‘Permanent Waves’, Rush’s seventh studio album, was originally released in January 1980, and its forward-thinking music signaled a new direction for the Canadian band as it entered a new decade. The six songs encompassing the album encapsulated the breadth of Rush’s formidable progressive chops meshed with its knack for creating radio-friendly arrangements, all elements that were embedded within the grooves of their previous album, 1978’s widely acclaimed Hemispheres. ‘Permanent Waves’ also signified Rush’s first of many recording sessions at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, which was at one point nicknamed the trio’s own personal Abbey Road recording studio.

Billy Corgan's story about trying to get his mother to listen to the lyrics of this song in beyond the lighted stage was a touching moment in the film..
A shame Billy didn't know how to pronounce the song title...
Billy a Chicago Boy !!!
That's funny. I played this for my mom a few years ago, and I remember her saying that she never payed much attention to the lyrics in "that kind of song" - I guess she meant rock music - but that she liked this one.
@@JasonUmbrellabird Entray Nous 😅😂
@@bassiejazz we'll have the entrée.
It's just as much about lovers trying to understand each other as it is about contentious relationships between humans in struggles with one another. Neil knew the score...
You're a very good faced human. Well done, individual.
Actually I think the song as a double meaning and this one talks about the relationship between Quebec and the rest of Canada. The thing was recorded in Quebec, the title is in French for no reasons and it was just before the first referendum. The lyrics match perfectly with the relationship between those 2
Yeah brother.
Each one’s life a novel no one else has read. Seriously who can write lyrics like that. RIP Neal. That was truly amazing.
Simply, one of the most perfect songs created.
Im thinking the same thing. And so unique. Doubling its value.
It really is right on the money
We are secrets to each other
Each one's life a novel
No-one else has read
Even joined in bonds of love
We're linked to one another
By such slender threads
We are planets to each other
Drifting in our orbits
To a brief eclipse
Each of us a world apart
Alone and yet together
Like two passing ships
Just between us
I think it's time for us to recognize
The differences we sometimes feared to show
Just between us
I think it's time for us to realize
The spaces in between
Leave room
For you and I to grow
We are strangers to each other
Full of sliding panels
An illusion show
Acting well-rehearsed routines
Or playing from the heart?
It's hard for one to know
Just between us
I think it's time for us to recognize
The differences we sometimes feared to show
Just between us
I think it's time for us to realize
The spaces in between
Leave room
For you and I to grow
We are islands to each other
Building hopeful bridges
On a troubled sea
Some are burned or swept away
Some we would not choose
But we're not always free
Just between us
I think it's time for us to recognize
The differences we sometimes feared to show
Just between us
I think it's time for us to realize
The spaces in between
Leave room
For you and I to grow
Nice man. Thank you.
Awesome!!! Thank you brothaah.

