‘Permanent Waves’, Rush’s seventh studio album, was originally released in January 1980, and its forward-thinking music signaled a new direction for the Canadian band as it entered a new decade. The six songs encompassing the album encapsulated the breadth of Rush’s formidable progressive chops meshed with its knack for creating radio-friendly arrangements, all elements that were embedded within the grooves of their previous album, 1978’s widely acclaimed Hemispheres. ‘Permanent Waves’ also signified Rush’s first of many recording sessions at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, which was at one point nicknamed the trio’s own personal Abbey Road recording studio.

Thank you Dad for introducing me to Rush. ❤
❤❤❤
Same, I've been listening to this one since i was in elementary! (I am now out of college)
Welcome to Rush!
You would have discovered Rush eventually, and your welcome kids/ grandkids. Couldn't be more proud!
My Dad too! ❤
I stole my first rush album from my dad lol he still complains about it. Long story short we've seen Rush together 3 times.
“If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.” Brilliance! Missing the “Professor.”
You haven't chosen to end the conflict in the middle east, therefore you are equally morally responsible with others who have made that choice. Unless of course we consider the material conditions or grounding factors in which that choice was made under.
@@Feedbackking13 Blah blah f'ing blah, we are appreciating Rush here. Go elsewhere with your diatribe.
@@MorningNapalm don't dumb down Rush, please!
That solo section still blows me away every time. Three of the best to ever pick up their instruments.
EVERY SINGLE TIME after that insane breakdown from all of them, I just have to laugh after the cold chills go away.
SAY IT LOUDER!!
I've been listening to Spirit of Radio and Freewill for 85% of my life. There are always moments that peek through and stop time for me
Are you sure you calculated correctly that is was 85%? Maybe it could have been 90%? Maybe 70%? How would you know? Did you actually keep tabs on the chronology?🤣🤣👍👍🤘🤘🖐🖐🖖🖖
@@JohnKowal-pw6xu I did the math
I love la villa strongato, the trees, Xanadu, red barchetta, working man , fly by night, of course Tom Sawyer, bytor and the snow dog, yyz,

51 years young and still Loving RUSH 2024
Keep it up
Me too!!! 😂 and this band just gets better and more meaningful! Happy 51! 😂❤🎉
I'm 49 now. but I can remember how i feel at that time, when i lsten to them for the first time. They have the worth to be loved forever, i think.
Almost 59 here...one of my favorite high school year bands for sure. Good taste in music never fades!
58 here.
I've seen Rush 7 times and wish it was more like 70 times
Yep me too.
The fans knew Rush were the best.
Took everyone else 40 years
so true
Big facts! 😆💯
Once you go rush you never go back : )
True
They make listening to other music very challenging
It ain’t possibly to stop liking rush
I've been there since 1976
It would have been better if you said "once you Rush, you can't slow down." Ha.
My dad is a huge rush fan I grew up listening to Rush
A song from the golden era of classic rock. This must never die.
I will choose Rush! 🤟🏻
Me too🤘🤘🤘
Me too😎😎🎶

Make no mistake, Alex Lifeson is one of rock's greatest guitarists because he takes you to so many places. He can write heavy badass bluesy riffs, psychedelic soundscapes, weird proggy chord progressions, tasteful acoustic passages, New Wave-style flourishes. And he can play one hell of a face-melting guitar solo.
What's the name of that 7 part 20 minute song? I remember first hearing that and was all "Woah! I'm not even stoned and this is talking to me."
@@lecafard4327 2112
Hi I Recommend a song called 'The Bond Villain' by Robert Nix
AMEN.
I will always consider Jimi Hendrix to be the greatest rock guitarist of all time, but Lifeson is a very close second
RusH was composed of 3 compulsive perfectionist, and genuine good people that do not have any ego trips that have lead to the demise of many successful bands.
Truly GREAT musicians that are also truly great friends.... Resulting in some of the cleanest, tightest most amazing music ever made.
Well put my dude.
True! And inspired sooooo many other bands in a LOT of genres ❤
Amazing insight ❤
humble, real, and so talented ...
Once you understand Rush you have no choice. They are the greatest band ever.
But Cream?
Rush aren't even my favourite band, but they are still the best. That's just facts.
Van Halen/Led Zeppelin would fit that description.

