African Giant Millipede Archispirostreptus

- Gone are the days of ten dollar African Giant Black millipedes, known as AGB's. Archispirostreptus gigas was not just the largest millipede in the hobby, it is the largest in the world. And there was never a millipede more suited to being a pet or pet-worthy. They were gentle giants and veteran hobbyists miss the days of seeing them regularly available in pet stores and at reptile shows. But the little mites you see in the second clip of this video were found to be disruptive to agriculture here in the United States and so the species was banned from import. We remember those days fondly. This species was never a big reproducer in our tanks but some captive bred specimens still circulate in the US hobby in very low numbers. I myself reproduced them twice. The video tells more. Thank you for watching and know that I appreciate your comments and questions about any "bugs" topic!
The Bumblebee millipede was like "Nice butt you got there."
Eew
🤣🤣
If that giant African millipede he is holding was a girl, the bumblebee millipede would be such a pervert 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.
I remember going to petco as a kid and seeing one for $12 and saying to myself when i get older ill finally have one, but sadly that dream never came true and may not for awhile😢.
Those were the days my friends. I thought they'd never end. You know the song! ;) Those were the days, oh yes those were the days!
Bugs In Cyberspace Nice, dude.
I caught 4 and accidentally stepped on one
@@milkcoe2383 bruh!
You can actually still buy them in europe, just bought one today (the reason for watching this video)
20 of them were sold at the Portland Reptile Show last weekend. They are still around here in the US hobby too but not mainstream like they used to be. Thanks for representing the hobby there and mentioning them for others in your area, Daniel!
Bugs In Cyberspace You seem to be the right person to ask where to get males, since breeding them was my plan from the beginning on.
P.s. Mine has the mite
@@industrialcamo I don't know where you might source them on your continent exactly but you might ask Martin over at BugzUK.com. I always recommend him when people outside the USA are looking for a source.
@@bugsincyberspace Hi. Do you know who the seller was in OR?
@@jillt5732 Sorry, no idea. I only heard about it second hand.
Now that's a real good pet
The neighbors never complain of barking or steaming piles of poop in their lawn! ;)
looks kind of terrifying and cute at the same time. I keep seeing tiny millipedes in my house, didn't know there were ones this big wow
I LOVED these as a child - always rescuing them!
The bumble bee one is giant compared to the ones where I live, let alone the African one.
For many years I thought the same things since I wouldn't only see small Julida millipedes in my urban yard, but then I came to realize that I only had to drive about ten minutes to a wilder area to find larger millipedes.
Just unbelievably beautiful! Gwyn got to hold 4 at a time at a reptile show. $600 worth of bugs on one hand!
Isn't there a saying that goes something like "Millipedes are a girl's best friend?" ;)
It’s a cliche for a reason.
I found many medium black ones invading around my house and now invaded my heart. They are so cute.
lol, that thought developed very nicely!
@@bugsincyberspace haha! Yeah. This season got very moist and these friendly fellow started to appear this year.
I'm in England and I've wanted a giant African ever since I held one at my yearly school fair during my work experience. At first I was gonna get a hamster but these millipedes just seem way more docile, mellow and quiet, which I think will connect with me as a person more since I have those traits also. Not to mention being cheaper, less messy and not getten bitten by sharp teeth 😅. Ive found a website that is selling them for £20, just gotta get what I need, read up some more about them and reasure my mum because she hates anything with alot of legs lol. I'll try my best to change her mind and see this animal for its beauty
lol, my advice to children living with their parents is always to get your room cleaned up and do the chores on the list, and then hand your parents a good report card...and at THAT time, ask them for pretty much anything you want and the answer will be YES! ;)
@@bugsincyberspace Thats so funny, I've said I'll do exactly that 😅 Atm we're just waiting for a situation to pass by and obviously during the virus, waiting for the right time when money won't be too scarce
I saw African Giant Millipedes when I was on holiday in Kenya we were cycling on a path through a wooded area kept noticing them always seemed to be two at a time. Impossible to miss because they're big when I got off the bike to have a close up view one was a matte black and the other was a gloss black both had red legs. A security guard at the hotel said that the glossy was a male and the matte was a female.
I highly recommend visiting Kenya if you like wildlife, mammals to insects there's a lot to see.
Woah got vibes from "nothing will ever replace them....from our pet tanks."
the Bumblebee Millipede has the single most fun and whimsical name to say of any cutsie crawly.
I’ve got chills watching this.
They are such beautiful creatures. Happy to see a video on them since I just purchased a pair and am just waiting on warmer temps to get them 🥰
Where did you find them???
@@sheepherder5009 probably not America
@@sheepherder5009South Africa and I think other parts in Africa
I'm very disappointed that they were banned, I hope that in the future people will make more captive bread specimens so that these can be available again. Do you know what the largest millipede that you can keep now is? I like the bigger millipedes
Mardonius come and go in the US hobby. Rarely, giant glossy black pinklegs. Orthoporus is about as big you as you can consistently get.
I have a giant millipede and a few bumblebee millipedes coming in the post Friday cant wait.
It's like Christmas every time!
its so scary but it cant hurt people
The bumblebees millerpede looks so cool😊😊😊😊😊
Definitely one of the prettiest millipedes that is commonly kept as a pet. Thanks Crystal!
It’s cute!
Thank you for sharing. I always thought they were very cute and would love to have pet millipedes someday.
Thanks for commenting, Jinel!
It’s so big and adorable ☺️
I came across a giant African millipede at a reptile shop around ‘99-‘00. They had no idea what it was and offered to sell it to me for $15. She was around 13” long, and lived for 2 years - died suddenly right in front of me. She was my favorite pet. I’m sad to hear their import has been banned as I’d love to have another.
Great contrast between 2 great millipede species!
Thank you, Rus!
That's a thicc boi
So cute 😁
You can see his hand shaking as he's holding that monster.
I’ve always wanted one but since there band I bought giant gold millipedes (:
I wonder why? A cultural issue? If so I blame some care takers.
@@EnchantedSmellyWolf The mites were thought to affect crops, so they were banned from import (as were all foreign 'pedes). At least that time it had nothing to do with improper care.
You can still find captive bred specimens, they're just not as readily available as they used to be.
These big African Gaint Millipedes are pretty common in the wild close to my home here in the Waterberge. They tend to come out during summer time just after it rained. The biggest one I picked up was a 9.5 incher. One of my favorite Millipedes is what we know as the Zebra Millipede.
im just back from a break in watamu , coastal eastern kenya. the reason i found this video as these things where crawling everywhere in that area. even coming into our room at night. literally in the hundreds.. was amazing to see and they they inspired me to look them up and learn more..
I think you may be the first person I've ever talked to who personally saw them in their native habitat. What a wonderful picture you paint in my mind. Thanks Michael! What were you doing there in general, if you don't mind me asking?
Cool video, Peter!!!
Thanks Mary!
I got porcellio scaber from you they've grown, I'm starting to see lots of young ones. I also have dwarf white isopods, Florida Ivory Millipedes and Orthoporus Ornatus Gold Millipedes, all are doing well with the weather here in Phoenix, although I haven't seen any baby millipedes yet there might be some, but are probably staying burrowed for now. They are all in 16.25 quart clear plastic storage boxes (wanted to give them enough space to explore). I hope to get some Giant Canyon Isopods from you in the coming weeks. Thank you for such high quality and healthy critters.
I really appreciate your orders and follow up post here with updates, Station! Thanks a bunch and please let me know if you have any questions along the way. Check out the contest post I put up on Friday (and every Friday) and get in on the action/fun!
so you can sell them if they are captive bred in the us? Would you consider breeding and selling them?
They are unfortunately very, very difficult to breed or they would be available in huge numbers.
@@bugsincyberspace How much would these cool lil guys go for in the US?
@@commanderwaddles3483 As they are unavailable they are essentially priceless. ;)
@@bugsincyberspace thats a damn shame. I live in Austria and just bought one for 16,99€ from germany. I guess i can consider myself very lucky.

