4Runner Repair On Gold Bar Rim

  • A customer called about his 4runner with a broke axleshaft and a damaged front shock. The shop in California that built his rig managed to overnight us a new shock, so we got it and a new shaft and headed in to fix it. Once repaired and ready to go we soon realized that the other front axleshaft was also broken. We cut it out and left the 2 end pieces in place to retain the wheel bearing and the gear oil in the diff. We got it back to the shop and swapped in another new shaft. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

@Richard Gray I know! Another surprise. And it sure makes sense in that Utah desert heat! I think my favorite tool to date is the articulating sand anchor! (Seen a few episodes ago) Just genius! No trees to anchor the winch in the desert sand dunes? No problem deploy the sand anchor. ⚓

Mike, I like that you're trying out new camera angles. Rory, since Mater has everything under the sun for a recovery, what do you think about adding convenience options to her? For the summer, you could install a Mt Dew slurpee machine and in the winter, a hot cocoa machine. It'll be a hit, especailly for your daughter. I bet you that Matt and Paul never thought of that. You'd totally wrap up the King of the Wreckers title!

People these days give 2 link such an unnecessarily bad rap. I swear people ride around once in something like an Isuzu NRR or some old clapped out square body and start spewing how leaf springs ride like hell with no exceptions
I mean yeah it can absolutely be better - that's exactly why 4 link was invented and why suspension designs progressed - but there's definitely nothing wrong with it by default. It's anecdotal but my CJ7 is 2 link front and rear and rides MILES better than any other crawler I've personally rode in, both on and off road - I might even go out on a limb and say it's smoother driving than my daily driver 4Runner that's 20 years younger and with IFS+4 link.

Having followed Trail Mater for some time, it is only now that I see that Trail Mater is a manual shift. Rory, how many clutch and pressure plates have you changed over the life of Trail Mater. Trail Mater is genuine ''Old School'' leaf spring, still getting good flex.
The 4Runner equally a good vehicle. Owner must change the front and rear bumpers to give more clearance.

Rory, Toyota guy here. Depending on the "over" width of that LT kit by Total Chaos, more than likely those are actually Tundra/Sequoia axles that alleviate the CV angle problem you described. If those were stock arms I "might" agree with you. Toyota sway bar limits the suspension to about 5 or so inches of usable travel. Without sway bar connected it's 7 or 8.
