Did Hyundai get the 2019 Ioniq Hybrid RIGHT or WRONG?

  • For 2019 the Hyundai Ioniq is available in three versions: hybrid, plug-in hybrid or EV. We will focus on the Ionic Hybrid for this review. Under the hood is a 1.6L inline4 producing 106 HP & permanent-magnet synchronous AC motor producing 60 hp. This is all mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Has Hyundai hit the mark with offering a large range and nice, car like styling, and many interior features at a great price?

      Wow, I'm not getting anything close to that. My Limited claims 55 city and 54 highway. i have nearly 1200 miles on it just driving short trips around town (8 to 12 miles one way). The best mpg I get is around 48 and have gotten as much as 52 (once) . Driving more aggressively, I get at least 44.5mpg. I keep a notebook and do the math myself. My calculations show a lower mpg than the car computer shows. Fro the last 1100 miles around town I calculate 44.5mpg. Can't wait to drive it on a trip to see what I'll get on the highway. In my 60's I have owned a lot of cars. This one is my all time favorite. Fun to drive and great gas mileage.

    Got one in November and am very pleased with it. Has been getting better MPG then our other hybrid did, even in the mountains, the only drawback is it doesn't come with a spare tire and I'm still getting use to the slight hesitation in the transmission when accelerating from a stop.

    • @bubbalo3388
      @bubbalo3388 Před 5 lety

      You can buy a spare tire on the internet. In some countries the Ioniq does come with a spare. I would double check to see if it will fit your model though. I am thinking about one because if you get a flat where the the can fix a flat won't work, you are screwed. Also tire shops don't like working on flats with the fix a flat stuff because it leaves a mess in the rim.

    I know comfort is very subjective. I’ve never seen your reviews before so I don’t now what seat you consider acceptable. For me, in my 2018 Blue trim Ionic, the seats are very comfortable. I have zero complaints about them...and I’m a big guy 5’9” #255. Now if you want to talk about hard uncomfortable seats try a Honda Accord or Civic. I’d never buy a Honda for that reason.

    Hi Joe - 1st timer on your channel - Looking for objective reviews, I liked your review and have now subscribed. I was shopping for Elantra Sport when this one popped on the radar - I was impressed by the MPG's and now need to test drive one, probably a higher trim level though (for the wife). My only concern is how well the AC and heater work. I live in Wisconsin where we get the full weather spectrum. Thanks for the review!

      @numbr6 Před 5 lety +2

      We replaced a 2006 Elantra with the 2019 Ioniq Hybrid SEL. Gas mileage was the first selling point. The rest was handling, acceleration, comfort. Wife did the test driving of multiple cars, and the final contenders were the Kona and the Ioniq. We both agreed the higher gas mileage and larger interior were worth the slightly higher sticker price. We are getting 55MPG in mixed driving conditions, which includes large changes in elevation found in the Seattle area. The entertainment system, including Android Auto, is really great. Voice command phone calls "just works" and with zero voice training. We have not messed with "sports mode". Didn't know it was an option. That is one of the fun things about this car: there are so many selectable options you learn something new weekly. The default settings are conservative, but good. The environmental controls are a good feature. Set the temperature for the driver and the passenger, and forget it. Don't think about "it is 80 outside, must use air conditioning". Think "I like 74*F degrees, set and forget at 74*F, done." The wife likes 71*F, so the passenger side is set slightly cooler. It just works. Another data point: We filled the car 4 times since we bought it in February 2019, and have around 2200mi. That is over 500 mi / fill. Nice.

    I’ve had my Ioniq since June of 2017 and I can say I’ve had no problems with this car. In the city I get around 55-57 mpg and on the highway around 63. I don’t like the new color scheme with the light and dark accents on the doors and seats, but thats me . Also I think the seats are plenty comfortable. I drove mine to upstate NY from Florida and to Texas. I had no comfort issues. It isn’t the most fun vehicle in the world, but I fill up once every 6 weeks or so. It’s a trade off you make. Being a hybrid, it looks like a normal car, which I like. This was my first hybrid so maybe more seasoned owners have different opinions, but I’ve been more than happy with my purchase.

    @Charles Stanley I think you're OK there. We're not all talking the same language. My Ioniq uses 4.4 litres per 100km... That works out at 53.4 mpg (US) = 64.2 mpg (Imperial). We're seeing both figures reported in this thread. It seems like the UK drivers are getting 20% better mileage, but its just that an imperial gallon is 1.2 US gallons (miles are the same).

    A lot of people complain about the trunk lip area where they say they have to lift things over. Well they can't lower the bumper and if they raised the trunk floor to clear the lip then you would lose trunk space.
    I wish Hyundai offered all the features they offered in other countries like ventilated seats, heated steering wheel and a cargo net behind the drivers seat.
    The only negative thing about the Ioniq is the bad reward visibility but it's a sacrifice for the aerodynamic shape of the car.

    Hi Rick, as an advocate for the environment, you are not really stating the facts about how a hybrid can help our emissions and environment. Would be nice to get some of that data in there instead of saying "saves a tree or hug a tree". Other than that, great video.

      @davidm5707 Před 5 lety

      Why not? We've had "Hondays" since 2000 and they've been very reliable. They wouldn't give a 100,000 mile power train and 60,000 b to b warranty if they had to pay for a lot of repairs. And yes, they do support the warranty. Rick Case dealerships double it to 200,000 miles or 20 years.

      @dave_riots Před 5 lety

      @@davidm5707 I know Hyundai and KIA make reliable cars because I own a KIA, but I'm talking about this specific model. If it's the Hybrid model, I wouldn't see it as being reliable, due to the complexity in hybrid vehicles.
      Now, if it were the full-on electric model, it should last you as long, if not, longer than some reliable ICE cars.

    Not a fan of hybrid vehicles. They’re very complex and therefore very expensive to repair if something goes wrong.
    Go full petrol or full electric. Petrol are tried and true, while EVs are simpler. In fact, full electric vehicles are more reliable than petrol as of now.

      The drawbacks of full EV's are range anxiety, can't fuel up in a few minutes and your road trip is dictated by charge station availability and takes you from around 45 minutes to hours to charge up and or you better have a hybrid or petrol car as a second car.
      It's give and take on each one version.

    • @Jowurel
      @Jowurel Před 5 lety

      bubba lo
      All of those points are 100% true, however with electric vehicles you have the luxury of plugging in the car to charge at your home overnight, so every day you leave the house with 100% full charge.
      In my case, my job is only 4.25 miles away, so every weekday I travel only approximately 8.5 miles. I can plug in my car at home while eating dinner and it’ll be back to 100% before I go to bed. In that sense, not having to go to gasoline stations anymore is quite convenient.

    • @bubbalo3388
      @bubbalo3388 Před 5 lety

      Yeah, that's why I said give and take. For everyday use an electric makes sense and it'll be mainly how everyone uses the vehicle. But if you like road trips then you may need a second car that runs on petrol or both. And also if you forgot to charge the night before or your power goes out you may have a problem. But then again that's only if you live in an area where that is common. For me I have a gas guzzler because I need a large family hauler for road trips, I have a hybrid for when I don't need the gas guzzler and an EV is on my list next.

    Why make a car that skimps on even the basic comforts for the occupants? Sorry, but my arms, butt, and back are too important to me, so it's a shame that Hyundai cares more about the environment than it does it's potential customers. To put it in a word : injudicious.
