It's finally here! The Sinden Light Gun - but does it deliver?
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 3. 03. 2021
- It's finally here in The Cave, the light gun that promises to end all of our problems. Light gun games are a special gaming genre. I've always been a huge fan of them, especially light gun arcade games like Time Crisis, Mad Dog McCree and Point Blank. Light gun signals from classic devices which require a CRT are not compatible with modern displays and solutions such as the Aimtrak Light Gun just haven't felt up to the job of delivering an arcade perfect light gun experience. In my Sinden Lightgun review today we find out it works as well as the prototype we first saw in 2019 on a range of arcade emulators including American Laserdiscs classic shooting games.

Question! What about using it on retro systems? they show 2 vids of it working on PSX/2 with a Pi mod. Are you going to set that up and how does it work? I want this with my PS2 so bad!
@@zombiekilldemon I understand some people have created an intermediary device with the Sinden and the Pi to make it work on old systems but it doesn't natively support it. On a PS2 the ideal would be a Gcon and a Sony wide-screen CRT. A nice 24"
@@RMCRetro yeah i understand. I really wanted it for my Backwards PS3 so i could play Time Crisis 2 straight off the disk in HD. I currently have the EMS Topgun 3 that works with it and functions like a wii mote but i cant find a second and wanted this for 2 player.
Cheers Neil , just want to take this opportunity again to say , really love your RMC channel mate, your a man after my own heart . keep up the good work , hope one day to visit the Cave in the future.
Just wanted to pop in and suggest you use a rear-projection screen and mount the projector from behind in mirrored/reversed display mode. That way anyone could walk in front or stand at any angle without blocking or interfering with the image itself.
As for the mister drivers, It's awesome to hear that the Sinden gun is likely going to end up with the level of support and community appreciation it deserves!
It's a mouse input you say? That could make for some interesting zoom meetings. "Why are you shooting at me with your toy gun?" In my head, "Bang! You're muted!"
I can just see the HR meetings. "I'm sorry you feel that way Mr. Jones, but "Eat Photons MuthaFuckah!!!" is not regarded as an acceptable way to end a meeting."
Jeffery Toobin! Say goodbye to your Toobin! *bang*
hahahahahaaaa
God, this makes me want to open up an arcade in my garage. Light gun games deserve a comeback.
As someone who has had to deal with the pain of aimtrak guns, Iâm stoked for these!
Just finished TC2 and 3 on one. Apart from having to stay still, what was the problem?
@@DrFelix125 I use mines with a projector, so setting up the sensor isn't the most convenient thing to do.
The pain of setting this up for teknoparrot games is real.
Such a long time to get everything configured...
Developer of Singe here - thanks for the mention!
Thanks for your hard work on such a great emulator!
Thanks Scott I've been having a lot of fun with Singe!
@@RMCRetro Wait till you see what is coming next!
Got my two non-recoil guns from the Kickstarter back in November, love them. Plus my kids (who have no interest in all of the rest of Dad's moldy old videogames from the 20th century) love using them.
Good to hear these positive reviews. They are pricey, but will be worth it if they do what they are supposed to.
have you been playing virtua cop? i loved that game so much
Thanks for clarifyig they were non-recoil - useful tidbit
@@gordons-alive4940 They don't.
i got me 2 recoil guns it is great
Trying to shoot the undertaker in Mad Dog McCree has the same energy as trying to shoot the dog in Duck Hunt
Did you know....you CAN shoot the dog in the VS Duck Hunt arcade I was playing there?
@@RMCRetro Is that the arcade version of duck hunt?
@@riggel8804 After 6 months I give you a answer, yes, arcade has this game :).
The first thing to came to mind when you mentioned the option for a machinegun mode on the recoil, was Terminator 2 the arcade game. Much like Operation Wolf it was not a light gun game in the proper sense, but instead used a pair of guns mounted to "joysticks". But the sound and feel of those guns while rattling away at T-800s and whatsnot instantly leapt to mind.
JUST GOT MINE TO MY SURPRISE! CAN'T WAIT TO SET IT UP
Congratulations! Let us know how it goes!
I've ordered one last year. Just waiting impatiently.
And i ordered mine 3 months ago...
Sounds like i might not be getting it for Christmas. :(
Amazing video mate! Just been playing a lot of light games again. Watched this with great interest and smiles on ma face đŽó §ó ąó łó Łó Žó żđđ
just ordered mine, hope i get it quick.good luck andy .your a legend
You are so damn right. Sometime my weekend will just be setting up the games/ emulator, getting automation ready, linking up the respective controllers, trouble shooting etc and not playing any games.