lyrics that never get old🤘🏽🔥
Awesome!!
Madison Square Garden, 2007 was ELECTRIC while Dirk, Lerxt and Pratt played this beautiful song live. Those were the days!
They STILL are in these times!! Like most RUSH Disciples...our time with The Boys is Tattooed on our Souls like Family Forever! 👋
Always loved this song.. it never got enough credit.
I agree👍💯
Yeah
Absolutely. It appeals to us all and encapsulates human relationships in a universal and timeless message. Plus, it's got a fabulous groove! Love how the guitar doesn't take over for a traditional solo in the middle, too.
Along with Xanadu my favorite Rush song.
So True
everyone talks about moving pictures being the album that they first noticed Rush. For me it was Permanent Waves.
Miss you Professor
That makes 2 of us!!!!!!
Me too
My all time favourite Rush song and likely one of the most underrated. RIP Neil
It's really a transformational song.
100% agree - #1 all-time favorite in the Rush catalog. The agreement between bass and guitar In the verse section is breathtaking. Oh and then, there’s the lyrical beauty…what can you say?
Heard this on @SiriusXm on Classic Rewind. About drove the car off the road. I'm so used to hearing the same Rush songs on the radio. This song and dozens of others deserve a new life in 2024.
Just dropping in to say 👋 and say that this song is INCREDIBLE - Long Live Rush. RIP Neil ✌️
This is definitely one of Rush's best songs. The lyrics are simply amazing.
Permanent Waves opened the door for Rush's mainstream exposure
The way the guitar changes from almost a pick to echo enhanced crescendo is masterful.....brilliantly constructed song.
You can hear the 72 jazz bass make its first ever RUSH appearances on this one and The Spirit If Radio
Somehow Geddy seems to forget this detail, for he credits Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Linelight, and Witch Hunt as being the first times using the ‘72 on record
its magical how they tapped into the 369 frequencies while teaching the brotherhood through the lyrics yeah
Yes, Alex playing his incredible chords in arpeggio in the 2nd verse reveals their how gorgeous they are.
Rush is the best band ever
Agreed😎
Yes.
Yes the Best
one of my many favorites
Yep!
Simply beautiful 😍
My favorite Rush song by far.❤
Just between us it still hurts like it was yesterday
Yes..being sixteen at the time i wish i could go back and do better.
Yes. You're definitely not alone on that one. 💔
Been a huge Rush fan the past 40 years when this album came out. Timeless album that sounds like it could be released today
May 16, 1980 Providence Civic Center,RI.........changed my life. Rush became everything to me. This is still my favorite Rush song. Miss you Professor......
The spaces in between leave room for you and I to grow. That's Damn Right!
thank you Rush
thank you for making such great music
RIP Mr. Niel Peart
you are missed 😢
One of my top 10 from them. Melodic and heavy at the same time. Just pure 1980 Rush
ENTRE NOUS A TRUE WORK OF ART IN A CATALOG THAT SPANS DECADES
Very underrated song
Very underrated!!!
That is really sad because this band was really talented and it was all coming from just 3 guys! 💥💗✨
It makes me so sad to think of Neil. This is a great song.
Ya - it does. I mean DAMN He was only like 68 or 69 and all of the Rush songs are great. Also, Neil Peart was the best drummer EVER !!!!!
He made Jon Bonham look like a beginner!!!
Sad? Leaving this legacy makes you sad? And nah, he's not "gone". There is no death, my friend, only another drum solo, he's in the permanent waves, endless and cosmic. Don't be sad, rejoice! ❤️ ☀️ 💐
@@kallentornadohunter0064 don't forget also brilliant Lyricist
@@AcesH1gh THIS! All of this. Well said. We were all lucky enough, blessed to get to have Neil for that space in time. So you're right, it's how we have to look at it now. 🤔 👍
We get it bozo, Neil's dead. But yeah, this song is hella underrated, wish it had more attention from RUSH's fanbase.
This album has Neil's best lyric writing. This song most of all.
Impressed with the remaster for this 40th reissue. Alex's guitars sound absolutely beautiful.
Yes and those 3 chords during the verses are brilliant
It’s too dark
@@zachsmith3 Pearts lyrics could reflect the grim aspects of life. He was probably not the easiest guy to be around!

