Finely someone who really knows what a black forest cake really is. My SO tried really hard to get me a black forest cake for my birthday but unfortunately it was just an overly sweet chocolate cake with cherry pie filling with an overly sweet icing and my name spelled wrong.
One of my daughter's teachers was German. And for international day at the school she brought in Black Forest cake. It was literally the best cake I have eaten ever.
I don’t eat many cakes. I have 4 that I like. Black Forest was my first chocolate cake that I fell in love with and to this day I cannot have chocolate cake any other way. My other favs are red velvet and pound cake 😂
Childhood memories of overwhelming amounts of cream and alcohol incoming.. I think I just realised a thing or two about Canadian baking when you, knowing both cultures, referred to Torte as a lighter cake😁 I just subscribed and will continue enjoying your content from afar while munching my simple handheld and definitely not as pretty kind of cakes - more like Streuselkuchen, Rührkuchen and Zopfbrot☺️
Same thing happened to German Chocolate Cake… I often see any regular fudgy chocolate cake with coconut pecan icing being called German Chocolate cake. Not the same.
Yep I agree! The traditional way is so much better! I do something simmiler. I make my own cherry filling with a jar of sour cherries that is canned in semi sweet water. I then thicken some of the cherry water it came in and add the kirsch to it while I thicken it. I then add the cherries to the thickened mixture and proceed to decorate the cake as you do with whipped cream.
Wow your timing couldn’t be better. I was in Germany last week and bought a bottle of Kirsh liquoir as I really wanted to try making a Black Forrest Cake. Yes many of the recipes I’ve seen use the oil based chocolate cake! Thank you for this video explaining what the correct components of a BF cake. Do you have a recipe for it? ❤TIA
@@dddd4731Well, when US-Americans say "My family is german" most of the time it more or less means "some of my ancestors came from Germany 100 years ago". This is not a real black forest cake, period!
The Black Forest Cake my Oma would get from the Commissary would always be so dry and not good! I’ve never had a good Black Forest Cake unfortunately 😕 Maybe one day!
German here and you're absolutely right. Only difference still is, that the cake layers are smaller and that you made the child friendly, virgin version. Schwarzwälder Kirsch is also a fruit brandy, which is used to flavour the cherries with. The amount of alcohol is personal preference and sometimes it's also in the sponge.
I just saw a Black Forest cake with cherry jam and whipped cream and I wanted to comment saying that’s not a real Black Forest cake. But it’s a group of people who hate correction 😂 so I just scrolled. I’m planning on making this cake for my husband as part of our anniversary (which passed but I was broke) I have most things but the cherries and kirsh. I know he will enjoy it.
Died you add the classic Kirschwasser alcohol? It's necessary to soak the cake with tgat but besides you are right ( person from blackforest speaking here)
Originally that sponge cake is soaked in cherry schnapps. Of course you can use a syrup, it's just that not original. I'm a German baker, so that's how I know that little detail. Here you can only call it black forest cake when you used cherry schnapps. Otherwise you would have to label at in a different way that let's customers know there's no alcohol in it. Thanks for showing how it's really made. Nice to see, that you have most of the original recept right and thanks for your channel. I find it really interesting what cake means in other countries. I'm really fascinated about the difference.
@@StillBusyBaking I watch the short and listen to your audio. What I wrote is the definition, that's made by the German law how things have to be named properly. It's not that commonly known. Your right about the sponge cake, cherry and cream. To sell it as an black forest cake in a German bakery you have to use schnapps instead of syrup. If you use syrup you would have to label it as made after block forest cake with syrup instead of schnapps. And yeah, I'm a bit nerdy about those details. Thanks for responding to my comment. I didn't expect that and I hope I haven't offended you. As I mentioned earlier, even in Germany, as long as you are not a baker, this isn't common knowledge.
Personally I never eaten forest cake before but i would eat that because I don’t like buttercream frosting type cake, it a bit too heavy and sugary for me so forest cake would suit my palate
@@jamienedrow4957 Okay, I am not a native English speaker. I didn't know that the German word "Kirsch" is used outside Germany for the German schnapps "Kirschwasser". My mistake.

I love real black forest cake 🥰 Are there alternative versions for kids or people who can't have alcohol that still have a nice cherry syrup in the sponge?
Just simmer the alcohol out of the kirsch. Sends like the best, simplest solution.

The lighter the cake and the less sweet the cake, the better in my opinion. Thank you for educating people about black forest cakes. Schwarzwald!

Amen! There is a bakery in SLC that got me hooked. And I just miss it. I wonder if they are still operational

Do you post your recipes anywhere? I'd love to try this one!

I tried both versions and I actually like the richer cake more. It's not overly sweet and heavy but it's more dense and rich than the sponge.
