  • In this week's Sound for Video Session, we demonstrate how I would mix an interview format podcast. Thanks to Andrew P for sending over the recording to use for the demonstration. We do most of the processing in Adobe Audition and Izotope RX8.
    Thanks to Musicbed for the music for this session - “Why Not” by Utah. Get the best music for your videos at Musicbed: share.mscbd.fm/curtisjudd

    If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses at school.learnlightandsound.com including processing dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F4, F6, F8, and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders. We also just added a course on sound for live-streaming with the ATEM Mini.

      Thanks Todd. Yes, RX8 is a staple for me for my corporate work in particular.

    Wow, this helped me so much, as I'm waiting for iZotope to update to Big Sur, I now know that I definitely don't need my Hindenburg DAW and will be signing up for Audition. You're an excellent teacher!

      Thanks Doug. You can do this in Hindenburg as well, I believe. Happy mixing!

    Hey Curtis, thanks for the great video. How are you liking rx 8? I didn’t even realize there was a new version. You also mentioned a few weeks back that you had a new method of dialogue compression, are you still planning to do a video on this? I tend to still do this in audition as it is just faster for my workflow.

    Hi Curtis, have you ever used side chaining as a way of automating volumes on separate tracks so that when one speaker begins to talk, the other track with the other speaker has its amplitude reduced?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Gary, yes, but there can be some downsides in some situations. If there is a natural pause in the conversation, you end up with double the noise floor as the compressors sit idle. But a sidechain compressor can get most of the job done and then you can jump in and manually manage the longer conversation pauses.

    Interesting. I use Reaper and find some things Audition makes some processes harder. Also, fixing mic bleed with a gate is a bit easier. But I'm not a "pro". Audition doesn't do ripple editing? I've used railroading before and never knew what it was called. Funny how you can learn so much just in the trenches.

      Yes, this is not an endorsement of Audition really. I prefer not to use gates which sometimes miss or get a bit flappy but that's personal preference. Audition can do ripple editing if that's what you want to do. Thanks for coming by!
