  • More upgrades and health check on the recovery trailer. Poor thing takes a beating and sometimes requires maintenance. This is an overview of how and why my trailer is the way it is, along with some changes and upgrades. Thanks everyone for watching and supporting us.
    www.trailmater.com is up, we are working on merch to hopefully be available very soon.

      The arrangement with the trailer wheels is typical of how Rory thinks, and pure genius. I have lost count of the number of times I have seen the trailer's front tyre collapse when scaling an obstacle and worrying it was flat. I have never dared mention it in the comments before though, because I have absolute faith that Rory knows what he is doing. I have also seen Rory do his end of video debrief to the camera, while one of the trailer wheels never stops spinning in the background. There must be a bunch of stored energy in those big wheels and tires.

    • @TrevorDennis100
      @TrevorDennis100 Před 2 lety +3

      Is this something that Matt of MORR started? Matt seems to look at CZcams as a business model and invest in it accordingly. Before I retired, If I needed something like a new clutch fitted to my car, I would rather do a Saturday morning overtime at my own workplace, and pay a mechanic to change the clutch. I'd stay warm, and not get covered in dirty oil, and still have some change after paying the expert from my overtime pay.

    • @DonAshcraft
      @DonAshcraft Před 2 lety +7

      @@TrevorDennis100 I think it's a pretty common business model to have workers in small companies that can do and have many different types of skills. You can hand almost anyone a GoPro and within a few days they're getting pretty good footage that can be edited into a channel. That's ahow most channel start out. As CZcams channels get bigger they tend to hire camera people and editors so their personal work load is less. Employees cost money, so that has to be a monetary decision to be made at the appropriate time.
      As far as the CZcams business model, once a channel hits a certain threshold of subscribers CZcams and Google will do everything it can to help you grow. More viewers means more ads sold. Google makes money and the CZcams channel makes money. If channel is one of the few CZcams channels that really takes off the monetary income is significant. Definitely not a unique business model, but a basic drive of a small business owner making it big.
      Matt @MORR has stated in episodes that his off-road recovering section of his business makes a very small amount of money compared to his tow truck wrecker company. However now that his CZcams channel has hit it big it's anyone's guess which makes more money his towing company or is CZcams channel. He now has an editing team of up to four people. When Matt first started out MORR it was just him and Ed and Matt's iPhone. It's a common growth model seen on many successful CZcams channels since their inception through to their success. I actually find it all quite interesting and I wish I was a successful CZcamsr! But no. I'm just a professional still photographer. Video scares me. 😆🙂
      It seems like the business of working hard and being smart is the classic business model.

    • @DonAshcraft
      @DonAshcraft Před 2 lety +4

      @@mrmotofy the hourly rate doesn't go to the mechanic. It goes to the shop and the business that supports the shop, including labor, utilities and tools. Not to mention taxes, accountants and everything else. Now if you want to complain about hourly work just take a look at attorneys! Lol

      I know, lots of videos recently! Always a good thing when I see the notification pop up.
      Agreed. Those, "your doing it all wrong" comments get on my nerves on CZcams. Especially with fabrication.
      It reminds me of what an old supervisor of mine said to me when I was much younger,
      "There are at least five right ways to do something correctly, and there are thousands of ways to do something wrong. Then there's my way because I'm the boss."

    Things make sense now. I always noticed the front axle was floating and thought it was bad geometry. Now I know it was intentional, and why. Having towed a lot of trailers (including a few I built), they tow nicer with the axle back, so riding on the back axle on the road is a good idea. Trailer lights are a challenge on a good day. Mine are in cages cuz I got tired of replacing them.

      I bet it's at least 800 lbs. There's a lot of 1/4" steel on this thing.. It's probably closer to 1400 lbs. I re-decked a regular 16' utility trailer with that same "cat walk" style grate-- with the 1" strips on edge. It really is an upgrade over a wood deck. It's a lot lighter, and quite a bit stronger at the same time... Plus when we have dirty quads or lawn mowers on it--- all the mud falls through at the car wash. Good stuff... and the scarp yards are usually full of it where I live--- because of all the oil field works around here.

Spent all my weekends and vacation time searching out remote back-roads of central Utah, and the western and southern districts of Canyonlands N.P.. The only upgrades I had were 31x10-1/2 tires and Bilstein shocks. The first time I drove up the Flint Trail, I was almost to the last switchback near the top in low range, first gear, and killed the motor when I went too slow up the steepest short ramp of the whole trail. I had rehearsed in my head how to use the CLUTCH CANCEL START SWITCH if needed, never touched the clutch pedal and it saved my day.
