    Kat.. as a longtime Centipede keeper my best guess would be overfeeding.. you need to know that Centipedes have a very simple & slow digestive system.. they can go a long time without food and being totally fine.. but as soon as you overfeed them their lifespan is dramatically shortened.. and this goes for absolutely every centipede, doesn't matter which one.. i had to learn it the hard way over the years as well.. best of luck to you with the new one

    I keep Scolopendra subspinapes (Vietmanese Giant Centipede) and I can tell you that your pedes are way too dry. I almost guarantee that the one was dying because of it. They cannot be allowed to dry out like that and there was no drinkable water in it's enclosure. I keep my pede so there is humidity built up on the sides of the enclosure as well. I hope you have had better luck with centipedes over the last year and in years to come. They really are delightful and super exciting to keep. I want to get a few more for sure. I think they are so cool and prehistoric looking. .

    Honestly, putting your pup away for centipede time is a good move😂 When I was little, I sat on a giant blue Hawaiian centipede. Finding centipedes in your home in Hawaii is WILD. I remember it hurt! Better run from my flip flops! Also, I watched a video about the simply spiders tea, and saw your comment. So disappointing for this hobby!

    • @annesmith708
      @annesmith708 Před rokem +2

      I had forgotten all about them until I read your comment. I was visiting Kauai and found this rather large blue-black centipede moving across the carpet in my condo. It didn't occur to me that it could be venomous. I used a water glass as a catch cup and took it outside. Memory exaggerates but I would say it was about 6 inches long and about the diameter of a size 6/7 ring finger. The glass catch cup was not too big for it. Do the feral pigs and chickens eat these guys? Do the toads eat them?

    • @rebel4466
      @rebel4466 Před rokem

      @@annesmith708 There are mainly two different centipedes in Hawaii. Scolopendra subspinipes and Otostigmus scaber. The Scolopendra having the more potent venom and I would advise to handle with caution. It's nowhere near deadly or anything, but a bite is known to hurt quite a bit.
      The 6 inches would be easily possible for a Scolopendra subspinipes, so you might remember correctly.
      Chickens will happily eat centipedes, toads will most likely eat them, if they're not food sized for the centipede. A bit more of an even match up. Not sure about feral pigs, but most likely yes.

    • @sandpiperr
      @sandpiperr Před 7 měsíci +1

      Same!
      I figured out that what scares me about bugs is long legs. That's why I'm scared of spiders, but even more so centipedes...especially house centipedes eventhough I know those are some of the non-venomous ones.
      With spiders, I like Kat's videos because I get to learn about spiders and watch them with it being absolutely impossible for them to get on me. So a video is perfect.
      The centipedes, though, I can't even watch without getting chills. The long, undulating legs just do me in!
      Which is why I don't mind milipedes so much and have no fear of snakes (other than a healthy respect for venomous ones, of course!).

  • @sethcothran470

    I think that your centipede is acting weird because it is molting. Its posture makes me think it's molting, so maybe just leave it alone for a day or two and see what happens. Best of wishes!

    • @nicks1063
      @nicks1063 Před rokem +8

      That's what I was thinking initially, they tend to get a bit sluggish right before they molt. I would also suggest just leaving it alone for a while, being about to molt would also explain it being on the surface (cause you can't exactly crawl out of your old exoskeleton in a burrow).

    • @LxstAgain
      @LxstAgain Před rokem +2

      it’s not molting unfortunately, it doesn’t have any of the pre-molt signs. even while in premolt they don’t act like that. it looks to be slowly passing away, probably due to old age since these are usually wild caught as adults so you never really know their age.

  • @red_five1542
    @red_five1542 Před rokem +1

    Kat. You need the rehouse this one right away. Your substrate appears to be soaking wet and flooded. That is why he will not burrow. This tropical species needs DRY soil that it can breath under when burrowed. Warm (80F) air temps and high humidity like 90%. The humidity must be achieved by misting and evaporation, not by wet soil. Your centipede appears to be soaking up to much water through his breathing holes which are on the sides of his body sections (like a roach). He will burrow instinctively but if the soil is wet, he can DROWN in it! Give him dry, loose substrate. You can put a heat strip under enclosure to compensate for low room temperature if needed. Recommend use of thermometer and hydrometer inside enclosure for this guy. Good luck!

    You have to hydrate them quite a bit they can die very easily by dehydration. That’s the rough part about keeping them especially with the fungus it’s unfortunately a catch 22 with them. I do know from my experience once they become adults there are certain species that simply don’t live very long. Tropical ones and desert ones are supposed to go longer with about 5-6 years but the local ones I’ve kept generally only go a year or two if your lucky because they’re from New England and usually die around November and December naturally. The house varieties can go from what I believe is the longest at a 7 years. It seems short to us but among arthropods centipedes live fairly longer lives than most so though it seems short if you’ve had them a couple years that’s fairly long to them. I saw overfeeding could’ve been an issue and that also depends on where you get them from in the wild. Tropicals eat the most as they are almost constantly surrounded by food, desert ones you should stretch out feeding to how often one would find food in that environment. The local New England ones I had needed to be fed once and even some said twice a day because they starve quickly. I would try and find out what each ones native countries are and try to adjust temps and feeding to match that surrounding and keep at least one area more moist. If it’s constantly staying in the moist zone that could very well indicate there’s not enough.

Iv got a scolopendra subspinipes (Red flame), Iv got a s.dehaani (Cherry red), an s.dehaani (Thai yellow leg) juvenile, an s.dehaani (Thai red leg) juvenile - I couldn't imagine life without them now. If you get them as juvenile pedelings & grow them up to adulthood you will be surprised how much more time they will start spending above ground. I love all my T's but I have to say the centipedes really have a special place in my heart now. I expect that sick one has probably passed on by now but I wish you luck with the other 2.

    one thing i would suggest is always know where your centipede's natural environment is and replicate that. some pedes don't do well with tons of humidity, but the Tropicals need like 80%, and at minimum 75 F. moss is always a really big help as you can wet it and mix it into the substrate which will keep the humidity up with out soaking the soil.

      I don’t but I’ve been paranoid about that. It honestly seemed a little dry .. I think it just got old /:

    my buddy has one. to re-house he slowly located it. then used a piece of glass to block off the rest of the enclosure. removed all the dirt from the other side. removed the glass. slowly spread out the dirt and located it again. he did this twice, then he put a plastic bin inside that had dirt in it with a big hole cut into one side. he used a brush to herd the centipede to the bin and it retreated into it hiding in the dirt. then my buddy placed the same sized plastic bin over the top of the other one which sealed the critter inside. he then transferred the bin. he put 2 crickets in the enclosure and watched the centipede leave the bin, eat the crickets. he then removed the bin.

    Hey Kat,
    Re: your recent video on animals you won't go out of your way for, did you get rid of your malaysian jewel or is there a chance of an update on the little fella? Recently got some super blue S. polymorphia's, and am looking at a heros as well. The NA species seem to be so much easier to care for in my very limited experience lol

    I'm not afraid of much. But centipedes give me major creepies. It was due to an incident where I was home alone and found a giant centipede crawling on my bedroom floor right before bedtime. When I tried to catch and release it outside it freaked out and was running around my bedroom like crazy. It then ran under my bed and I had to search for it. I was finally able to catch and release it but it was terrifying 😣😵‍💫😵

    If it provides any comfort, getting tagged on the finger by a Scolopendra is better than the arm or any other meatier part of the body due to the nature of their venom.