I'm getting one soon! They look so cool
I really like the giant african millipede and the rosehair tarantulas. I don't know why we aren't importing them to the states but I really like these animals.
Net bug sells captive bred adults for 120
Fletcher Steinberg 120 dollar? That’s pricey but I guess they are pretty cool and exotic
I saw babies for sale at a reptile expo last year, I really regret not getting one because I've been looking for somewhere to get one or two since like a week after that expo
How much were those babies going for?
@@bugsincyberspace $20 if I remember correctly? They were pretty small. I'm not 100% sure they were gigas, they were only labeled as "giant african millipedes" or something similar. They sold out quickly though, I visited the table twice- second time there was only one left!
@@PuppyMintMocha Man, that's a sweeeet price! People often confuse Mardonius as these though. Still $20 is a great price for them, IMO.
That's a dream species of mine! The Archispirostreptus gigas I mean, not the Anadenobolus. I have a breeding population of those😁. Beautiful myriapod, I wish I was alive during the time they were easy to source!
Those were good days! The Wild Wild West of the World Wide Web!
Hi can you please tell me what type of mesh container you suggest for the small orb weaver?
I've had them set up in the 12X12X12 cube before. The 17X17X17 is probably better. Basically, the bigger the better.
America. Where you're free to own a lion, or a tiger, or a chimp, but not a giant snail or a millipede.
Then again, I don't think "Millipede King" has the same ring 😜
lol, and it has a better ring if you ask me!
@@bugsincyberspace OK, but we gotta make it sellable to Netflix. So let's try this...

