‘Permanent Waves’, Rush’s seventh studio album, was originally released in January 1980, and its forward-thinking music signaled a new direction for the Canadian band as it entered a new decade. The six songs encompassing the album encapsulated the breadth of Rush’s formidable progressive chops meshed with its knack for creating radio-friendly arrangements, all elements that were embedded within the grooves of their previous album, 1978’s widely acclaimed Hemispheres. ‘Permanent Waves’ also signified Rush’s first of many recording sessions at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, which was at one point nicknamed the trio’s own personal Abbey Road recording studio.

The more I listen to this song, the more I think it's a masterpiece. It started when I read about this song in a Limelight comment section or something, and the person said it was one of their favourite songs ever, so I decided to listen to it, and I initially thought "eh". BIIIG MISTAKE. It initially came up like half a year later on autoplay while I was studying and it eventually ended up on my playlist, and here we are.

The last time we saw Rush [June 12, 2015], as they began this song, I yelled, "I love this one!" Geddy leaned over the edge of the stage and yelled down to my sister and me in the second row, "Me too!"

I think the boys all agreed la villa was the most difficult to record because they had to do it in 3 separate recordings and cut it together.

This and La Villa Strangiato may be the band's magnum opus..in mother nature's crucible, she concocted the trio of three uber geniuses at the top of their game..the chance of these 3 meeting and having neil at the helm of the ship with lyrics that are beyond meaningful and resonating, is nothing short of astronomical..like one in a gazillion..like a gift from the gods rush was given to us all. I'm not a religious person, but their music touches me at my core..beyond explanation..they are like air for sustenance..a necessity in life...hard to explain...songs that describe such esoteric subjects with ease, interpersonal dynamics..neil was a great observer of life and saw things in a very unique way and his verbiage and vernacular in the lyrics is beyond superb...beyond sad what happened to him..my heart weeps...but he would not want that..we have such a huge legacy to enjoy time and time again...bravo for all they have done.

This is about how people can forget about nature because of technology, and how we must value this blue planet❕
There are some odd 7/8, 6/8 and 3/4 time signatures in “Natural Science” (1980) along with the normal 4/4. Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson stated : “I can pick a song that was a hard song to play and feel that was what was challenging and developed a particular style and difficult songwriting. ‘Natural Science’ from those days is one of those songs. Hard to play, the parts were really interesting to develop and were challenging, and the songwriting itself was a challenging experience.”
Producer Terry Brown and assistant Kim Bickerdike used oars in lake water to make the splashing sounds at the beginning of the piece. ❤️🌎💚

The opening lines of this song resonate so clearly, and along with many RUSH fans we may relate to this. As a child I was brought by my bearded scientist father to a special place for camping stays in a place in Western Washington state called "Tongue Point" on the north shore of the Olympic Peninsula. It was/is a paradise for tide pool experience, observing the tides going in and out, and perfectly describes what I think this song is about. I marveled at it as a child and have returned several times with several friends to experience those little pools of impressively diverse contained aquatic worlds.
    "When the ebbing tide retreats
    Along the rocky shoreline
It leaves a trail of tidal pools
    In a short-lived galaxy
    Each microcosmic planet
    A complete society
    A simple kind mirror
    To reflect upon our own
    All the busy little creatures
    Chasing out their destinies
    Living in their pools
They soon forget about the sea"
    ... Wonderful!

as an 8 year old , with my 16 piece drum set made from every pillow in the house , i sat stunned , overjoyed , confused , mesmerized, and unsure of why i felt this way every time this played on the gigantic stereo/cabinet furniture thingy (remember those?)……now , 42 years later , older , wiser , smarter ……….I realize ……i feel the exact same way

Someone in the comments section of a different song compared his style to Gordon Lightfoot, a Great Lakes sort of sound but more rock and less folk. I can honestly kinda hear it. Just so happens that these two masterclass guitarists also grew up in overall the same area (as far as North America goes, North York to Orillia is nothing. ~72 miles and almost a completely straight shot North-Northwest once you hit the 400, they may as well have been neighbors.) Wonder if any kind of local, Ontarian music tradition may have influenced them both?
