    Griffith standing on Guts' sword is probably the most creative throwback they've used yet and it makes me really really REALLY mad. They did good this chapter.

      Absolutely and there's also so much symbolism behind it, I mean guts just suffered the most massive blow and and right as he tries to rise up again and lift the sword griffith immidiately puts it back down. There's so many layers to it and of course the callback to their first duel. I believe this was a very specific moment that miura had described to mori in great detail and thats why it fits so damn well.

    • @patrickzalatoris3206
      @patrickzalatoris3206 Před rokem +45

      Basically saying guts feels as weak and helpless now towards griffith as he did all those years ago when he first challenged griffith to a duel, he lost that one, and was basically griffiths most powerful weapon while he was a hawl

    • @scottclay9005
      @scottclay9005 Před rokem +1

      I disagree, it felt like cheap fanservice and not something Miura would have done. I somewhat expected this shot during Guts first sword swing in episode 366. Besides, this moment in their initial conflict immediately led to Guts tackling and beating the shit out of Griffith, it wasnt the "helpless" moment of the caliber this page tries to make you believe.

    • @bootleghollowknight
      @bootleghollowknight Před rokem +48

      @@scottclay9005 It's drawing a direct contrast. Even though in the first fight guts proceeds to beat the shit out of griffith, the fact that he just collapses here is an intentional contrast meant to show how low of a point he's at and how helpless he is in the face of everything.

    • @scottclay9005
      @scottclay9005 Před rokem

      @@bootleghollowknight I don't think so, you are giving Mori and crew far too much credit. It was simply used as an evocative image. It wasnt as though it was a triumphant moment for him in volume 4, also not an utter defeat or an "I couldn't touch him!" moment. It would have worked better at the start of their confrontation in 366. This entire Beast of Darkness sequence makes no sense in regards to how it works.

      @@TheGreenKnight500 it sounds cliche but maybe griffith can only be harmed by someone who loves him? Not romantic love but love love
      Currently all guts has is hate for his old best friend, he hasn't empathized with why he sacrificed everyone to become a God hand he hasnt put himself in griffiths shoes or thought about what griffith went through when he was gone (not justifying griffith he is a shitty person), but maybe when guts learns empathy he can harm griffith,
      And that's why griffith was able to be slapped by Rickert because rickert didn't hate griffith yet because he wasn't at the eclipse to see what happen ?
      Griffith is kind of like estarossa from the seven deadly sins, anyone who harbors hate or negative emotion towards him cannot harm him, but someone who harbors feelings of love and caring may harm him!

      @@andrew-rn9ui I've had a similar idea in the past. I don't think it'll be quite so simple and cliche, but I think the love between Guts, Casca, and even the moonlight boy will be the key to victory. I've even wondered if the way to defeat Griffith is to make the moonlight boy's personality completely take over. Guts's final hurdle may be letting go of his anger towards Griffith. I don't mean they'll become friends again or something, but he'll just learn to let go of his hatred for his own sake and finally have some inner peace. Miura was a big fan of the original Star Wars trilogy, and you can look to the ending of that to see what I mean.

      i actually want him to give into the beast of darkness i feel that in order for Guts to truly overcome the beast of darkness he first has to experience what it's like to loose to it so he can eventually come back from it and embrace it as apart of who he is.
      i think if Guts were to be consumed by the beast of darkness but just for a temporary amount of time like say an arc or maybe at least half of an arc. we can truly get a glimpse of just how dangerous a Guts with no form of morality or retraint is capable of. it shouldn't be permanent tho he should eventually come back from the darkness or at the very least embraces it as apart of him but first i want to see how OP and dangerous he is when he's controlled by it.

    The last two chapters have really been so good artistically. And by that I mean real ART in the meaningful way.
    Casca's and guts' sides really make me feel like the ideal sword will play a big part.
    Casca's eyes especially. Her right eye was swirling getting more focused until she went berserk. And then she has clear eyes for a moment before she fell, and said she needed to get back. Then going back to being more rough.
    While her left eye looks more chaotic at first from the light of the tree. Then when she comes to her senses it then shows. What I think looks like a person screaming turning into a swirl. Possibly with the silhouette of Isidro.
    And after she spots the vase we next see it after she goes berserk. And we see it's a sword from her perspective. Outlined by light, and in a shape. Maybe more like guts holding out the dragon slayer, or a similar sword.
    Making it reminiscent of the astral world.
    There also might be zodd in the upper right of her left pupi beside the sword. Possibly fighting against or getting his right arm cut off by her sword. Then when her eyes go back to rough there is one last face in that eye.
    On guts' side he was left in a fetal like position, in a spiral surrounded by darkness using his cloak. Possibly representing am impending rebirth. Before getting back to him we see that the world tree is actually spirals looking like water spouts going into a giant eye. Reminiscent of the idea of evil.
    Getting back to guts he is struggling with his issues. His negative feelings manifesting as the dog. Not as large as it was at one point, but much more defined than ever before. Sitting on the sword.
    I really like the representation of the drop of liquid being used for memories. With it's placements for casca being in her thoughts, and waking her up so she could fight and find some clarity.
    And for guts in this situation. As he tries to lift his sword but physically and mentally can't. Throwing up. With his memories and negative feelings he relied on now make him sick, and weigh him down. Leaving him on the floor covering his form in darkness. And his sword damaged. Implying from Godot's words that it needs to be reforged. Symbolizing again a rebirth for guts.
    I also like the kushans not actually hurting any despite looking scary. And also their curious looks when they see guts. Guts is at a crossroads for good or bad. And I hope the kushans will help guts get the help he has desperately needed for a while now.

