  • 📜 The Haitian Revolution: The Slave Society - The Haitian Revolution is a unique historical event in many ways. It was both an offshoot of the French Revolution, but also an anti-colonialist revolution. It was also the second American nation to successfully win its independence. But before we can talk about the Revolution itself, we have to talk about how influential Haiti was to France's economy and how it's complicated social structure primed it for revolt and revolution. Because here, in the colony built upon the countless bodies of the enslaved, sugar is king. But not for long.

The Haitian Revolution is completely separate from France and the French Revolution. It was a war against slavery so obviously native or African slaves had been fighting before then.

I read about this a few years back, and the Wikipedia pages on various topics related to this are frustratingly spotty in places, or at least were at the time, so this is amazing and helps summarize matters into something highly digestable that'll serve as a good jumping off point. It's super useful, too, and this info is relevant to some historical fantasy fiction I'm writing with a couple of friends. Thanks!

5:50 so this is actually how my mother's family got "Started". This is the story I was told: My mother's ancestors (on her father's side) were originally from Denmark and were land owners. However, one of the men fell for a female slave and free and married her behind his families back. Years later, after he died, he left everything to his oldest child (who was half-black). But because his family was racist and against their union in the first place, they blocked the child from ever receiving his inheritance. Eventually, he wound up in America.

The flag isn't wrong at 3:45.
The Tricolore was made in 1790, and it was originally red, white, and blue from left-to-right. This changed to be the reverse in 1794. The Haitian Revolution started in 1791. That's why the flag is backwards at 3:45.
This is some INCREDIBLE attention to detail.

One of the most interesting and unique revolutions in the world. Happened roughly at the same time as the revolution against the Ottoman rule in my native Serbia and bearing some interesting parallels with it (albeit with the skin color rather than religion being the main rallying factor although the real divide was largely social/judicial in both cases). Can't wait for the sequels, with rise and fall of Francois Toussant Louverture. Keep up the good work 👍.