Greatest is queen zeppelin or the beatles. Althought rush in my opinion is better than all those except zeppelin, you just cant argue the best is something different then those three.
RUSH FOREVER
Marry me

Forever isn't long enough.
Forever 😃💯🤘

that section from 4:03 to about 4:37 is freakin' MAGICAL
I can never get enough of that. How can anyone bust on Geddy for his vocals in this section.
My choice is from 3:00 to 4:00 !! But the whole song is perfect 👌
This song and that part in particular is what made me have to go and look up Rush!
My favourite part! I replay that part over and over when I listen to this song. The guitar tone and bass are so good and then Geddys vocals come in and just hit a home run. They must've known it sounded that good.
Yeah! The preceding solo section gets most of the notice, but that part coming out where Alex changes up the riff a bit and then Geddy has one of his most iconic vocal moments. So good.
It's a nice day when Rush floods my subscription feed.
Had this on 8-track. Played it to death in my old VW Beetle in 1980. RIP Neil Peart.
Awesome 😎
We play this in a 73 bug now....
I have never known a world where Rush did not exist, and for this I am thankful 🙏🏻
❤
Not a fair fight. Spirit of Radio, Freewill, Jacob’s Ladder, Natural Science. Amazing Record. And wait! There’s more. Wait, wait, then, there’s all the other records.
Reminds me of the commercials lol 🤣
Absofuckinlutely!!
Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet
THE most original sounding band of all time. I cant think of one band that sound even remotely close to them. Blessed to have seen them in 2003. Thanks for all the memories Getty, Alex, and Neil!
Yes. Lol
This song is one of many that has made Rush my favorite band throughout the years. Alex, Neil, and Geddy are the best musicians of all time.
We have to believe in free will: we have no other choice.
That’s awesome. 💋❤️🍎🎼🍺🥃🌿🥁🎸
The pictures are moving but the waves are permanent.
Rush= intelligent rock

They never got the credit they deserved! Truly an awesome band : )

@@littlenige This was honestly not widely agreed on until after Beyond The Lighted Stage came out, I've noticed public perception over the last decade has shifted big time, especially since Neil died. Back then I used to have to defend them constantly, these days I never run in to someone that doesn't at least respect their musicianship.
"There are those who think that life
Has nothing left to chance
With a host of holy horrors
To direct our aimless dance
A planet of playthings
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
“The stars aren’t aligned -
Or the gods are malign”
Blame is better to give than receive
You can choose a ready guide
In some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide
You still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears
And kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that’s clear
I will choose free will.
There are those who think that
They were dealt a losing hand
The cards were stacked against them
They weren’t born in Lotus-Land.
All pre-ordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate
Kicked in the face
You can’t pray for a place
In Heaven’s unearthly estate
Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt
That’s far too fleet…"
Thanks! We used to play this in my band. Rush was one of my favorites.

Words of wisdom in rock.
Mr Lifeson delivers one of his most powerful solos that to this day still gives me goose bumps!
The most excellent lyrics as in all Rush songs. Long live the permanent waves of Rush. Much love to you all 💜
Neil is an inspiration. A high school dropout who got his start beating on desks.
One of my favorite songs of all time. One of my favorite bands of all time. This music feels like home. Thank you.
Guitar in this song gives me raging goosebumps.

Best Canadian rock band of all time.

THE BEST rock band of all time. #NerdProgRockMetal or something like that. #RUSH #RIPNeilPeart #RushIsTheirOwnGenre
Rush is the worlds greatest band of all-time! No disrespect intended but IMO Rush surpasses them all!
@Thomas I would add Pink Floyd, and Yes to this list.
Rush was my fist live concert, Dad took me for my 10th birthday. Snakes and Arrows Tour, Salt Lake City. This song man!
Me too, my man! Except I was at the Regina, Saskatchewan date. A classic show I didn't fully appreciate until much later.
I always enjoy hearing stories like this. So remember, pass it on to your kids. And cherish their reaction.
I don’t always listen to Rush, but when I do, so does the entire neighborhood.
Right on, man.
I'm with you!
Cheers
I'm at work and everyone in the building's listening to Rush...at the same time as whatever crap they're listening to.
That’s the way it’s supposed to be
They are the most interesting band in the world!😁
I knew the first Rush album when I was 17 ('75) and I stuck with Rush and grew up with their albums and learned them as much as I could BUT I still want to learn more about their magic now. They are incredible artists and creators.
Rush Freewill is a legend! 🙌
So few have ever been so intelligent in their lyrics without being terrible. These guys always did so with poise and grace while taking music and effects to a new level without sacrificing quality or the original message.
agreed. genius! next level lyrics and music.
That was Beautifully stated....❤
It's unbelievable how EVERYTIME and ALWAYS this song puts me on a good mood.
Rush rules and always will!
Yes!
My girlfriend literally broke up with me and Rush was like “it’s okay, permanent waves is 40 years old now, have this”

Katie, you chose wisely. If they can't even vaguely comprehend how good RUSH are they are musically challenged. Of course, they may have other great qualities, so, as it always was, it's up to you. 😎

@Buddy Life 😆 🤣 😂
I will eternally give thanks to the music gods that brought these three talents (Lee, Lifeson, Peart) together to bring us so much joy, warmth, and entertainment. I am forever grateful. 🙏
To the best of my knowledge, the only band ever to incorporate the philosophy of Jean-Paul Satre into their lyrics.
Fortunately, it was Ayn Rand, not Sartre.
This honestly might be my favorite Rush song
It's awesome and you have great taste
You honestly might be my favourite person.