As the line between the astral and physical realms overlap more and more, it could actually have manifested itself (at least partially) in an astral way. Also, what kind of "power" is it offering Guts? The power that anger (the beast) grants guts has been shown not to be enough when up against the likes of Giffith, so I'm wondering what kind of power it's referring to...

    Guts seeing Griffith after lifting his sword really shows the mind state he's in rn, the sword has always been his safety net and security blanket but after he realized he couldn't touch Griffith on Elfhelm it reminded him of when Griffith dodged his attack during Golden Age.
    And now we sail the Hiatus ship and keep on struggling

    • @TheGreenKnight500
      @TheGreenKnight500 Před rokem +3

      I just thought of something too. Guts is having trouble lifting his sword and he envisions Griffith standing on it, weighing it down. Griffith is (metaphorically) making his sword too heavy to lift, holding down the one thing that always gave Guts comfort. (Casca is also "his sword" as she once was for Griffith. Casca and Guts' sword are symbolically linked).

  • @thedistordedbadger
    @thedistordedbadger Před rokem +4

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but using the behelit is not a choice. It might activate on him when he is at the bottom of despair and the pressure to sacrifice somebody could be his own life since being branded in an eclipse most likely means he'd have to survive being attacked by hundreds of apostles. Fighting to defend his friends could be a major turning point since he'll be fighting to protect instead of out of blind rage. I could see this fitting into the story quite well

    It formed inside of the astral world starting from the moment two branded people, Guts and Casca, traveled together. Two branded people essentially create an even larger distortion that was so strong they were potentially one of the many catalysts for the Birth Ceremony. The interstice that forms around them should be even more severe than usual, too. In this situation, the “mind affects matter” rule comes into play, with Guts forming his Beast of Darkness inside of the Astral World.
    That being said one can assume the beast of darkness is an entity that was manifested from guts trauma but it very much is real not just his imagination and it’s never actually been confirmed by kentaro so yea safer to assume it’s very much real now.

    Honestly, I'm worried for Guts. Like, *really* worried for the man here.
    On one hand, we've seen Guts come back from similar situations, stronger, more resolute than before. I personally feel like Guts can come back from this situation at his most kickass yet.
    On the other hand, Guts has NEVER fallen this hard before. I don't think there's ever been a point where he 100% couldn't do ANYTHING about whatever jam he's in. Even in the Eclispse, Guts fought tooth and nail until he was subdued...but here, he's largely struggling (heh) to get even get up. And now it's clear that the Beast of Darkness is going to either sink or swim very soon. Either guts tames this part of himself, or he falls to its wiles and goes full-on into pure, unadulterated rage and depravity.
    It makes me scared that we might never get to see a situation like Elfhelm again. I'm all for where this is going.

    Happy to see your post! Always like your videos. Was basically hitting refresh on your page today waiting for a video lol.
    I think though that Isidro isn't over it at all, he's just acting like it doesn't bother him because he wants to maintain his outward tough guy persona he wants people to think he has, but he's still just a kid. Males inparticular tend to bottle up their emotions and not deal with them because they think having emotions makes them weak. Chapter 237 anyone? Common theme in the Manga is the lesson that ignoring your emotions leads to nothing good. I suspect an emotional breakdown sometime soon for Isidro. It's funny because you talked about this very thing for Guts at 4:57 in your video, but didn't apply it to Isidro's current situation at the start of the chapter.
    Yes, this is a 'don't poke the bear moment'. Curious if you think all the Kushan eyes being white is significant, they seem a little deranged too? Perhaps controlled?