So happy to be an earlyish backer of this. So excited. Come on Sinden :)
I could imagine doing an interactive Powerpoint presentation with this thing.
Great video. Loved Mad Dog. Buying thism
That video thumbnail is utterly mesmerising.
I may have applied some Photoshop neural face filtering for "Anger". Are you scared?
@@RMCRetro you definitely need more thumbnails with CRAAAZZYY facial expressions!!
"Take care everyone.", he says as he shoots the viewer! đ Great video! Can't wait to get one of these!
In the vein of 'take care of him...' ;)
I used to play light gun games then I was shot in the knee
I loved it Neil! I just wanted to see more haha â€ïž
Pretty cool, I still have a few big CRT's that work well, when they eventually run out of parts this may be a good option. Fine work Sinden.
Such an excruciating wait but I'm so pleased to see this succeed. Looking forward to receiving my recoil units
Still waiting after ordered in October! My batch is due this week, did you get yours yet?
@@clobbyhardy yeah took about a year. They're a long way from plug and play but once set up they are very good.
love to see the final product working so well - hope my two Sinden Lightguns will be shipped soon as I am really looking forward to set them up on my arcade machine :)
The pushbacks on delivery are excruciating.
Looks really nice. There is no such thing as having too many settings to play with. Iâm glad to hear that there are good tuning tools available.
Looks great, looking forward to getting mine sometime in the next twelve years.
Lovely video, and lovely looking bit of kit!
Great review of what appears to be a fantastic product.
Amazing stuff! Need this asap for my man cave đđđ
thanks for showing some more awesome light gun games for my collection
Very good video, well explained and good quality. You earned yourself a like and a new subscriber, keep it up
Ok, Now Sinden make these plug and play for the New Switch House of the Dead game !!!
Nice! I just received my notification from the Royal Mail that my order has shipped yesterday.
I was SUPER worried about this video when I clicked on it. Waiting on mine that should get to me in the next month or so. SO happy it works as good as the last video & you're right I LOVE to tinker & will mostly keep it on the same monitor for a long time. The projector working is just icing on the cake really. Thank you for the video and in depth review.
Looks amazing, had a strong feeling it would be when I saw it back in 2019.
Looks perfect. Great reviewđ
I have 2 recoil ones on order. Very excited.
Liked and subscribed this is the first video i saw on the channel but is exactly what i wanted cheers.
Welcome to The Cave!
Thanks for this introduction. My last foray into lightguns was some custom built aimtraks - so interested to hear about these. A UK innovation too! Bonus.
great video. I've seen a couple videos about this gun but this one answers a lot of questions.
Thanks for watching it
This really shows off your new setup very well.
Damn! I gotta get one of these! Enjoyed the video, thanks!
Would love to have this at home.. Looks great.. Thanks for showing this Neil.
A nice review Neil, I personally don't use these things but for anyone else it looks pretty good. I noticed that you had an early start in the cave it must be quite cool to be in your new place and exciting times too. Thumbs up all round.
Neil, this may be the beer talking but, youre a god damn treasure
William, this may be the treasure talking, but youre a god damn beer
@@kai990 lol
You gotta get Area 51, and the sequel... Also, look up how to enter the "alien mode".
I have 2 of them coming, can't wait to try it on the Arcade !!!đ
Haha well done on the outro!
Pop!
this looks incredible!
Imagine living in 2021 and being an amputee gamer. You might have a missing leg, but now you get to 3d print Robocop leg, complete with pop-out gun holder and have a working light gun. Amazing.
NGL that would be soo badass
I would still rather have a second leg. Any amputee thinking that way has to be very desperate to find silver linings in their situation. Phantom limb pain can also be a problem. The chemist that discovered methoxetamine (the outlawed ketamine-like substance) was doing to in order to treat his own issues of feeling pain in a "limb" that was actually amputated. I can't even imagine a worse syndrome.
@@squirlmy... I'm not sure this comment warrented quite such a serious response... Interesting but a little bit out of place.
@@squirlmy well, many amputees online regularly enjoy discussing their prosthetic limbs, in a manner much as you might for a car or a bike. It sounds as if youâve mostly read medical information rather than observed how people tend to live with it? Absolutely, within the sub-community which already call themselves cyborgs, someone had thought about doing Robocop cosplay with theirs if not actually done one. Electronic prosthetic limbs are often a lot more compact than the ones theyâre replacing, so adding a shell that holds the Robocop stuff would not be hard at all.
