    What is metoprolol used for
Metoprolol is a heart medication that works by blocking the effects of epinephrine on beta-1 receptors within the heart, this causes the heart to pump more slowly and with less force. Metoprolol is available as two different salts: You got: metoprolol tartrate brand name Lopressor and metoprolol succinate, brand name Toprol XL. They are both used to lower high blood pressure and reduce chest pain, otherwise known as angina.
    How does metoprolol work
Both versions of metoprolol belong to a class of drugs you may already heard of: called beta-blockers. Like other beta blockers, metoprolol works by changing the way your body responds to some nerve impulses, especially in the heart. And when this happens, It slows down your heart rate and makes it easier for your heart to pump blood around your body and decreases blood pressure. When the blood pressure is lowered, the amount of blood and oxygen is increased to the heart and this resolves any chest pain and makes the flow of blood around your body run more smoothly.
    How to take metoprolol
The best way to take metoprolol, is how your doctor has told you to take it. There are so many different doses and variations that can be made with metoprolol based on different conditions, so the you have been prescribed to take it, is going to be the best way for you to get the most benefits from it. Strengths for the immediate release form range from: 25 mg, 37.5, 50 mg, 75 and 100. And strengths for the extended release range from: 5 mg, 50, 100, and 200 mg. Always consult with your doctor before making any changes. Especially when it comes to stopping metoprolol abruptly.
    Metoprolol side effects
Now its totally normal for in the beginning of starting metoprolol to have it feel a little rough. If youre experiencing headaches. make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Do not drink too much alcohol as well and Ask your pharmacist to recommend a painkiller. Headaches usually go away after the first week of taking metoprolol. But if youre feeling tired, dizzy or weak. stop what you're doing, and sit or lie down until you feel better. Dont drive or use tools or machinery if you're feeling tired and again, avoid drinking too much alcohol as this can make you feel worse. Another side effect that may be surprising at first is cold hands and feet. So my tips for this is: put your hands or feet under warm running water, massage them, and wiggle your fingers and toes. You want to avoid smoking or have drinks with caffeine in it as these can make your blood vessels narrower and restrict your blood flow. Mittens and warm socks can help too. Now if youre feeling nauseous: stick to simple meals and avoid rich or spicy foods. It might also help to take your metoprolol after a meal. Some even find this medicine to cause stomach pain: try to rest and relax. It can help to eat and drink slowly and have smaller and more frequent meals. Putting a heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach may also help. But If you're in a lot of pain, speak to your pharmacist or doctor.

I've been on this for 4 years now. Must eat something before I take it. It also makes me sleepy and I nap for half hour then I'm good. Your voice is so soothing, thank you for taking the time to help us. If you lived closer I'd send my grandson to deliver you some veggies out of the greenhouse.

Best way to manage the side affects are to stay off it. Change your diet abit and you won’t need it. I’ve taken it for 3yrs increasing my dose 3 times. I change my diet , I used some quality supplements and I am done with it. It made me dizzy, tired , and nauseous.

Supplements? Can you tell me what you take? Just put on this med with Busbar extreme anxiety couldn’t stop. I hate meds never doctor either. Was healthy until January…..had injury ankle turned weak ankle making me limp…not take walks. Depressed anxiety BP way off the charts. Referred to podiatrist. Going next week. Diet? I smoothie, no sugar in it small amount of blueberries. Wild ones. Nuts cottage cheese. lemon water (fresh squeezed) quit alcohol in January. (Maybe that is why my bp is up) kiwi’s chicken……very little red meat. Little sugar or processed. Need exercise! Dang it. Is it safe to bike on this med? Typically?

@@dessiecoder2116 I cut my carbs almost completely. No sugars, breads, junk food, pop etc. I only eat meat and vegetables. My type 2 diabetes is gone and blood pressure is back to normal. I take magnesium (glycinate) a quality vitamin B complex, vitamin D &k2 . You must research your vitamins to understand best absorption’ possible side affects and understand that some may interfere with your medications. Consult a doctor. Good sources on CZcams would be . Dr berg, dock stem eckberg for supplements and learning about them, diet too. Also dr ken berry, dr cywes. And many others should pop up in your feed as you go. Good luck on your journey and let me know how it works out.

After 1year on this med after having a STEMI I developed oral lichen planus. Originally treated with dexamethasone which would keep it at bay for 10-12 days. Then the symptoms would return. I finally located a reference about the in a study but cardiologist never heard of it. Stopped taking metoprolol and oral lichen planus disappeared.

I wonder if this drug might help me, I have suffered for years with Adrenaline dysregulation, diagnosed by 2 endocrinologists, after having some acth tests etc. meaning my adrenal glands overshoot when I get stressed, and I am very easily stressed. the adrenaline makes me freezing cold, I get nausea, and panic attacks. I have tried more than a dozen drugs. so far what helps the most is HRT, but I wonder if I should ask my doctor about this, I also heard this drug slows your metabolism, which I don't want, I am either exhausted or wound up, andseeing as I have gained so much weight since Menopause, and take thyroid meds as well, I am stuck. any replies would be greatly appreciated.

This led to significant palpitations and, a week long Holter monitor and six weeks of unknown ectopics or Afib. I take it due to a borderline long QT interval and have never ha da problem with it. But the drug messed me up. I am hoping to come off it.