Happy 2024 Entre Nous!
Really love this song
This was one of the most heartfelt songs among a deeply felt demographic (late teens) around that time. Entre Nous just *spoke* volumes to much of them/us. Guess what? It still does!
Just heard it on XM radio for the first time. Awesome
💚🦋
Just lovely.
The perfect lyrics - true love knows no time nor space
Well said. ❤️
Words can't express how much I love this song! RUSH FOREVER 🩵💫🫶
Rush honestly has the best LOVE songs between this and ghosts of a chance
Best Lyrics. .
2:35 Best Jam
As much of an amazing drummer Neil was, his talent with lyrics was equally as amazing. When most bands were singing of chicks, drugs, booze, etc., Neil was so beyond all of that. Even if you don't like Rush music (that's not me), reading the lyrics is like genius poetry!
THE PROFESSOR
The song just as fresh and vibrant as the first time I heard it.
There's something about permanent waves that just has this bright open, optimistic feel to it
One of my favorite Rush tunes. Permanent Waves was the beginning of the trio of their best work, IMHO.
Leaving the fantasy lyrics behind really propelled the band to a much more mature sound.
Rush was my first concert, at Lakeland Civic Center in 1982... always have been amazed by them. Saw them a couple times after that, but I've been fortunate to see so many incredible bands live, broad range of musical taste. Point being, this is one of the most incredibly technical songs I have ever heard. It's beautifully written, although the chord progressions and beat changes pretty much makes this one of the greatest pieces of music I've ever listened to. RIP Neal... Musically there is so much going on in this song, 2021 and still so amazed still. Ultimate power trio, timeless
So great LONG LIVE RUSH
Great keyboard synth solo. Spare yet sustained like a major key "Welcome to the Machine." Geddy, in addition to being the apex rock bassist, is also one of the masters of the Minimoog, whether he chooses to accept it or not. :-)
So many memories from this majestic masterpiece 🏆❤️🏆
Despite how cliché it is, I adore that opening riff. And the synth just takes it to another level of awesome.
Always room for lydian mode
FAVORITE BAND EVER AND EVER,SINCE 1977, BROTHERS AND HEROES
One of the best. Can just leave it on repeat. Such a great groove.....
That's awesome! Music brings joy! ❤🥰🎶😊
Listen to hemispher some time it's just as beautiful
The spaces in between leave us room to grow .
Beautiful lyric. Brings me to tears.
These are some weird ass chords, man. I love it.
Also such incredible poetry❤😊
The spaces inbetween leave room for you and I to grow, a lyric that has stayed with me RIP Neil
Insanely great music as well as lyrics... Rush just kicking ass on this song as well as the whole album...

Greatest. Band. Of all time.
Is The Who. Just ask Geddy and Alex.
I was 17 when I got that album. Daily, I listened it. I confess on that time I didn't understand the meaning of such lirycs but I truly loved it.
“ Thinking Man’s Music” Enter Rush.
Amazing !
And even still. Always takes me back. 💔
Made to be played on repeat.
Such a lovely contributor.💙🙏🏻✌️🌻🦋
One of the best lyrics about relationships and love. So deep and so true!
Just cried to this
very nice piece with a bit of nostalgia !
So many beautiful lyrics from the drummer/poet. I'm in my first car listening on 8-track right now. Oh wow....
Fantastic song 🎵 💗🌟
Takes me right back to sittin in my room with this album and headphones on. :
My first “us” song ❤️❤️❤️
Love remains.
Oof good call. How painful to think of that song
This song is amazing. One of my favorites. We all miss ya down on this plane Neil.
This should have been a hit, melodic, catchy and meaningful. Alex Lifeson shines!
❤️all Rush albums it I finally came around to realize PW is the only 10 . Lots of 9s
and never forget the bassist!
I remember blasting this on an 8 track on one of those huge stereos built into the wooden cabinet. It was a piece of furniture that was also a stereo system. Good times!
My Mom is 89 years old and still has one!! The turntable is shot but the radio and 8 track still freaking work!! I am 60 years old and saw RUSH on the Moving Pictures tour in New Orleans. I was so blown away! What a show, what a memory. Thank you gentlemen for everything you gave us with your passion, your love, your music!

its not just a love song
its about EVERYBODY
the whole human race
every relationship
individually and the whole damn human race altogether
how timely it is in the age of "social distancing"
I thought it was about Neil's relationship with fans.
@rockhard So true
I think it’s about the Relationship between Quebec and the rest of Canada, y’know the title is in French for no apparent reason and this was just before the first referendum
One of the first songs my guitar teacher gave me to learn (already been playing a few years before this) great tune 🎵
Takes me back to 1980 I was 13 year's old been a fan since then thanks to a dear friend Andy!🎸🎸🎸🤘🤘🤘
