    I always liked how the Beast of Darkness took the shape of a Hound. It's a clever call back to when Casca said "You're just a Mad Dog!" And it's as though that comment took form subconsciously to become what the Beast of Darkness is.

    Happiest ending: guts leaves his quest for revenge behind to be with Casca after they somehow recover her full memory.
    Worst ending: guts kills griffith and becomes the beast of darkness in the process
    Bittersweet ending: guts kills Griffith and manages to restore casca's memory entirely but dies in the process.
    Most likely ending: something I've never even thought of.

      I don't think Guts can leave Griffith alive in the best ending. I highly doubt that Griffith's goal ends with humanity thriving. And even if Griffith is perfectly happy with his current white knight role I doubt the other God hand are content with that status quo. Guts will have to deal with him, but he has to leave behind the idea of doing it for revenge otherwise his hate or beast of darkness will consume him. He has to do it for the future and betterment of mankind and a future with Casca.

    Gut's internal conflict derives from Carl Jung's concept of shadow integration. The beast of darkness is Guts's shadow, it is all the traits that guts rejects and represses and as such his shadow grows stronger. The impulses becoming more and more frequent, you cannot defeat your shadows but merely gain understanding and acceptance of their existence. Doing so grants and person the access to some of the greatest gifts they were blessed with. Think of what happened to Naruto when he resisted the nine tailed fox and look at the contrast when they began to work together. Guts' beast of darkness may be his greatest enemy right now, but in the end it will serve to be his answer to Femtos God like power.

    • @akaza297
      @akaza297 Před 4 lety +37

      That is what I noticed, it is right now for Guts never ending battle. He simply does not know how to deal with it, he leaves it to the pure luck, be it by him snapping from the control of his shadow or relying on Schrieke to do it. I believe, what u said, it is best for him to approach and accept it as a part of him; which it already is. Firstly, he has to win that battle and then focus on Griffith/Femto.
      The beast is growing stronger and stronger, and later it is going to be late, and someone will pay the price.

      Yeah, I've never thought Guts has to get rid of the Berserker armor. It's ironically saved him and allowed him to protect the people he loves many, many times. He's gotta accept that the darkness within him is part of himself. I think he's slowly getting there. Also there is no way that he will be able to stand against Femto without it. Because when he does, revenge will probably be on the back burner for Guts in his mind.

    I kinda wonder a couple things.....
    1.) I wonder if Guts Beast Of Darkness is so powerful due to him existing on both the astral and the physical plane.
    2.) If someone who is mainly pure of heart, having little to no real anger or rage wore the Berserker armor, would it have any effect or just be really badass normal armor?

    • @the-outsider
      @the-outsider Před 4 lety +17

      I've always wondered about that second one too. I mean the duality of light and dark must exist within everyone but if one doesn't circum to the darkness and instead embrace the light will the good will also give a power boost? Or perhaps that's wrong also. What if accepting the duality and being at peace and harmony within is the key to proper utilizing the armors full potential.
      Guts has done some pretty shitty things and is out of balance because of his guilt and uncertainty of if his actions. But he seems to be starting to realize that what he is doing (atleast now) is for the greater good in a way or atleast finally accepting it and isn't fueled so much by his anger and want for vengeance anymore instead more so to protect those he holds dear in so feeding the good wolf now so to say, restoring balance of the yin and yang duality neccessary to be in harmony to be truly at peace.
      Then what? Does the armor stop working or maybe that's the strongest version of it yet? What if that is what allows Guts to finally stand toe to toe with Griffith?
      Skull knight may have been using it wrong thinking that's the only way or the thing about the former owner died inside it (which he said it was his) was a metaphor. The person he was is no more, changed entirely into someone unrecognizable to his former self. His current armor or body whatever it is white and black in a way now. Although that's most likely just cause it's bone white and shadow not actually white for the sake of cool imagery and I'm trying to force some head cannon into places it doesn't belong lol.
      Sorry that's long as fuck but it got me thinking kinda rambling a bit.

