hard it is weird.
Very informative 👏
Thank you! I was diagnosed with AFib 3+ years ago and have had strange itching issues ever since I started using Metropolol Tartrate (Lopressor)! New doctor recently changed me to Metoprolol Succinate and I'm not itching. Knock on wood! But this video is the first place I've found where it said it could cause an itching problem.
Great and easily understood delivery 👍🏾. Does this apply to all blood pressure tablets like amlopidine (spelt wrong sorry)
I had lots of side effects from this medicine. The only benefit I got was that I had no migraines while taking it. Worst thing is it gave me severe depression after taking it for about 18 months.
I’ve been taking metoprolol forever, but these symptoms just started about a week ago
Check the manufacturer. I had a bad reaction to mine after the pharmacy changed manufacturers. Not sure what they did to those pills but I got a bad batch. Just a thought.
Sir please make video on medicine prefix and suffix . and thank you for all useful video's.
You could also add negative infuence on thyrax and thus low free T4, meaning most organs don’t work optimal. As a non medic I analysed a patient and metopolol studies. Told the cardio doctor to stop, which we did and let to progress. Metoprolol is much too often as a general medication without taking into account the nasty effects
Thank you 🤩🤩🤩
Also used for AFib!
With the same side effects.
Ive been taking it for bp and anxiety.
On it a week for Afib. Foul bowl odor, feels like walking in a marsh and out of breath in 10 feet. I was already out of breath from my PAH so this is only increasing discomfort. I may die sooner than I would but for me quality of life is more important. I am in my 70's and younger people will look at this differently but I am ready to go and not while on this stuff or blood thinners.
What will REALLY give you a boost is some bio-active B-12 under the tongue drops…
It will help greatly with the BP issue as well…👀🔥
Most folks your age are low enough in B-12 to really start causing some problems.
Please try some.
It can’t hurt you.
No@@rebeccagarner2576
I so agree with you on this.
Linda Merrick I have the same side effects as you do. I am 76 and ready to tell my Dr to find something else that is natural and not poisonous.
Allergic rhinitis! May be rare but extremely annoying to have a constantly runny nose.
Ha now I know what's up...I thought runny nose was allergies
Especially after eating!
I also have a constant runny nose! I was blaming my allergies. I have also said that water gives me heartburn!
I've got the metoprolol diarrhea, which is annoying. The alternative is afib and heart failure, so I'll put up with the diarrhea.
Been on netro. For yrs. So long i forgot. Wiw. I have several side effects lived with.
Could taking this mimic sciatica pain?
Ive gotten to the point that Im always cold, unless Im working hard or exercising. I also have vertigo when I stand-up, especially in hot weather while working hard. Some dry mouth at night, but havent noticed much else. My tastes have changed, but I tend to think its aging & some other things I went thru.
These are from Metoprolol?
What's the pathophysiology of the fatigue in the context of metoprolol?
I think it depends on the dosage as well. Higher doses more side effects.
I've been on a new beta blocker (Bystolic/nebivolol) for years with no side effects. It is much more cardiac specific than the older ones.
I was on Bystolic but my medicine quit coving it, and at that time there was no generic for it. He switched me Metropritol. I felt horrible and finally figured out why.
I quit when dizziness was causing falls and head banged on the ground. Wasn’t having any noticeable effect on B/P. Switched to magnesium in the evening. Blood pressures more stable and in desirable range.
When are you going to post the side effects of North American pit viper envenomation?
Dry Skin
Dry Mouth
Weight Gain
Hair Loss
Joint Pain
Constipation
Me too and hallucinations at night in a dark room it's scary
Took metoprolol for 1year after having STEMI. Month 12 developed oral lichen planus discovered by dentist after complaining of mouth pain. Referred to oral surgeon who gave 2 rounds of Dexamethasone syrup. It would relieve for 4-5 days then return. Read in some obscure source that it could be side effect of metoprolol. Stopped metoprolol and switched to Losartan. OLP stopped and no further issues.
It had my dizzy I can stand but was rocking back and forwards skin itching
Although rare, DO NOT underestimate the severity of neuropsychiatric effect of beta blockers can have on the blood brain barrier. Hallucinations, visual patterns reaching to infinity, walls and objects shimmering, tunnel vision. Delirium, unable to think or speak coherently, confusion, no reaction time, poor balance, getting lost walking the block. It took 3 or 4 days for symptoms to start, one month at decreasing doses at doctor insistence ( no change), and 5-6 days for symptoms to resolve after terminating. If you are going to take them, be aware and take care.
My hair was falling out as well as a complete change in its texture. It didn’t take color in some areas and I had to cut it because it caused it to get very tangled. I was in a very low dose
All Beta Blockers cause some degree of hair loss. Interesting because it’s never listed as one of the side effects. I took Metoprolol for two years. Prior to taking it I had a full head of hair. Afterward there was definitely hair thinning. I stopped taking it about 5 months ago. Since then my hair has definitely improved.
@@johnsimon9690 I was on calcium channel blockers as well, they did it too. There has to be some ingredient or something in common
Been on it for years with no side effects at all
Yes, would be great if all of the side effects of Metop could be replaced with a beta with less "issues"!!
