  • Setting up the Giant African Millipede Enclosure - A Guide
    Gar @ ArachnoTube / @arachnotube
    Possibly the worlds largest millipede species! These gentle giants make excellent pets are an ideal first invert and have an expected lifespan of about 7-10 years. Millipedes do not actually have a thousand legs, they usually have between 100-400 (2 sets of legs per body segment). With each molt they add more segments and with new legs.
    The housing can be any suitable small aquarium or container that can take a 15 cm depth of leaf mould (either beech or oak) substrate, mixed into this should be a quantity of soft deadwood (approximate. 10%). The substrate should be kept damp but not wet; pieces of bark placed on the surface of the leaf mould act as mulch and help prevent the substrate from drying out too quickly. Most species are easy to keep and breed.
    The BIG SECRET of keeping and breeding millipedes is………DON’T DISTURB THEM. Now this means that if they vanish out of sight for a few days which is what they tend to do, don’t dig them up to check on them. Millipedes are naturally subterranean and so spend some time out of sight. Also, some species build soil chambers both to lay eggs and to moult their skins and each time you dig them up you destroy the chambers and so prevent breeding and prevent moulting which can be very harmful as some species require some weeks to rest in the chamber both before the moult and after as the new skin hardens.
    Millipedes feed on soft fruits and vegetables and show a great fondness for cucumber it’s always best to offer a mixture of foods, dusted with extra calcium; this simply means scraping some cuttlefish over your food stuffs. Also, remove the food before it moulds usually the next day but do leave it in through at least one night.

    I released my baby african giant train millipede into my communal enclosure 22 days ago and haven't seen him since. Is this something I should be worried about? Habistat sits round 24.5c - 25.4c air temp. I maintain the soil damp, has wood, spagnum moss, leaf litter. I supplement greenarys and dog food, two cuttlefish bones. The rug consists of Darkling beetles, springtails, diary cow x giant orange isopods and architina reticulata-Giant african land snail. The rug is pretty big its approximately 2ft long 1ft wide 2ft tall, about the size of a baby leopard Gecko viv. If anyone can let me know if I'm being paranoid or if I should go looking, that would be great. Thanks in advance!

      He is probably hiding in the substrate. These creatures are most active at night, too.
      The conditions you have are okay, so unless he was sick or got wounded, he should be somewhere in there eating away:)

      I think it's fine like the person before me said, but the other critters MIGHT, disturb or shy away the millipede. But he'll probably get used to it.
      Check in the night once or twice a day to see if he comes out of his hideyhole.

    How many can you have in that enclosure, and can you mix different species of millipedes in one enclosure?

    • @thebotanist7145
      @thebotanist7145 Před 3 lety

      You shouldn't keep two species in one enclosure, they might get territorial.
      The less the better, since you need a bigger enclosure for more then one millipede. In the enclosure in the Video you could keep 2 small-medium sized millipedes.

    • @jendubay3782
      @jendubay3782 Před 3 lety +4

      Just 1 Giant African Millipede. If that. I would keep scarletts Millipedes or bumblebee millipedes in that.
      The soil depth should be as deep as your longest millipede so if you have a 12-inch long millipede the soil should be 12 in deep.
      The longest millipede so 24in long and 12in wide.
      In a container that small with that many millipedes you're going to have to change the substrate all the time which can interfere with their molting

    • @nessamillikan6247
      @nessamillikan6247 Před 2 lety

      Exactly. That enclosure is way too small for AGB. I keep Giant Deserts (O. Ornatus) in an enclosure twice that size, and I still feel like I’m not giving them enough room sometimes.
