    When youbswitched from A to B I knew immediately you switched to the 416 ,:) I cannot explain the difference other than that the 416 had a much more detailed sound, I heard all frequencies very clearly, while the AT sounded quite a bit boomier and muddier. Also, In some of the scenes it had some strange glassy or metallic reverbarencr. It could have been the room, but it was a bit off. So the 416 is clearly better. But the AT could be a good choice for many.

    There is something i dislike a lot in the sound of the SM7b, even if i understand the success or the good things of it, but i find like the mids in the SM7b are somehow grainy and over compressed, to me it has something unnatural in its sound. The RE20 dynamically sounds better but has some harshness in the S that i also don’t like. But probably i would pick the RE20 over the SM7b. But for a micro for fast and best results out of the box, the SM7b. Thanks for the video ❤

    Okay so follow up on this discussion. Appreciate you making a video like this. Let’s say you are forced to record in a poorly treated environment. Would the trade off of losing clarity be worth it to help remove some reflections? Of course treating the space is the best option, but let’s say you are forced to record in an untreated space. Those are the trade offs I’m trying to weigh. Not for voice acting, for “creator” purposes (podcast, talking head, vo for video)

    • @Levi_Allen
      @Levi_Allen Před 4 dny

      To clarify, I know you said something along the lines of “if you are a CZcamsr / creator go for it” but I couldn’t tell if you felt one method would have an advantage or not. Again, purely outside the profession of voice acting.

    • @JamesYounger
      @JamesYounger Před 2 dny

      @@Levi_Allen Hey Levi! If you're a content creator it would be totally fine to use one of these if you couldn't afford to treat your space. You'd just need to understand post processing to really bring the audio back to life. Mainly EQ. The problem then lies in the fact that every voice is different, and every mic is different, and every mic will sound different on every voice because, like I said, every voice is different. So unfortunately you'd have to understand EQ to make the most informed adjustment to your audio. You don't want to arbitrarily bring up the highs within the EQ, because you might end up enhancing harsh frequencies that could make your audio hard to listen to. Long story short, play with your audio and using the EQ. Learn as much as you can about it until you're happy with how it sounds.

    Even in the music world you don't want to sound like you're in a cardboard box with all that 300hz building up. Vocal booths were actually created to separate the vocalist from the band in live studio sessions. It does its job well in that area but it's not ideal to record in small spaces acoustically speaking.

    • @JamesYounger
      @JamesYounger Před 14 dny

      Yes, definitely. I say this to everyone, however it's not impossible to make a booth sound professional. That 300hz build up can be attenuated with sufficient acoustic treatment, it's just that most people don't want to go to the trouble it takes to treat a small space like this. It takes a really good understanding of acoustics to get a space like this under control AND it will cost you a decent amount extra on top of the outrageous money you paid for the booth in the first place. Usually just not worth it, and the closet or room you have at home can be treated and made to work just fine.

    • @sinsoftherich
      @sinsoftherich Před 13 dny

      @@JamesYounger I'll be honest I fell for the acoustic foam from amazon on all the walls thing. I just got into music and I needed a space to record vocals and that was my first thought (I obviously have no acoustic science knowledge). Now that I know that this foam is pretty much useless would it be advisable to just remove it all and get thicker foam and then treat the space with diffusers and bass traps or is there more to the story with this. I really need help lol

    • @JamesYounger
      @JamesYounger Před 12 dny

      @@sinsoftherich So, the best thing you could do is place acoustic panels inside the booth. I get my panels from GIK acoustics, however this is pretty challenging to do if the booth is too small and they usually are. The next best thing is to do what I did back when I had my booth. Cover the ENTIRE booth with 4" pyramid foam from "The Foam Factory" AKA foam by mail, and here's the real kicker, I made custom bass traps for the corners. If I were you, I'd try covering the entire booth in 4" foam first and see what kinda results that gives you. I might be just enough to not need to do what I did with the custom bass traps.

    • @sinsoftherich
      @sinsoftherich Před 12 dny

    • @JamesYounger
      @JamesYounger Před měsícem

      CZcams's loudness standard they would like you to meet is -14 LUFS, but meeting this for CZcams this isn't as crucial as it is for VO because CZcams will just turn your video up or down depending on where your measure your audio to.

    @GadesChannel Před měsícem

    Are you sure about that? Normalization to -3dB of peak level? This provides differences in levels and this listener never gets equal level of files! It should be -23LUFS, this is the global broadcast standard and measures loudness, not only peak level. BTW. in your example - rotate phase about 20 degrees allows you to increase loudness level about 2-3dB because whole waveform shifts to the center and peaks move down.

    • @JamesYounger
      @JamesYounger Před měsícem

      In the world of voice over the industry standard is normalizing your audio to -3dB. In every other industry it can be different. Music is usually measured by LUFS. Audiobooks are the only exception in the voice over industry and they use RMS. As a voice actor, you're not trying to increase your loudness unless you want to deliberately screw yourself out of the job and piss off the engineer you're sending your audio off to. As I said in the video, I leave my opinions at the door and solely speak to the industry standard. Everything starts getting murky real quick when everyone tries to make their opinion a standard. The industry standard is there to keep people from using other methods that will inevitably just screw yourself out of a job anyway.

      @@JamesYounger The issue I'm having is I work with a lot of authors or people that aren't used to work like this - voiceover work in general, content creation, or working with any of this equipment. And because it's sometimes done remotely and not inside studios it can make it hard to determine what is happening in the setup to cause issues. I was thinking of maybe suggesting the MV7 as an option for those that aren't used to this but have received pushback for it being a dynamic microphone and not a condenser. However, we're working with people that do not know sometimes even basics about audio work because that's not their job, but I have to still produce an audiobook all the same.

      @@wombataudio That's gotta be incredibly frustrating. I personally don't think that voice actors SHOULD have to learn all of this technical stuff, but unfortunately they MUST because of the way the industry has shifted. And even though I don't think they SHOULD have to learn all the technical stuff, at the same time, I personally would have learned as much as I could on the technical side as a voice actor because it can only help to know about your equipment and all the other technical stuff. I just know most voice actors couldn't give 1 hoot about that stuff.

      @@JamesYounger It is incredibly hard to convince authors working remotely that need to record their own voices, and especially if they live in rural areas, to learn and to get on top of this. Especially when they're older as well and don't have a basis to work off of (the amount of times I've had to talk to relatives of authors to help with aspects of troubleshooting). I'm just wondering if using a dynamic mic like my suggestion with the MV7 would work for a smaller publishing house looking to put these books out. These authors aren't professional voice actors and will likely only ever do this for the 1-3 books they might be asked to record.

      @@wombataudio Unfortunately I have no idea if that would work for them or not. Personally, I don't see it as an issue (using the MV7) but there's no way for me to know if the publishing house will go for it or not. Each will probably have their own varying response 😕

    i only looked this up because i just made a song on bandlab without a mic cover and noticed my vocals sound more “captured” and “fuller” and i usually record my music with a neumann and kaotica but I wasn’t really satisfied with my raw vocal until I realized the kaotica eyeball was the problem this whole time

I don´t own a SM7B, just a "brand new" SM58 connected to a Roadcaster DUO. Im so happy with the sound quality! Im trying to learn how to EQ and is super fun. Perhaps never learn a thing but the good time is guarantee. Thank you!

    It's always a good day when the audio doctor uploads another mic review! I would personally shorten the intro to make 10-15 seconds! Great B-roll though!!