    • @agamerforgod4088
      @agamerforgod4088 Před 4 lety +11

      Well Guts can just wear the armor normally as he does when walking around. Though I mean that's nothing special I suppose. The armor also grinds up or tears up it's user, and I don't think it's ever been stated that the grinding is because of one feeding off hatred. The armor itself simply brings out one's BoD in greater proportions I think. I recall that being said, albeit not in the exact way I said it. So I feel like the armor is in comparison more like a symbiote I suppose? In the sense that it allows one greater power for a tradeoff, and in a sense takes over when it needs to. Though the BoD is more the symbiote than the armor, the armor being a vessel that brings out one's BoD greatly. Sorry, horrible comparison I know. I wonder if there is any way to better the armor, rid oneself of the trade off. Would it eevn be fair to do so? Not that fair really matters, but Miura doesn't seem like the "Oh here have this Op thing and no trade off." Kind of guy you know? Even the current Band's magical weapons aren't nearly as good as the Berserker Armor so I'd say they don't compare in the whole simply getting good gear aspect. I do wonder though, I always do say Miura is the Wild Card. We can only usually theorize about that which we already know a decent amount about. And future plotlines usually are alluded to only by SK, whom is very unspecific and often leaves things very vague. But you know who would understand this armor nonsense? The man who made it! Read the new chapter guys, we're getting there.

    • @electroeel148
      @electroeel148 Před 2 lety +5

      Here's the thing. There is a very violent, near malevolent presence inside the armor itself, the Od which is basically the spiritual energy in Berserk Lore, making it essentially "Alive" in a sense. The Od inside the armor is reactive to whomever chooses to wear the armor, often mirroring the person's own Ego, the culmination of all their dark desires and wants that they would otherwise lock away within themselves. That's why when Guts first put on the armor, it changed its appearance from that of a metallic skeleton to that of a Black Beast, reflecting Guts' desire to maim kill and slaughter all in his path as he has long done so since before joining the Hawks.
      I do not believe that a person that is "Pure of Heart" can completely overcome the negatives that come alongside wearing the cursed armor, nor would they be able to use it to its full capabilities as the Armor's Od feeds on their Ego to give a degree of its power.

  • @FraterSoddi
    @FraterSoddi Před 4 lety +27

    Thanks for another well thought out video.
    Well, the name of the series IS "BerserK", from the Norse "bear -shirt", referencing warriors who became a bear in battle - but Guts' Beast of Darkness is a dog, not a bear, not a wolf, not a wild animal. Dogs can be tamed. Dogs are our oldest allies. Schierke (sp?) is essential to Guts taming his Beast.
    This is Musashi territory - the taming of the wild and powerful warrior by a series of instructors who focus his strengths, gentle him, guide him to his final battle. In the Berserk manga, it is done by love and companionship - less Casca's romantic love than the others' in his party and in his world. I think Guts will stay human, even if/when he dies. Because that is his victory.
    Hey, where are the dwarves? Dwarves made the Berserker armor and possibly SK's. Might they be on Elfhelm (sp?) and can they help? Was Godot a dwarf?
    An aside - in a earlier live stream you suggested that Flora and SK might know of Guts' origins and path through their knowledge of Causality (removed Causality chapter inference HERE). Could it be that both could see Guts hurtling at them through Causality like a steam engine through the fog? The Flower Storm King of Fairies does not seem much surprised at Guts - and she is KIND to him and his party. Is pure human WILL, Guts' will, more powerful than causality?

    This concept of the beast exists in sufism too.
    The analogy is, within the soul there are 3 characters. The beast, the devil, and the angel/sage. Every human have this.
    The beast strives in eating, consuming, mating, sleeping etc. The devil strives in sowing corruption and harming others. The angel strives in the noble quality of human being and yearns to be closer to God. All of these 3 are in a constant battle against each other to control the self. And none of them can destroy one or another since the body needs all 3 of them.
    The animal is needed so the self will feed the physical body. The devil is needed to protect the body from the harm of others. The angel is needed so the self can achieve his true noble purpose. Each does have their role so you cant erase them.
    When the beast wins control, the self will be akin to animals, obsessing over food, sex and leisure. When the devil takes over, the self becomes obsessed with sowing corruption and in hurting others. Only when the angel is in control the other 2 will be suppressed and the man will become noble. This is the point of sufism.
    Im just mentioning this coz idk. maybe its an interesting pov.

