This is good and honest, James. Glad I saw this. I always say, “The truth is interesting enough.” Keep up the great work.

Great video! I am a sound designer and audio engineer, so zi was thinking of making my own demo as I do check off half of that lost. However, you make a great point in that I DO NOT have years of voice coaching experience. I am not also fully confident in many writing styles. I am excited to do some VO training. Thanks again for the vid!

Thank you so much for watching! You could definitely make your own, and the audio would be great! I just wanted to let everyone know that it could be much better when you have a professional with years of experience directing you ya know?

@@JamesYounger Oh yeah! I'd really love to have a pro director guiding my reads.

Oh yes! It's definitely tedious, but oh so rewarding in the end! What db limit do you have this video's audio set at?

Hello James, this video sounds good and all and it mostly makes sense. I’m subscribed to your channel, I follow you and a lot of my equipment and software comes from your recommendations (what I’m able to afford obviously). My question is if you have a professional demo made (whenever the time is right), you put it up on your casting sites and/or send it out to projects you’re interested in and the client chooses to use you - (have you send a sample of their script back to them for evaluation) how do you reproduce their project with that high quality level that was shown in your professionally made demo so that they hire you? I would think they would be looking for that same level and quality of work in the resulting product that you present to them. How is anyone with a home studio setup (even a good home studio setup) going to be able to produce the professionals’ level and quality of work thereafter? Further clarification of what I’m saying. In this video with all the experience and high quality software and equipment that you possess you said your D.I.Y demo wasn’t good enough to send to clients. Since most of us don’t have the high level and quality of software, equipment and experience you have how are we ever going to make money or have a career doing VO if we can’t reproduce a high quality product like what our demo showed we could do? I have watched other VO videos and some of them say one should produce a D.I.Y demo to get themselves started (utilizing the best setup, equipment and software available to you at the time). This won’t get you the high paying jobs but it will get you smaller jobs that pay something and you can work your way up from there, get experience and maybe develop a client base and eventually pay for a professional demo. I’m an actor and singer. I’ve taken quite a few classes, workshops, etc. All the instructors say, when you think you’re ready to start auditioning start auditioning and see what happens, there is no “perfect” time to go out there and spread your wings. I feel the same way with producing my own D.I.Y. VO demo. I have taken group classes, I’m in a private class now, I have a VO coach, I’ve been practicing narration and commercial scripts, vocal warmup, breathing exercises and I have my own home studio utilizing most of the equipment and software that you’ve recommended. I’m having a hard time believing that I need to have a professional voice over demo made first in order to get started. Any thoughts on what I just said? Thanks.

Hey there Kerwin! Thanks so much for the comment. Would you mind if I made a follow up video to answer your questions? It's so much easier to explain things in a video rather than typing a book. Would that be okay with you?

If I may jump in. After a ton of research and consideration I produced my own demo but only to share with friends and family who might pass it along. After all, they'd likely do it via Whatsapp to people who'll in turn listen to it on their phones or using laptop speakers (no studio engineers like James up there lol)
One friend liked it and a couple weeks later I joined a project app with voa's, video editors, script writers, etc. Nothing spectacular but it helps pay the bills when nothing else is coming in.
Note: I have years of experience with music production and don't have said demo on my website or p2p's.

@@JamesYounger Sure, that would be great. I hope you understand I wasn't and I'm not trying to be a jerk or a "NAY SAYER" to put down everything you were saying or just to be mean. I've always been one of those people who 1- is fast learner (especially with things I'm passionate about) 2- does a lot of practice and homework on my own, 3- persistent, motivated and disciplined.
Like I said above I've had some classes, I have a private teacher and I've been doing a lot of practicing on my own and I just feel I can at least produce a D.I.Y. demo and get started. I'm looking forward to your follow up video.👍

@@jackedkerouac4414 I like the fact that you created your own demo and passed it along to friends to listen to. That's along the lines of what I'm talking about. I too have a few years of experience video/audio editing when I created a CZcams channel where me and a buddy teach Japanese. I did some vlogging and I added music to the videos as we were traveling around. Recently I've been trying to record some musical theater songs that I sing at auditions and events to add to my profiles on casting sites and SoundCloud so that others can hear me singing.

@@kerwinalexander6836 You're not completely new at this. At some point, as far as marketing - put yourself out there. Gotta think outside the box. You know that popular motivational credo of not waiting for the right moment but rather making your OWN moment? That's what I'm talking about.
I probably sent my "amateur" demo to 10 - 15 people. Mind you this is after months and months of p2p auditions with a decently treated room and professional equipment.
Now I can say I'm a working voice over artist and it didn't come from p2p. It was from direct marketing - knowing the right people and sending them my self-produced demo. If I waited to pay money to level up all the time, I'd still be broke.
