So, what's the deal with the neck "biting"? In the video, Mason is very relaxed, sleepy, and feeling snuggly. You can tell because of the enthusiastic biscuits he's making on Puck, as well as the purring. He then escalates his behavior by appearing to bite her throat and hold on. It can look scary when you're watching on the livestream, but he's actually just putting his teeth on her and holding her in place. In his case, it is never an act of aggression. In this case, it is an expression of his feelings of comfort and affection.
It is similar to Nel comfort nursing on her pacifier. My other cats do it all the time to each other - snuggle, put their teeth on each other, groom each other, and sometimes that progresses to play fighting. Cassidy the #MiracleKitten will bite my neck when he's really into his biscuit-making. We've seen almost all of our mama cats do this to their kittens once the kittens get older and the moms want to start playing with them.
We also see it when kittens get overly exuberant with their moms, and the moms want to teach them to behave. Mason has done this too, which is great since the kittens don't have a mom to teach them proper kitten manners. :)
So, rest assured we are observing Mason closely and he is not doing anything concerning. He is not being aggressive, and is actually helping with the kittens' socialization.
All of that said, he is supervised when he has play time with the kittens, because he is so much bigger than they are and gets SO excited. :D
It is important to note that in some cases, neck/throat biting IS a sign of aggression and/or dominance. If this is happening with your cats, it is important to monitor them closely and observe their behavior to try to understand what is motivating it. Take videos when it happens, and document what each cat was doing leading up to the incident. Bring this to your vet to help them come up with a plan to address any inappropriate or potentially harmful behavior.

The Mason videos are the best. To see a cat who lived his whole life as a feral now be a tender, loving grandfather figure to foster kittens is incredibly heartwarming. However much time he has left, I hope it will be long enough to make up for whatever love he missed out on during his years as a feral.

Mason is such a sweetheart with his grandkittens. Who would have thought that this old warrior would have such a soft spot in his heart. I only wish life had been kinder to him. Bless you all for filling his last months with love.

These little babies are doing so much for him. It would surprise me if he outlasts the expiration date the Vets gave him. He's so happy now, he won't want to leave. I am holding out for a miracle.
Mason DID outlive his expiration date... they projected three months, and he lived three years. So glad!
The best part of this is when Shelly touches him. No negative reaction at all! He stays totally relaxed while she rubs his head! It's amazing how far he's come! 😸

Grandpa Mason is such a gooey melt when it comes to his grandkittens. Adorable. I just loved the last scene where it was sleepy time and the little white kitten wanted to be next Gramps. Just so fascinating to watch the shear love and affection Mason dishes out and the love he gets back from the kids.
I noticed that Mason is also kissing Puck the kitten! He's so sweet! Nice kitty, Mason!! He has kitty kisses for Puck!! 😊😊🤗🤗🤗
Puck certainly doesn't seem in the least alarmed. Kittens are not hesitant about letting the world know if they object to how they are being treated. As someone else pointed out, when Shelly intervened when Mason seems a bit too lost in the moment, Mason didn't seem to mind even though Shelly touched him. If he had been angry/aggressive, he wouldn't have cooled down that quickly. However, since there is a size disparity between Mason and the kittens and an even larger size disparity, I'm sure Shelly will always make sure that the kittens' interactions with any of the older cats are supervised.
I am so happy of every minute I can see grandpa mason, so much thanks that you gave him this wonderful evening of his life and gave us the opportunity to see him cuddling with the youngsters.

I miss a big old kitty purring and licking my face. People say cats show no love but it's just not true. You have to be paying attention. Bonding with one is really special.
I have a former feral cat, Boxer. He earned his name. He sits on his hind legs and boxes you. I caught him with the intent to TNR him, but I lost the R somewhere along the way.He has since become an indoor lap kitty and my "greeter" to any new feral kitties. He takes them under his wing and shows them hos to house cats in a house full of cats. He becomes their friend, and they love him. 3 years later, he is the most tolerant and friendly kitty I know. Still wants to go outside, though!

This is a little old man who was abandoned way too young from his mom and is now making up for it with these kittens.. His biting and padding is what he would have done as a kitten but had no one to look after him.. Glad he is safe in his final period of life..

it's seems the big tough tom cat has a heart of cream of wheat. this videos makes a cat lovers day. i have a feral cat who did'nt like the new kittehs until it got cold and he came in the live with us for the winter. he now spends most of his time with Puck(the 2nd) hunting, playing, and just hanging out. he's o.k. with Peasblossom( my Shakepeare phase) and is a happy loveable blue eyed pain in the butt(and which cat is'nt-that's part of the charm). but grandpa here is a very special cat. thank you for loving him.

My adult, male cat, Kieran, was always fascinated with the three foster kittens I had. And they were equally fascinated with him. it was his presence in the room, that enticed the kittens out of hiding. I always stayed in the room, monitoring their interactions. Kieran wasn’t aggressive, but he could get a little over enthusiastic when playing with them so I had to remind him to be gentle.

What a purr Mason has! The neck biting might be leftover mating behavior. You did a good thing, taking him into your home. And letting him help raise the kits!
gilamon55 I was wondering if anyone was going to bring that up. It could make sense in a cat that wasn't neutered until later in life, it doesn't make sense if they are fixed really early on... but I have seen this behavior in some of mine while playing, trying to figure out the motivation of this move in cats that never experienced mating or being around cats in heat.
Wonderful purring and beautiful tabby cats , I sincerely hope that Mason's kidneys keep going and he gets to enjoy more of this life

My cat used to bite my neck like that. Sometimes she would latch down on my chin and not let go. I had to force her jaws open. Though painful, she meant it as an act of love, purring and needing as she did it.
Mason's got the best purr ever. I cranked up my speakers and enjoyed it.

Kinda surprised how good the old man is with the kittens.
He was just overcome with love. He's so happy, being in the life he has now. And sometimes the feelings are overwhelming. He apologized to the kitten by licking the bite, which he realized, thanks to the human, was just a little too rough.