My hair loss, weight gain are "big issues". Doctors dont know enuf to have an answer!!!
Brilliant 😢
Are you practicing here in the US?
Is this long term use
Curious if you are a medical professional or pharmacist.
Right now I take amlodipine and Lisinopril along with aspirin everyday for my heart. I was born with Kawasaki's disease and have had heart problems my whole life. Since my resting heartbeat is around 90 plus and my regular walking or regular day heartbeat is around 115 to 130 bpm My doctor decided to put me on metoprolol and it was the scariest day of my life I will never forget it I remember waking up unable to breathe no matter how deep of breaths I took I could not get any oxygen in my lungs and I started panicking and I knew I was going to die. This is an absolutely awful drug It lowered my heartbeat so low that I could not breathe at all I was thrashing around I couldn't even scream it was just awful imagine having a plastic bag over your head and being nothing you can do about it it was just terrible never never never again!!
My daughter went through all you tslked about, only difference...she died..just 51😒
@@jonnip7225 I am so sorry for your loss, no mother should have to bury their child, I don't even know you and you made me cry. It was so difficult and very scary with the metoprolol suffocation feeling..I panic and thrash around because no matter how hard or deep you breathe you can't get any air in. I am going to get my pacemaker and defibrillator soon so I hope I get a few or more years of life. God bless you with health and happiness...even though your baby girl (that's what I call my daughters 😘) has passed I can guarantee you she wants you to be happy and positive the best you can.
😢
This medication exhastebated my lupus
Thank you for disclosing this about your Lupus. I recently found out that the drug HYPALAZINE has caused DRUG INDUCED LUPIS.While in the hospital a big butterfly rash took over my face. No one told me, I couldn't see my self. I was in the ER because I was feeling well and that more vertibrae had fractured. 10 were known with 9 having had Kyphoplasty.
I’ve taken metoprolol tartrate for 12 years since my heart attack. Have been on half a pill, 12.5 mil since a year after the m I. I’ve had tinnitus at least 10 years and parentheses that travels to different body parts for about 5 years. Is my low dose enough to cause these symptoms after all this time?
Tartrate was harsh for me, I prefer extended release "succinate". 12.5 mil is very low but everyone is different. I developed MCAS which causes release of cytokines, leukotrienes, histamines, and inflammatories that give me on/off Tinnitus and migraines. Subtle the first couple years. I suspect my 12.5 mil metoprolol+ 5mil lisinopril were the final straw in activating an underlying mcas condition (with Tinnitus)
I was on a small dose of this for high blood pressure and the pain I would get in my stomach was crazy and no one seemed to know that it was the cause of the pain was
I also got a extreme rash on one shin only that got worse and worse
I stopped the medication and my gut got better and my leg too , stay the heck away from this one it’s nasty
Maybe for you yea but everyone reacts differently
@@max3eeyvery true everybody is different
Thank you. My skin has totally degraded. I used to have nice skin. I had to have a large cyst removed last year. Another one has formed beside it. I'm currently using castor oil on it every day....itchy skin, skin rash patches itchy. I'm wondering if it's affecting my nasal passages, I'm now getting nose bleeds. Anything on NOSE BLEEDS?
You should use high quality coconut oil on it. Best that is. It has helped me with skin issues.
At this moment, my right hand is half numb. It is relaxed, under no pressure but still numb and tingling. I have many of these symptoms and more. Nasty Medicine!
Hmm, I have one finger that goes numb a lot
I was haucinatimg.nothing frightening...saw tiny rowa of red pollen size dots in my field of vision and coffee grounds on a trash can that spilled on the floor. I didn't tell the nurses in the ER because I didn't trust them to record this properly or the hospitalist.
On in for migraines it's changed my freaking life in a good way but definitely had some taste bud issues with the taste of milk in particular. Extremely light sensitive and definitely feel cold in my hands and feet
My eldest son was prescribed a beta blocker when he was very young for abating migraines. It was brilliant reducing his migraine frequency and severity. Prior he spent many hours on many days in ED in excruciating pain.
Is metoprolol tartare same as just netokol
Sorry spelled wrong
Were your eyes sensitive to light?
Hallucinating badly seeing ppl in your presence.vmy dosage was 100 mg 2x day. Dr reduced to 1 per day. Should I be 50 mg instead of f 100 mg
In addition to lowering the bloodpressure, it cures anxiety.
Thank God for this medicine.😊
It helps a lot with anxiety.
My first day taking the medicine
My cardiologist told me to take Xanax , for my anxiety…. With metoprolol, who knows
For Anxiety always try B vitamins first. Low thiamine is hidden offender
You're spot on with my several of my symptoms being sides of metoprololnothing serious but glad to get the same diagnosis osis from abther I tell her it's because she's so darn good looking and sexy
So what can you do instead of metropolol
So many beta blocker videos and not 1 of them the narrator talks about if the more unusual issues like insomnia are more likely at higher doses or if they can occur even at 25mg daily. Infact I've not seen a single video that even mentions insomnia as a side effect, but it is. It makes it hard to know if a person's issue is their medication or something else. Thr doctors sure as hell don't know.

