      This was my first thought, but the most fun i had with lightgun games was two player. With no discount for the 2-pack, we're looking at just about $210 USD. It's not "insane" for new tech, but it's still a bit out of my league.

      @@sunnohh Hi Sunnohh, I think I may have caused you some confusion, you can still use your 144hz monitor. The 60fps just gives an indicator of what the response time is for your shot which is in line with CRT Lightgun response times. The 144hz just means the screen updates quicker when the computer draws the results of the shot so you still benefit.

  • @sjarken3979

    Just to make it clear, the human eye can see alot more then 30fps. Its actually quite hard to measure that, as the brain response time can vary depending on training and focus. But, the human eye start to have problems with seeing any difference above 250-300fps.

      @RMCRetro  Před 5 lety +15

      Agreed, it would be interesting to know what it is but I expect there is quite a variance

    • @KuraIthys
      @KuraIthys Před 5 lety +39

      That's highly debateable, and really depends on context, what you're describing, and so on.
      To be perfectly accurate, the eye doesn't see in discrete frames at all, thus talking about the 'framerate' is technically meaningless.
      Parts of the brain process data at rates that equate to as little as 15 or even 6 fps.
      The lower bound for the distinction between something that looks like it's moving and something that's a series of still images is about 12 fps.
      30 fps is the point at which you can no longer identify individual black frames in a video sequence.
      Above that, it becomes a lot murkier, and you could argue for anything from 30 fps to 1000+ fps being an appropriate framerate.
      One of the problems here is not being clear on your definitions.
      Above 30 fps what stands out the most is the discontinuity of moving objects.
      An object moving across your field of view on the real world is doing a continous movement with no breaks in it. If it moves faster than your eye can take in information, the effect is that it blurs out over your vision.
      An image on a screen is a series of discrete steps. If it moves faster than the framerate of the monitor, but slower than your eye it will start to look like it's teleporting, rather than moving.
      If the framerate is higher, the jumps are smaller, thus it's less obvious that this is the case.
      Thus, how obvious this effect becomes is not a factor of just your eye or the screen's refresh rate, but also of how rapidly the object is moving.
      A slow-moving object likely won't be noticed even at 20 fps, while a very fast one could stand out like a sore thumb as 'wrong' even on a 120 hz display.
      Finally there is something that interactive media (games and the like) suffers from that is actually an independent phenomena that is frequently falsely equated with framerates.
      That is, latency.
      Often when people talk about a game feeling unresponsive, what they mean is the latency is high, NOT the framerate is low.
      Latency is the time taken from you providing some input, to the results showing up onscreen.
      Latency is affected by many factors, and is not directly tied to framerate.
      For some reference here, an 80's game console attached to a 60hz CRT television but running at a framerate of only 15 fps could have a latency as low as 66 ms.
      Meanwhile, a modern game on a current generation console, modern TV and modern game engine that runs at 60 fps could have a latency as high as 350 ms or more, which feels awful to play.
      So, 4 times the framerate, yet the low framerate game from the 80's is quite playable, while the modern game with much higher framerate feels totally awful and unresponsive...
      It really isn't as simple as saying the eye can see 'x fps', nor is fps really always what matters.
      Indeed, often fps is NOT what matters at all, and people are just naively using it as a poorly thought out proxy for what they actually want, low latency...

      @@KuraIthys If you play a game with 30 fps, and then play a game with 60 fps, you will clearly see the difference. Your right about latency tough, if that is high, its going to be seen as laggy no matter what. Btw, latency on CRT monitors does not seem as bad, because of the way the picture is drawn on the screen, while on lcd types all diodes light up at the same time, the crt draws the picture on line at the time. There has been alot of videos here on youtube on how much fps the brain can see, and your right, the eyes dont see in fps, but there is a limit to how many fps you can see the difference on. By seeing difference, i mean movement. A still picture at 30 fps or 60 fps dont matter, as you will have a hard time seeing a difference on that. I recommend watching those "how many fps can your eye see" videos. If we didnt see any difference from 30 to 60fps, we definitely wouldnt need 144mhz monitors would we? or 240mhz?

    The thing that's been confusing me, is why so few classic lightgun games have been ported to VR so far. Stuff like Time Crisis or House of the Dead is _begging_ for a VR version. It'd be the perfect combination of retro game design with modern tech. They could easily provide both ways of doing it, one where you're standing in front of a virtual arcade cabinet or large TV screen, and another where you're physically in the game in true VR. Maybe there's just not enough retro fans with a shared interest in VR just yet?

  • @iankphone
    @iankphone Před 5 lety +24

    While some PC CRTs went up to 75Hz (maybe more), TVs as you'd use with duck hunt and light guns topped out at 60 (NTSC) or 50(PAL) fields per second. It had nothing to do with refresh rate and everything to do with how CRTs worked and the binding of the light gun to the circuits driving the raster.

    • @fluffycritter
      @fluffycritter Před 5 lety +11

      Light gun games on the NES actually didn’t use the raster timing; they’d make the whole screen black and the flash the parts of the screen where the targets were and the zapper was just looking for the flash pattern corresponding to the target.
      Arcade light guns and light pens on home computers and so on did use the raster timing, though.