Mark was pleasantly surprised by the weight and feel of Neil's barrel, as he gave it a firm squeeze.
Cheeky
@@RMCRetro It's mark Fixes Stuff's fault I swear. Every time I watch his videos, I'm compelled to make an innuendo. It's like Pavolv's dog, but with ZX Spectrums.
It's so satisfying to finally see a promised project living up to the claims.
It fell pretty short for me.
Absolutly not plug and play. Very difficult to setup. At least for me. Zero customer support. I recieved two recoil guns about 10 months ago and spent hours trying to get them to work. Never did. I decided to wait and see if the software was updated . I think it may be a bit easier now but I don't have the energy or time to see if things have changed for the better.
House of the dead was really awesome on the Saturn and arcade. So Iâd recommend that one.
Excellent video Neil! As always.
150⏠for the recoil version isn't actually so bad, what I thought... Maybe in the future, but not right now... Very nice, indeed!
Still waiting on mine but hopefully this month. I picked the exact same model and colour you did and I'm looking forward to playing all the lightgun games I could never afford to buy. Glad I lived long enough to see a second renaissance of lightgun gaming.
Simple yet amazing how the gun / software uses an outer border to determine the onscreen positioning - nice tech for sure.
looks like a winner! MiSTer compatibility is being looked into also. will be nice to have an alternative to CRT's for light guns! this seems like the closest its come.
Hopefully this means mine will be arriving very soon as I have two on order with the recoil. Thanks for the setup tips and looking forward to playing
I have a light gun for my C64, Master System, Mega Drive, Saturn, Ps1, Dreamcast, PS2 + those Guns for the Wii & PS3 so i'm sorted tbh but this would certainly be on my wish list if i did retro gaming through a PC.
I think the setup complications are necessary to actually cover almost every type of conceivable option out there. Well done to the development team. Excellent product.
I'm inclined to agree! It's nice to have that control
Thanks for the analysis! And nice Aphex Twin vinyl
Good stuff keep it up
I love it, I'm definitely gonna get 2 of em but.....I'm gonna wait.
I may end up waiting for the next revision of it. đŻ
Very cool!
Great gun and nice review. I agreed with Mark but taking a look at some old arcade machines they had the same design so better to play with a single hand, a skill to be developed in itself.
Man, I was so hyped to get one of these for so long. And then the Kickstarter happened, and I saw the price. lol
Worth every penny and not a fraction of what I spent on point blank, mad dog mccree and time crisis in the 90s.
@@hopkinsmiler I'm sure it is, I just don't have $600 for 2 guns lol. My max was $150CAD per gun. IIRC they were like $300CAD per gun on the Kickstarter
@@wardrich not watched fully yet but if it has recoil then probably reason for the price
@@TheStevenWhiting It does, and it sounds real good lol
I agree on both ends. Small company. R&d. But this is very niche. And well the amount of configuring in their app and mame/every emulator (teknoprrot) is just as much as dolphinbar, Wii mote, and a nice shell.
I just canât justify 600. When I have 2 awesome gun shells that have recoil for Wiimotes. At 300 for 2 guns. I would do it.
I just saw a bit of this video on Linus Tech Tips! And they credited seeing it here first with a description link... Nice work dude!
Cheers Pete!
Looks great on the projector.
Wish I still had mine.
This looks like a lot of fun!
Mad Dog McCree, the nostalgia. đ
love your show good stuff .
Looks fantastic, very impressed with it. I do own the G-Con45 and the G-Gon 2. The PS3 one, i cannot remember its name, but i own that too.
Massive light gun game fan so this is very interesting đ
I don't know about the UK, but the orange tips are required by law in the US. To be honest, it's a lot more likely that someone, especially a minor, with a fake gun would "accidentally" get shot here. It's happened before. This may be the one area the US has more restrictive "gun laws" than other countries. lol Actually, I suppose anyone can do what they want after purchasing, but no sales are allowed without it.
It's definitely in the rules here too. Toy guns have been sold with orange tips as long as I can remember - in fact I think now they even have to be entirely coloured some psychadelic colour so there's no possibility of mistaking one.
Great episode as always , would be interesting to see how it behaves with a Mister console or arcade.. Hmm?
Now I'll make a modular version, with a scope and rifle barrel and support for Silent Scope.
