Boy is it a lot of work removing white supremacist comments!
    Anyways - time for CORRECTIONS/DISCLAIMERS:
2:01 - Wrong borders! While similar to the borders of the time - it is in fact the modern borders of the state of Haiti and the Dominican Republic
1:23 - While these names have indeed been used to describe the whole island they're not very accurate terms to use - especially today.

Maybe don't censor comments then. Let idiots expose themselves. It's also a pretty hard pass for me when one subjective person, you, get's to decicde what is a white supremacist comment. No thanks, breathing is white supremacy these days to some people. Also, there's like maybe 10k in the entire world, press X to doubt that you had a load of them in here.
Would also be nice if you'd publicly state you'll remove any commemts glorifying or downplaying what happened to the innocents(mostly women and children, perhaps a few men) whites during all this, but I doubt you will.
Oh that virtue, always just out of reach to those of us who are only doing it for the social currency.

@@aarontynne6004 I would just call you stupid. Since that's your obvious take. The Haitian revolution summons the white racists who love to suddenly give a shit about the "innocent" women and children slavers. As if they didn't literally own other people and deliberately use massive violence to work tons of slaves to death.

    • @FeatureHistory

@@aarontynne6004 For 5 years I did refrain from moderating my comment sections, but I now feel strongly that if I'm going to continue to cover and discuss controversial and traumatic subjects that I need to step in to prevent the harmful permeation of hateful disinformation. I feel while a great deal of my audience are great people, I've inadvertently allowed a subset of bigots to attach themselves to my content.
I know this because I see their comments every day - and while my own moderation is mostly a Sisyphean task, I hope it'll be better than nothing. I fully intend to continue to allow comments that I disagree with or that even directly insult me, but I will step in and remove comments that reinforce hatred and bigotry against marginalised groups - especially when they do so with lies and the deliberate omission of facts.
I'm sorry if my initial comment came off as a bit combative, I got a bit worked up focusing on the nastiness in the comment section. I would've fully agreed with you when I was younger, but now I think differently. In my own very videos I have made harmful comments, mostly under the guise of ironic comedy, but still I accidentally helped encourage this small part of my community to feel confident in their bigotry. It's important that I at the very least do something to rectify this now that I'm older, and I like to think, wiser. I hope you can understand where I'm coming from.

Hello from someone who was born and raised in Haiti, I appreciate you doing videos on the Haitian Revolution. It is not talked about enough. The Haitian Revolution is complex and it is nearly impossible to give it a shot, even when focusing from the arrival of the Europeans to the rule of the whole island by Toussaint Louverture, in 12 minutes. I believe you did a good job overall but there are couple points that could be emphasized on.
Three revolutions in one: Yes, the Haitian Revolution was inspired by the French Revolution, which at its turns was inspired by the American Revolution. But it is important to realize that all 3 main classes on the island (Whites, Affranchis, Enslaved People), were fighting for something. Among the White class existed the people that were loyal to France and those who wanted an independent Saint-Domingue ruled by the Whites in which slavery would still be maintained. The White plantation owners who were for separation from France called themselves "Pompons Rouges", they were for a lot more representations, less taxations and the ability to trade with any countries and at the price they deem fit best (Lot of connections with the American Revolution). The Loyalists called themselves "Pompons Blancs" , and they were for the structure of the French Monopoly to be kept in place. As you mentioned, the Affranchis were for Equal Rights to the Whites as suggested in the Code Noir, the last one was a set of laws regarding the French colonies in the Caribbean at the time. Lastly, you had the Enslaved People fighting for their freedom.
Lastly, Sonthonax did not abolish slavery in all French colonies out of courtesy, it was due to direct pressure from Toussaint Louverture. When all rebels were fighting for freedom for their own clan, Toussaint demanded that slavery to be abolished in all French colonies.

You touched on a VERY important point, we must understand and RESPECT the history that occurred in Haiti, with historical facts and studies from the time and today, to understand the dynamics From conflicts. For that I recommend the channel (História Pública) history professor Ian Neves, who has extensive documents and academic rigor on the Haitian revolution, the name of the video is História Pública - Revolução Haitiana, The professor will even talk about how she influenced Brazil. For those interested, I recommend Georges by Alexandre Dumas, who was himself mixed race. It is about a 'mullato' who attempts to lead a slave revolt in Mauritius, get revenge on white colonialists, and marry a white woman. His father is a slave owner and his brother is a pirate slave trader. It's gives a very interesting insight into what living on plantation colonies is like and also insight into what Dumas' own views might have been (or what he may have felt able to write).

Yes there were horrible killing between every faction and mostly it was due to the color of their skill but that does not justify what what Haitian was gone true in 231 years of their independence. I like the fly-in icons and pictures. But it is too much when used for all text. I think making text appear most of the time, rather than letting in fly-in, would be easier on the eyes. Thanks for the vid.

I can't possibly stress enough how much of a fucking shame is the fact that your videos don't pass 1M views. Like this video just like every other should in my opinion reach 5M every god damn time. For real it's absolutely infuriating, I hope one day you'll be able to live from it and that this comes soon because those videos are above top notch. The style is unique and the information always well brought, and yet you're an outsider in the big circle of history channels on this site and I fucking hate that. Anyway of course amazing video like always, can't wait for the next one take care.