    • @PaulTheFox1988
      @PaulTheFox1988 Před 5 lety +1

      I think what they mean is the response time of CRTs vs LCD, even top quality LCD panels have response times of roughly 40+ms real response rate, whereas even an average CRT TV is less than 5ms real response rate, and that delay totally screwed up the timing of the game, which expected a response within about 10ms as measured from the time the white square flash frame appeared to the gun detecting it, not including human response times. (by real response rate I mean actual measured value, not the manufacturers specified grey to grey value)
      You're not wrong btw, but LCDs can work with light guns, sort of, however it is incredibly unreliable and even when it does work, the delay between pulling the trigger and seeing the results on screen are so far apart from each other that you can walk to London from Glasgow in that time xD

    • @lollandster
      @lollandster Před 5 lety +2

      @@fluffycritter That is correct. The light gun expects to see the white square within one frame (and for only one frame) of you pulling the trigger and that is very hard for a modern TV with >100ms input lag. Modern gaming monitors are fast enough that the zapper should work, but I have heard (not confirmed) that the sensor isn't able to see the LCD light (maybe some optical filters are used).

    • @oldvideopro
      @oldvideopro Před 5 lety +3

      On a CRT a single spot of light drew the image line by line, so some simple but fast timing allowed the gun to know where it was pointing. On a LED, OLED or LCD type of screen all the pixels are 'alight' all the time. The gun sees light wherever it points so the scanning reference simply is not there any more.

    • @lollandster
      @lollandster Před 5 lety

    17:05 60 fps too quick for the human eyes... Are you an Ubisoft developer? It's well established that 1) the Human eye doesn't work in frames per second 2) vision vary from people to people 3) Gamers are perfectly able to tell the difference between a 60+ Hz refresh rate and anything below

      Ever since purchasing an absolute monster rig of a pc i can personally say that i can notice anything lower than 144fps at 144hz
      that 24/60 fps number is absolute shit, like ruba mentioned it differs from person to person; younger people, military and gamers tend to be able to sense it more all the way up to 600fps in some cases.
      there is a study, look it up, don't just take my word for it.

      I feel like he knows there's a difference between 30, 60, and 120 gameswise. I think he was just speaking for the purposes of the gun in relation to response time and the eye.

    • @Crimsen13
      @Crimsen13 Před 5 lety +2

      If you were listening, what he stated was " after 30 frames a second its going fast enough to trick our eyes to thinking its moving. So 60 really should be fine."

    • @Rubafix989
      @Rubafix989 Před 5 lety

      @@Crimsen13 You can't just put your own interpretation into quotation marks and present it as "What he stated was". Plus your interpretation doesn't make any sense as the system is not about trying to trick the eye into seeing movement.
      In this context the camera capture rate will only affect the precision of the gun as it is the number of time per second the gun updates it's aiming position. At 60 fps, the camera captures an image every 16ms, which is then given to the on-board processing unit that will convert the image center (aim point) into a screen space coordinate in about 5ms. When you shoot, that position is sent to the game console which will then display the gunshot in the next frame.
      TLDR;
      - What he said about vision makes no sense and is either bad wording on his part or flat out misconception.
      - There is nothing slow about the human vision. What is slow is the decision process that can follow.
      - When aiming and shooting that gun you don't really activate that slow process and a sub 50ms response time could feel sluggish. But I'm not saying it is, and it's probably just fine as is.
      About Input Lag:
      The input lag of this system should be between 20ms and 50ms. The extreme scenarios for a 60fps game being:
      best: gun processing time + next game frame update = 5 + 16 ~= 21ms
      worst: old gun capture + gun processing time + current game frame processing + next game frame = 16 + 5 + 16 + 16 ~= 53ms
      It's by no mean scientific calculations, it just gives you an order of magnitude especially as, depending on the implementation, you could optimize some of those delays.

      Watching a movie isn't interactive.

      @DFX2KX Před 5 lety +1

      @@HalkerVeil "FPS Matters" is true, but mainly in a competitive sense. The more competitive, fast paced, and precise the skill floor of a game is, the more important a high-refresh rate and low-latency input become.
      The average human being stops noticing individual frames/flicker at around 30-ish FPS (30ms/frane), and reaction times above 1/2 a second are not uncommon. A Gamer who does not play twitch-reflex shooters as a rule (Flight simulator jockeys, for instance) might not go much beyond 60. I've used 144hz monitors, and honestly couldn't tell you the difference between 60 and 144. It's there, clearly. I can tell the difference between 30 and 60, but generally speaking 30 doesn't bother me as the shooters I play aren't CSGO levels of twitchy.
      That said, tech like this that gets the input lag down extremely low is great. I wouldn't waste money on a 144hz monitor because I'll never be at the level for that to matter, but the wiimote's sensor is definitely slow, slow enough that even I notice it.

    I know one of the major selling points is _avoiding_ mouse cursor emulation for a more point-and-shoot style, BUT having an option in the software to enable mouse emulation would, in theory, allow it to work with pretty much any PC game out there (or even to spice up your spreadsheets).

      Hi, it does operate as a mouse, it's just possible to hide the crosshair as you don't need to see it. So don't worry you can still spice up your spreadsheets in style. *Sinden Technology is not responsible for any bad accountancy due to spreadsheets being taught a lesson with a Lightgun* :-)

    I once read, and it may not be true. That ROB was only included to classify the nes as a toy, and not a computer.. which was better for tax reasons

      Didn’t they do this because the ban of game consoles at the time?? I totally forgot about this! :)

      I agree, I don't think it was "tax reasons", but several major retailers had made a top-level decision that the fad for game consoles was over, and they weren't interested in new ones. Part of Nintendo's pitch to the big toy companies was that it wasn't just a console, it was an entire "Entertainment System"
      (The version they took to CES even had a keyboard and a tape deck! Imagine how history would be different if they'd gone with that!)

    So those light guns can actually detect & recognize those rectangular shapes of objects from whether angle to process it in real time to register a hit but how reliable is it.