  • @shawngriffith6901
    @shawngriffith6901 Před rokem +8

    there's a lot to unpack here but I'll just talk about Guts, Griffith and the beast of darkness.
    Griffith said when he returned Guts sword on their first prolonged interaction that it was a well crafted and exquisite sword, but one Griffith could never himself wield. Swords have a lot of representation in Berserk. Guts sees a sword as a part of himself. it's his comfort and his sorrow. a tool he never should have had to wield to protect himself, but through it found places for himself in the world that are torn down by Griffith's dream. when Casca begins to travel with him Guts asks himself that when he was only fighting for him his sword was heavy, but bearable, has it ever been heavier than now when he must protect himself and another. the weight is a reference to his sorrow and despair. guts believes that people can fill that role as well, to be what wards away the darkness of the world with you. the first time since his branding Guts sits in the elf cave and ponders if he'll ever be ale to sleep at night again with his anxiety of not having a sword in that moment, even knowing that he's entirely safe he can't sleep without one. he then has a memory flash of Casca sitting in the cave, she is also his sword.
    The beast of darkness is real, it is an astral being. Schierke senses as much when she first sees the sword, a malicious presence of some kind. him appearing from the sword is the first time we've seen him do so, but it aligns with the curse magic the dragonslayer has that was used on Ganishka. he's a dark entity like apostles and the Godhand and operates through Byrites. the weight element that can cause obsession and madness, the type of curse Ganishka had. Guts has recognized that Griffith has added weight to his sword to the point that he can no longer lift it, the despair is too much even for Guts. He tries to use his hatred of Griffith to fuel himself like he has in the past, and that flame is dead, the fuels true source of sadness can not be sparked into anger like it once did. the beast of darkness now sits on his sword, making it unobtainable until the beast of darkness has been moved. it's dramatically reduced in size, before it was so large that it engulfed guts entirely, now it's maybe 1/5 the size it was before. the beast of darkness is Guts shadow (look at Jungian Psychology if you don't know) and as the shadow shrinks it becomes a more focused point of black. becoming more desperate and aggressive for expression.
    all of this and so much more is swirling in Guts head and he doesn't know how to navigate it, he's always recognized what to do after the fact. I hope that it is Puck who brings him back to himself, he's kind of the angel on guts shoulder. he's never listened to him, but when the devil is in your other ear perhaps he will.

      in a ideal world we d follow caska rtrieveher consciouness by herself and then pay the debt she has woth guts and help him, but after this chapter I see that the things are going on another path. The forge smith told guts he had to master the armor, so thats how guts is going to free himself from thie nightmare he was put into, In my opinion, he should free the ship slaying every kushan and a few magicians and go away from his friends, he SHOULDNT move on from the pain on the next chapters, it would feel so ilogical and superficial if on the same night caska has taken guts rise on... it a must for him to come back with TIME, time that could be used for the other character ( kids ) to grow as well, give time for caska to free herself, and time for the world to feel grifs weight through the years, it would be comical if falconia falls just on the same years it was built. If those Kushans are being leader by Silat and Rickert and they go to that Bakiraka village, Guts will leave them there to master the Berserker Armor + the Beast of Darkness with Skull-Knight, but not for revenge and neither for the fear he'll kill them at any moment, but also because they don't stand a chance against the armys of Falconia, sure, they've faced some serious shit like the Troll cave, the Kushan monsters and the Sea God, but they're not strong enough to take down apostles alone, we saw how Serpico and Isidro dealt with them on Flora's hutt, Schierke is not half as powerful as Griffith or Sonia at this point of the story and Guts was on near death state everytime after he faced apostles (the fights against Wyald, the Count and Rosine were enough proofs of It), so it makes sense Guts would leave them there because he don't want them to have the same end as the OG Band of the Hawk!

    Imo this is one of the best chapters Mori & co. has put out yet. Visually it looks really good and all the characters look pretty much themselves like Miura drew them. Farnese's neck is little weird in one panel but that's pretty much it XD I'm not still huge fan of this blander / greyish style compared to how Miura used really contrasts and lots of black. But I think this is the style we go 'til the end and it's not even fair to compare it to Miura's perfect style.
    Plotwise it's also getting interesting and there are lots of ways it can go forward from this point on. Guts and rest of the company might be separated (as Miura said in one interview). Guts might go in full berserk mode and massacre lots of Kushan soldiers but some of them manage to escape with rest of the crew as prisoners. Or Guts might save the day and this whole attack is just a little bump in the road. Or maybe all of them are taken prisoners and eventually Guts and Rickert meet again.

    Earlier in the story we see that Griffith sent a war party to effectively kill Flora and the forest spirit tree. After doing the same on Elfhelm there are still survivors, but the main rescue party retreated because saving the King is the top priority. Do you think Griffith or his generals could have sent human forces in their stead, in order to contain the magic users on the ship knowing they would have little power because of the lack of ethereal connection?