    • @greatness2421
      @greatness2421 Před 4 lety +21

      Yeah.. that is absolutely stupid and it's not going to happen. "Happy endings" are not inherently bad, even in a story like Berserk. And in fact, making a story incredibly bleak misses the point of fiction. It turns it into an edge/horror fest without any substance. Good fiction always has that "light at the end of the tunnel" that greatly supersedes any darkness. Whether that light is in the form of eternal rest (death) or afterlife of some sort, it has to be there. And I see Guts getting ahold of that light at the very end. Making him tread a path of tragedy for eternity is subversion for the sake of subversion for the edgelords that don't like the current lighter atmosphere of Berserk when compared to some earlier arcs.

      But then again it could just end like the old man logan path
      He does everything bad
      Then good
      Gets afew things stripped away and dies a old man death with the memories of his friends he once knew
      And not a death of battle

      Everyone probably expected that and move on.
      If he said that he'll get a good ending then people will be more curious especially in a series like Berserk.

    The Beast of Darkness reminds me of The Maxx in a very obtuse way.
    -The Maxx and The Beast represent the Animus and Shadow, respectively, for Julie Winters and Guts
    -The Outback is analogous to the Astral Realm
    -The Maxx and the Beast both born into the setting after the main characters commit their most reprehensible actions.
    -The dallop of Outback that envelopes and animates Maxx's body (he's the reanimated corpse of a homeless man that Julie killed with her car) adheres to him like how the Berserker Armor does on Guts and the shape it takes on is the closest the Beast actually gets to actually manifesting in the real world.

    Beast of Darkness is what makes Guts struggle and fight 100 soldiers, 100 apostles, 100 hopeless battles, Berserk is very grounded to reality though portraying larger than life characters. Message is clearly to keep fighting for your humanity and existence against causality and destiny. I think casca will betray guts in future that's why beast of darkness wants him to kill her or forget her.

      Yes in manga chp-345 tiny Casca wants to meet Griffith(she had experienced multiple orgasms while femto took her during eclipse manga chp-86+87)her moonlight child.
      Also Guts crawled out of a corpse mother dead for weeks, survived war, brutality in mercenary camps, became young lone mercenary who sliced armored knights with single strike from his giant sword, bested band of the hawk also managed to outsmart griffith their leader, bested zodd in humanoid form survived zodd in apostle form, he's out done impossible legends, defeated wayld hound ape apostle after fighting midland army and bakirakas to rescue femto before eclipse. Beast of darkness gets stronger in presence of femto, god hand, apostle etc, however it becomes weak because of moonlight boy(Griffith physical)
      Casca loves only griffith, Griffith loves only guts, Guts loves casca, casca gets rejected fucks guts, griffith gets rejected fucks princess. moonlight boy defends all 3 from one another.

    Remember Guts has a behelit that we don't know who the true owner is. I wouldn't be shocked if the ending is fucked up, somehow involving him sacrificing Caska to become some crazy apostle version of the wolf of darkness and using that power to somehow kill Griffith.
    Let me ask you this - why has Griffith not killed Guts yet? He has plenty of opportunity to.
    Remember that Griffith went nuts by losing Guts as his righthand man. I could see him still seeking this and orchestrating a destiny where he turns Guts into an apostle, only not working out the way he thought it would and Guts turning on him and killing him (and probably himself too).