@@bugsincyberspace LOL
Are these two species able to live together? I'm in the UK - They aren't banned here :D
Yes, their care requirements are similar. About the only concern would be that the giant crawls over a molting specimen of a smaller species (or even a younger individual of the same species).
Africa insects and animals next level
Wow, what a cool millipede! They look very similar to narceus americanus.
Sure, in the same way a garter snake looks like an Anaconda. ;)

Im scared with a normal house sized millipede but this, damn is millipede safe to touch? what i know is they are stinky as hell
Most millipedes are safe to touch with only a few exceptions. The secrete distasteful compounds and so you'd not want to eat one. That could make you sick.
Wow!
Why are those so darn cute, I wish I had one

and i got freaked out by a millipede the size of my thumb... but to be fair it was in the middle of the night and it was crawling on me.
Is this your personal specimen?
It was never mine. I had a customer in this case before I purchased and resold it. ;)
Bugs In Cyberspace :O :,(
I have noticed wood mites in my bumblebee millies tank. Is this something i should be concerned with and if so, do u have any tips on getting rid of them?
I wouldn't worry about them at all, personally but many people don't even like the word mite. ;) They won't bother your millipede, although if they turned out to be some kind of mite that proliferates in the cage in explosive numbers, you might want to pull your millipedes out for a day and freeze treat the substrate.
@@bugsincyberspace thanks so much! I knew that some mites could wreak havoc on a tank while others were harmless but I dont know the differences
@@Tara-sf7uu Unless you are importing wild caught stock from other countries, mites are likely to be a mere eyesore to the human looking at the tank than a danger to the animals. When people remove them, they often think they are doing it for the health of their pets but generally it is because it makes THEM, the person, feel a bit "itchy," psychologically. ;)
Ahh, I see. I had my first experience with mites in a fruit fly culture a few years back and ever since I have been leary. Took forever to get rid of, and the little boogers where everywhere, lol.
@@Tara-sf7uu I've heard some horror stories over the years with mite problems that began in fruit fly cultures. I see mites every now and then in tanks of various things, but outbreaks are extremely rare. I think it helps that I keep all of my containers on wire racks rather than solid shelves. Mites find them a bit more difficult to navigate and with no moist places to hide beneath/between containers.
there are some really cool flat backs in oregon
True! I'll got two of them going up on the site later this week!
You say you bread it in the US meaning they are legal to sell? If so Im extremely interested. Shoot me a message anytime if you could help point me in the direction of purchasing one of these awesome Millipede's!
I don't know anybody who is currently breeding them, sorry. They were much more common in the hobby in the 90 and 00's.
They're super common in the wild in Tanzania/Kenya. Used to pick them up when I was there.
HOW I COULD NEVER WTF
As a kid I used to play with this animal in Africa
I had a friend from Cameroon when I was a kid. I used to love his stories about all the bugs in that country! In any case it sounds like you and I had similar childhoods in some ways.

Do you have them on your store

Where can I get the African giant millipede
Is that an ivory millipede? I have two. I wish I could get an African giant millipede.
The black and yellow one is a bumblebee millipede. Ivories get quite a bit bigger than that although nowhere close to the size of the AGB!

@@simarillion666 I appreciate your question! Young bumblebees and ivories do look a lot alike.
I live in Oregon, and am curious since I live in state if you'd be willing out a negotiation, I raised two from l3 a few years back and miss them more than anything.
Hi Jake! It's been a few years since I had these, if that answers your question. Thank you for your interest!
@@bugsincyberspace totally understand, I used to live in UT, but now live in OR, which makes ordering substrate from you much easier. If you know anyone in the area with A. Gigas I am always on the lookout, I know the Oregon Zoo raises tons of these giants :)
@@jakebushman9435 Substrate comes with free shipping and so it doesn't matter too much where you live. My friend who works at the zoo says they bred them a while back but that they presently only have about three of them since the bug zoo doesn't get the staffing it once did before the person that was caring for them left.
Btw where you get?
Just a contact I've known for a while who was lucky enough to have one. I only got it because it all sort of worked out for a customer and my source to put something together for the two of them.

Since they were banned from import now many years ago, they have been more and more difficult to source here in the US. Presently I don't know anywhere, sorry.
Man... that sucks. Do you know of any obtainable species that are of a similar length?
@@volking6338 I went to a reptile show in Southern California recently and saw at least 3 or 4 tables that had them for sale. I know LLLReptile( the 4 store chain down near Sandiego) had several for sale at their booth. If you contact them you may be able to snag one.
I mean the African Giants
Getting buffalo bill vibes
Is there a way to tell how old they are ?
would love to have a couple.
how come you stopped breeding these?
The AGB's were always very difficult to breed. I only produced eggs of them on two occasions, ever! Considering the numbers of them that were imported by the thousands and thousands (they used to be in chain pet stores around the country) along with their popularity, it's a very good reflection of how difficult they were to reproduce.