What is this metoprolol brand other name???
Hi, what med school are you attending or did you attend, and where is your residency?
I’ve been given this drug for essential neck tremors but I never hear comments on it. It does cause vivid dreams and nightmares which no one addresses. Maybe I should dump this drug.
My uncle suffers from these too. Horrible
Yes
How does one feel nauseous? It's medically correct (and linguistically correct) to say nauseated. Nauseous means something/someone that makes you feel nauseated.
You are a bit confused, the English language is confusing, I’ ll grant you that. Nauseous means feelings of nausea are present. You’ll get the nuances after you’ve lived here a few years.😊
Nauseating is what something does that makes you feel nauseated or nauseous.
I have no problems with it
I hope you can give me an answer to what has recently happened to me. I had a severve adverse reaction just over two weeks ago when a Metropolol tablet crumbled in my mouth and went beside/under my tongue.
Not sure if this is relevant, but 7 years ago I had a parotidectomy on the LHS, with 2/3 of the parotid gland removed. The tablet crumbled amd went to the left side of my mouth.
About 3mins after that I got the sense that my tummy didn't feel right like I need to go to the toilet.
Two mins later, I start to get tinnitus in both ears and ran to the toilet with diarrhea. The tinnitus got louder and louder until I could hear nothing else. I finish up on the toilet, feeling dizzy just made back into bed and felt like I was going to pass out with the tinnitus super loud. Gradually the tinnitus subsides like on a bell curve, but then remained on a quieter background level.
Immediately after I was left feeling completely "wired" hyper alert in a strange way, like it cooked my brain and was unable to sleep.
Since then, I've had chronic insomia, almost completely absent appetite (I have to force to feed myself), muscles aches and pains in legs, extreme fatigue and the constant amd ongoing tinnitus in both ears. Several days ago I got a transient episode of higher pitched tinnitus in one ear, on top of the background metropolol caused tinnitus. I wasn't able to sleep before 3am, and then only for an hr per night if that. I've since taken Temmazapan which gets me about 3-4 hrs at most, then I am wide awake again.
On the day and weeks before this event, I had been supplementing with NAC, Nattokinase, Taurine, Bromelain/Quercetain and a general mutli vitamin.
أنا ما فاهمه ولا حاجة يا دكتور
Bad drug gave me gastrointestinal symptoms ,double vision. Tinnitus ,and drunken feeling ,with balance issues ,i cannot take a medecine that has side effect that are this harsh.
What dosage were you taking?
How long did it take for symptoms to pass?
इस टॅबलेट से potassium बढता है, मेरा बढा था जो टॅबलेट बंद करणे पर नॉर्मल हुआ, cardiologist ने भी कबूल किया है की हर bp tab से hyperkalemia होता है.
Made me feel like I was tripping on bad lsd that made me sleep way to much, and pee out my butt!
I've been using this since I was 25 years old. I'm now 60 and take high doses due to tachycardia and mast cell activation which also causes my heart to take off, and I have none of these side effects!
@@Teacher659 I hope you are able to find the right medication to be on to help your mast cell symptoms calm down if only a tad! That's a long journey that I'm still on!
Just having comments that verify some of the side effects -- of Lupus and Cancer !! make me concerned why there isn't greater knowledge by Dr's, pharmacists, and the public.
I had the cold white tingling fingers on this this medicine. My doctor took me off of it.
Weight Gain!
Omg, so many of the side effects explained here. Horrible, horrible drug.😢
👍👍👍❤❤❤😎😎😎
Severe bad dreams lack of sleep. No appetite not feeling hungry. Loss weight. Is my side effects
Me again severe chest pains is one of my main problems not being able to breathe severe coughing fits.
All medications have side effects. Is there any medication in this world without side effects
Good old nettles.
Doesn`t bother me at all, as far as side effects, I have the same side effect, but mine are caused by PTSD, Agent Orange.
I take 100 mg a day …Would love to stop it
My Dr. Put me on this med. and I had all of these symptoms after 20 day's. Lost all respect for this quackery.
I feel fatigued constantly. When walking, I have trouble keeping up with my much shorter wife. I will have it looked into.
I can’t keep up with any body, I was the slowest person in the Denver Airport several times. You’ve probably seen me . Like in those dreams you just can’t go even tho you’re trying. 85 and 90 yr olds were passing me like I was standing still. And I pretty much was in spite of putting out quite alot of effort.
@cedarhatt-vx8kf Seeing the cardiologist tomorrow 👍
My uncle cannot sleep. His blood pressure is still high. He wakes up saying all kinds of stuff that makes no sense. This drug is garbage.
The worst side effect I got was my wallet became enmimic.
Totally pointless without giving some alternative !
Can Metoprol cause bad arthritis pain in hands ?
My husband complains of pain in his hands since starting metoprolol & he only takes 1/2 a 25mg tablet / day.
Also, much fatigue & shortness of breath & dizziness.
It's like taking LSD
I wish it were that good