    So having been on a bit of a Berserk binge lately, watching a bunch of these videos in particular, my theory for the ending of Berserk is that Guts gets a belith and chooses Griffith as his sacrifice. Think about it for a second, outside of the poetic justice of Griffith being torn apart by the very monsters and demons he chose to become one of (and ultimately killing every single last one of them because he's sooo much more powerful}, you have to choose the people most dear to you, that matter the most, in order to fulfill the ritual. Griffith cared about no one else more than Guts, to the level of obsession Griffith needed Guts in his life. Thats why he was choosen as his sacrifice. Now the opposite side, Guts's singular motivation in the beginning of the manga is finding and murdering Griffith for what he did. Outside of Casca, who he would never sacrifice, Griffith is the most important person in his life. It makes perfect sense to me that Guts, having found a belith, would come before the God Hand and choose Griffith as his sacrifice. Perhaps he then finds some loop hole out of becoming a demon, or maybe he becomes one and goes on to murder the rest of the God Hand and ultimately God himself.

    The suit I believe it to help him incorporate the beast of darkness in a way that's acceptable. Carl jung said that you cant banish your shadow or else you will just relapse but instead you should find a way to implement it in a way that's seen as acceptable. I think that Griffith can be harmed by guts since guts is a sacrifice who was never sacrificed. I mean he still struggled against his telekinetic powers and with his new strength can maybe overpower him with help from his new friends.

  • @bmustardman
    @bmustardman Před 3 lety +2

    Griffith did nothing wrong, or rather unexpected, he wanted his own kingdom and to be THE KING OF HIS OWN KINGDOWN, he had friends and people who loved him, but still longed for more, meaning he was not content with what he had making him willing to sacrifice his current state of prestige and brotherhood for what he truly wanted, the band of the hawk was just a means to an end. Obviously the eclipse presented this in a way that was extremely gruesome and poetic, but if Griffith were to meet a human such as a king who would give him everything he wanted including his own throne in exchange for everything he loved he would have also done it, now i know Griffith had everything taken from him before the eclipse, but if he was healthy and knowing that he could never achieve his goal without sacrificing everything that was "dear" to him he would still do it. I would like to call this philosophical discussion the "Griffith Switch". But really this is human nature and we are presented this kind of situation on micro and macro scales on a daily bases, do you throw a friend/family member under the bus for your own finacial/social gain. Griffith's intentions were always wrong because he wanted a kingdom with him as the crown, i know he intended to make a better life for everybody in midland, but his own prestige took front seat, as seen with the sacrifice of the Band of the Hawk..... edit guts is the opposite of that, at least when it comes to the ones he holds as dear to him, i know he killed a child

    My theory on the Beast of Darkness is that a person who, for whatever reason, is able to partially defy Fate / Causality is also able "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" to be an actual threat to the Godhand. During and after the Eclipse, Femto and Void both bother evading SK and Guts' attacks, which I think indicates those attacks would matter if they landed (if you're truly sure a sword will bounce off your face, letting it is MORE of a dismissive display than a portal-parry).
    But it still costs you. Instead of sacrificing people you cared about to the Eclipse, you have to choose *the fight against the Godhand* over everything else you could've done with being unshackled from Causality. So you "beat" them... by becoming what you would've been as one of them.
    The "Wolf of the Dark Millennium," if you will.

    i can totally see how this explanation correlates to the part where guts becomes something even greater (what we already have seen like Guts vs Grunbeld) only to defeat griffith. Thats his most important task. It is not justice, but revenge and hate that drives him or lets say plays a bigger part here than justice. I can even see how it will eventually to lead to a point, where he is kind of drawn to the decision, where he needs to sacrifice his "dear", only to defeat griffith (behelit-stylish); where the biggest decision of all has to be made - will the evil or light side in himself prevail. They might make him sacrifice casca or his whole group, only to gain more power - maybe the armor drives him even more insane....but i cant see how the armor makes up for what guts is missing to withstand griffith. (iam not fully up to date rn, somewhere where they make it to elfhelm going into this dreamphase).
    Everything leads to a plot, we have seen in many other series and movies - still awesome ofc. Where Guts needs himself to ask the question if it is worth it sacrificing everything, only to get revenge and if the cost will make up for that.