Do wonder how close to the Super Scope we can get before Nintendo sends lawyers...
Silent Scope was position based, I think. Not a true light gun. I don't think it would work with MAME.
@@digiowl9599 Nintendont lawyer's That's ilegal!! Reeeeeeeeeee!!
That would be hard I think, since Silent Scope's gun is not even a light gun IIRC. It's an analog gun with a tiny screen as a scope.
@@ZX3000GT1
Correct, silent scope is not a light gun.
But seeing as this emulates a mouse, which provides high accuracy X and Y floating point input, this 'light gun' is much closer to what Silent Scope needs today Duck Hunt
I backed the project when you first featured it and had mine a fair while ago it worked absolutely brilliantly with my home made bar top arcade ..unfortunately due to a serious loss of income due the horrid corona virus I had to sell both on Ebay ...it was the only Sinden gun on eBay at the time ..If any of you were the buyer I hope you enjoyed it.....seems like my income is gonna take another knock at the end of the month ..redundancies coming.. :( so I'll not be making another arcade system or getting anther Sinden gun any time soon :( ... c'est la vie.
Very much liking the sound of the recoil
Wish it could rock on the Pi! Canât wait! Now I can finally wait to buy one! Iâve been DYING for a proper light gun for modern tech! :)
Just put an order in for one with the recoil upgrade. Thanks for the review!
It looks great! I want to get it now
Thats great
What we see here is Operation Wolf heaven. Fantastic!
Gonna have to get this to add my the M.A.M.E. arcade I built for my kids... Light gun games are some of our favorites... We still pop in Gunblade N.Y./ L.A. Machine-gun on Wii, and the House of the Dead games once in a while...
Maddog!!! Ohh man right in the nostalgia lol
Just picked up a pair, and I cant wait to play Carnevil!
I love lightgun games but playing on mouse/controller just doesnt live up at all.
At first I was worried that the Recoil would just be like a controller rumble, but I'm glad to hear thats it heftier than that.
Just bought on your recommendation. I hesitated due to it being a crowd funded thing and crowd-funded hardware is extremely difficult to deliver, but if you say its good it will 100% be worth it I am sure :) đđ
I think it might be cool if there was an option where you can buy it and it comes with a console, with pre loaded configuration and all the classic gun games built in. I would probably definitely buy one then.
Unfortunately, due to copyright laws and the like, this is very unlikely to ever be done legally.
100 inch screen projector! Yes please. Can't wait!
This does definitely look like a decent product. Those set up issues will put off the casual gamer that wants to play Time Crisis on their Playstation though. Good job there are plenty of us that like to sit and tweak options all day though. Great video Neil.
I'm waiting on mine. Hopefully any day now. The first game I'll be playing is Time Crisis and then House of the Dead 2.
Loved the video thank you, I ordered my 2 guns with recoil 2nd October last year, Andys updates have been very good but I im starting to get worried that these won't turn up:(
i remember in 2001 i bought vampire night for PS2 w/Guncon. It played great on my huge Sony crt tv, but i was very disappointed later when it did not work with LCD type tvs. And i understand why it doesnt work. So maybe this will be a solution down the road. I miss playing until my trigger finger just doesnt work anymore. Lol
I remember my finger would cramp up and my arm was sore at the arcade when I was playing a long time, good times.
I want one also for my bartop, nice! been looking at it for a while.
Great video! I've just ended up buying one with recoil, so that's probably your fault.
I received my Sinden Lightgun today!!
Hurrah!
I got mine in Australia last year. I went straight to the Kickstarter after watching your last video with Andy. Andy should have looked after you, Linus Tech Tips had one last year.
A nice option for modern screens, although the point blank section looked a bit laggy - i have the original arcade with regular light guns and it looked like a slow response to me in your clip
Iâm genuinely scared of lag on this expensive toy.
FInally ordered one last night after watching this video, excited although I'm a emulation noob. Fingers crossed it won't be too difficult to re-play time crisis 1,2 & 3 once the light gun arrives. (I hear too there is now a TC 5!?! so super stoked to explore a new game too)
How did it go?
Looking to order one also.
Looks great. My only gripe is the white border, especially in a cab setup.
Imagine these things having analog sticks so you can play first and third person shooters and light gun games.
I still want a solid solution for the original consoles
Sinden does support PSX, PS2 and DC using raspberry as bridge device, with more supported systems coming. It's hard to set up, but anyone interested should be able to deal with it.