Lifeson's solo alone is crazy amazing. Add in Geddy with his growling bass, Peart doing Peart and you get a total transcendental experience. That's Rush.
I dedicate this song to the Class of 1980!! Marywood Highschool. Tomorrow is the 44th anniversary of my Highschool graduation May 25th, 1980. I was 17 and now at 61 didn't know what the hell I was in store for!! 😮😮😂😂❤❤❤
still my all time fave rush album!
They say your first rush album is your favorite. If so, it is thus this one for me.
Sometimes little things like spending 10 bucks for a cd on a rainy road trip at an Ohio truck stop are life changing.
Love The Message of this Song)))
Best band 100% believe this
The best biggest band in the universe and my heart... even if they are only three.
@ShallexYou're right on record sales. There are other metrics to form opinion on who's "best". Like musician ability/virtuosity, lyrical quality (intellectually speaking), number of albums recorded and dedication to live touring aspect of the band.
They're the best!Only 3 but sounds like 6!
RUSH ROCKS FOREVER!

simply put, not deciding is a kind of passive aggressive decision making
With a mum into Fleetwood Mac & a dad into Pink Floyd, Dio & Sabbath... How have I NEVER heard a Rush track?!?!?! Better late than never I guess 🤷
The jam towards the end is definitely one of my favorites! All three are just plain gettin it.
My 2nd favorite rush song ❤
Geddy Lee absolutely tore it up when he sang this song. Masterful.
No one touches the greatness of these guys
When I choose RUSH so do my neighbors!

We actually cracked the foundation of my bosses house.... RUSH ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When RUSH plays.......everybody listens.
Whaat'll they say back? You have chosen Freewill!
Rush is magic. The best.
This song always takes me back to sitting in the backseat of my Grandma's car! It had a grip on me instantly!! It was one of those songs that just seemed to captivate me yet I didn't really understand the lyrics at the time. All I knew was I loved this song and the line "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice" just stuck with me. Thank you Rush for such incredible music!!!! I get the feeling we all know the exact moment when we became fans and this song was it for me. To be a kid again roaming Pensacola Florida!!! Thanks Rush for the soundtrack to those days!
Anyone else out there know this song word for word? I will choose a path that's clear, I will choose free will. Such awesome lyrics!
This song changed my life. I was 16, I was literally red pilled seeing them live opening for Judas Priest. I was like 15 feet from the stage. Just blown away. Love them so much.
Holy shit they opened for Priest???
I would never know there were ever a opening band
That’s all well and good…..
But what about the “red pills?” Nevermind… I think I’m familiar

Simply an other masterpiece from Rush.
Hi I Recommend a song called 'The Bond Villain' by Robert Nix
Thank God
He has given us freewill
Just Divine
This song just never ceases to make the hair on my arms stand up. At the break when Neil is playing alone and Geddy pops in with that crazy bass line, you know it's about to get real. Then Alex kicks the door open with his amazing solo while Neil and Geddy are pretty much playing their own solos. Subconsciously, you almost stop breathing because there's so much going on, and they're all going off in different directions that it feels like barely controlled chaos. Just when you think it's all too much, they bring it all back to where they left off, and you can finally breathe again. These guys were, and are, nothing short of magical. Anyone who thinks otherwise is too busy listening to their own farts because they have their head up their ass.
Ahaha I love this comment. That solo is mesmerising, I can't even control myself air drumming, playing fake bass and fake guitar. Best musical moment ever for me
Listening to these rock prophets for 44 years and counting hope to hear them 4 ever❤️
This is what I want to hear every morning
I like calling this the “Humanist Theme Song”.
Also, Geddy’s bass playing just *slaps* in this song!

Cant get that bass outta my head God I love Rush
God rush was so ahead of their time. Jammin on my baaaassss
Good-bye Niel old companion
When life was dark you were my champion
Your creativity, my stability
An inspiration to a nation
Of geeks, nerds and never cools
And wide eyed music loving fools. 😥
The beginning is the best part
Love Rush they are Great ❤️ Geddy Lee's voice is great 👍 love the bass playing also ❤️
To this day I'm still blown away that only three guys can crank out so much sound! Master at their craft, indeed! 😎👌
They were the epitome of ability and autodidactism. None of them had the benefits of a formal musical education, but constantly built upon their knowledge by seeking out more information, and using the raw ability that they were born with. What came out of this was pure magic. Alex used to say "individually, we're an ass, but together we are a genius." Actually, I think they were all individually geniuses, but they became something beyond that when they worked together. We're diminished by the loss of Neil, and the retirement of Alex and Geddy, but their work lives on every time someone plays it. They're a musical collaboration of incredible consequence.
Awesome song 🤗💋🎤🎶
