The Haitian Revolution - The Slave Society - Extra History - Part 1
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 17. 01. 2020
- đ The Haitian Revolution: The Slave Society - The Haitian Revolution is a unique historical event in many ways. It was both an offshoot of the French Revolution, but also an anti-colonialist revolution. It was also the second American nation to successfully win its independence. But before we can talk about the Revolution itself, we have to talk about how influential Haiti was to France's economy and how it's complicated social structure primed it for revolt and revolution. Because here, in the colony built upon the countless bodies of the enslaved, sugar is king. But not for long.

When your country is so well known for revolutions, that your colony has four revolutions at the same time.
Revolution part 2: Electric Boogaloo.
Revoluception
Robert Walpole!? You started this didnât you!?
Man let me tell you about MĂ©xico.
>When you have a revolution to restore the old government in the middle of being governed by the revolutionary government and having a revolution in your colony only to be squashed by the revolutionary government that subsequently has 2 revolutions
When your revolution becomes so revolutionary that your colony become revolutionary and the new post revolutionary government in the mainland has to accept the revolution in the colony and the colonyâs independence

Woah buddy, to many "revolutionary" 's

Man's capacity for rationalization is incredible.
They thought the slaves were stupid because they pretended not to understand basic things and orders, not because of some "lack of motivation".

An American doctor theorized in the 1850s that the slaves' desire to escape has to be caused by a widespread mental disorder. So... yeah.

The Haitian Revolution is completely separate from France and the French Revolution. It was a war against slavery so obviously native or African slaves had been fighting before then.
They didn't include Makandal's Rebellion. It's the precursor to the Haitian Revolution were he and Boukman tried to poison the white slave owners. But it failed after someone was tortured for information.

It's fascinating that this colony was so close to revolution that you had multiple factions, all of which were aiming for different goals and opposed each other as much as the government they wanted to change or overthrow.
And in the end that in-fighting between the priviledged classes meant the slave uprising for once could succede. If only the free-black and poor-white weren't such assholes, and the rich-white so greedy.. justice might never have been served... ehm, never mind then :D

This is such an interesting topic that almost never gets covered. Once again Extra Credits is expanding the CZcams arsenal of incredible historical videos.
I have my fingers crossed and I'll wait until the end; there's a video with millions of views that does an atrocious job of covering this topic. I do like the fact that the map for the colony of Saint Domingue is accurate as I often see people using the modern day map of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
EDIT: Another thing that is accurate is that a large number of the slaves that were arriving had military experience fighting in civil wars in their homeland. So the French colonist were actually importing a trained army.

This affects me personally. I have Haitian heritage and my family took part in the revolution. I've always been proud of my family heritage. After the revolution my family took in the new goverment for several years till the dictator took over and many of my family were excuted or fled to the US. Thank you for doing a show on it đđč
I have ancestors who apparently were in the slave uprising of spartacus, apparently they got nailed on a cross.
As a Haitian, I thank all who worked on this project as our history is rarely acknowledged by others
In fairness, this is complex. In other fairness, even a very incomplete explanation can help familiarize people with the basic terms and people's involved and make more accurate telling easier later.
I think my favourite paraphrase of the sentiment of Haiti's slaves was so eloquently made by John Green of Vlog Brothers/Crash Course fame. "Yeah, hi. Screw all of you!"
@Painted Dead These guys were like "every side sucks, so let's form our own."
Just to clarify, the revolution was not fought with machetes, at the revolution time, the former slaves had a well disciplined and well equipped and powerful army fully battle tested by driving the British and the Spanish out of Saint Dommingue.

Came here to say this. A great resource on a frankly complicated topic.
Iâve always loved learning about the Haitian revolution, I think itâs probably one of the more unique events that took the world by storm.
I have wanted to see a video on this. The first person in my family who came to America was a French slave owner who had a plantation. He was killed in the revolution but they didnât kill his wife and child and let them escape to New Orleans. And after this my family just stayed in Louisiana.

I saw this notification and did a double take. I am Haitian and I thought that Iâd never see a series devoted on my countryâs/ancestors history. This is such an important event in history. unfortunately the repercussions have stunted the potential rise of this countryâs greatness because it did (and still does) have the potential of being successful. Iâm just grateful for this series because now thousands of people around the world can learn about this monumental event in history that they probably wonât ever learn about in textbooks. I canât wait to see the rest of the series and I thank extra credit for shining a light on my peopleâs history. I could shed a tear â€ïž

For those who donât know, after the Haitians become independent they burned the entire nation. All plantations and infrastructure. It economically crippled them and they still deal with it today.

The flag isn't wrong at 3:45.
The Tricolore was made in 1790, and it was originally red, white, and blue from left-to-right. This changed to be the reverse in 1794. The Haitian Revolution started in 1791. That's why the flag is backwards at 3:45.

One of the most interesting and unique revolutions in the world.
