The REAL Reason Why SKINNY Is Back! Understanding Beauty Standards

  • ☀️ Hey there! In this video i dive deep into why beauty standards change so fast and frequently.
I look back at the past and draw parallels with the present time and talk about movements that shaped modern day trends.
I explain that the reason why everyone wants to be skinny now is because they are sick of the BBL aesthetic and body positivity movements and currently consider thinness as aspirational and rare.
Ultimately I draw the conclusion that there is no such one thing that is beautiful, beauty is subjective and trends will forever come and go. The pendulum continuously moves from end to the other.
This video touches on subjects like modelling standards, capatalism, world building by brands, and public demand and how it affects what we see in the media.
I hope after watching this you have gained an insight and feel less pressure to commit to one or the other standard and understand why they are not meant to be taken seriously.
And that if a person wants to gain or lose weight there is nothing wrong with it as long as they do it in the healthiest possible way, that’s best for their optimal health.

I explain to my students that beauty is “that which is rare,” so when X becomes commonplace, the opposite may become the ideal.
EDIT: It never occurred to me that I would have to explain that of course genetic diseases being rare does not make them "beautiful" but here we are. I'm talking about things like lighter skin in times of farming (when more people would tan), chubby bodies in times of famine, slim bodies in times of plenty, etc. All of this is explained to my students but I didn't think it needed to be explained here, but I have people telling me I'm wrong because genetic disorders aren't "beauty". You guys, is nuance really lost? Are you really looking at the world through such a reductionist lens?

I’ve always wanted to be as thin as possible and had an ed in high school and was still not thin enough for me. I was extremely stressed and in a very abusive relationship a few years ago and could not gain weight for anything. I got down to 98 lbs at 5”6 and that was when I felt the prettiest which is absolutely insane!! I could barely lift my 8 month old baby! I finally am healthy again and back to feeling good and genuinely love my slightly squishy body. I fluctuate between 130/140 now. But sometimes I still get that feeling of damn I wish my old clothes fit me again and I miss my unhealthy body. Then I pick up my now 6 year old and remind myself I couldn’t do that with that unhealthy body

Why can’t we be just neutral and find beauty in everything? I am grateful everyday to have discovered hip hop magazines as a teenager, and finding out bodies that resembled mine being praised. Learning that bodies come in different shapes and forms and each of them can be represented and celebrated beautifully. Unfortunately that’s something brands don’t want to do because they need to sell to us white people with our skinny beauty standards. So sad.

Also ppl used to eat better quality foods & were physically active a lot more as they had to walk or ride bikes etc no ubers etc less cars or public transport, had to exercise or they did more labour intensive jobs and rec activities, instead of being on phones, laptops, tablets, TV etc, so their weight was generally more on the slimmer side. Their diet & exercise was much healthier. My 1st trip to the USA In 1996, shocked me, portion sizes of meals were mind blowing to me & I'd be constantly asked if I wanted fries with my meal, or would just come with the meal regardless, & the upsizing of meals that really shocked me. So it doesn't surprise me that ppl were thinner even prior to 1900's.

    • @TinyMK1
      @TinyMK1 Před měsícem +1

A size six back then though was more like a two now (if not a zero). The US is the only country I’m aware of that does vanity sizing. Women from foreign countries such as the UK, France, Italy, Australia, that aren’t very familiar with our country, get extremely confused when they come over here and shop.
      In the UK, a 6 is a US2 (or 0), an 8 is a US4, a 10 is a US6. Look at Australian fashion boutique label Alice McCall. If you want the equivalent of a 0, it’s an AU4, a 2 is an AU6, a 4 is an AU8, and so on.
Although for those who don’t shop foreign brands/lesser-known brands, Topshop and H&M both size differently than American created brands (since they were started in the UK and Sweden, respectively).

I used to cry bc my collar bone
was so scrawny (& yet many
ppl diet - hard! To get that!)
If you eat healthily & don't starve
to get that look don't worry.
By twenty to thirty you will
      gain a smidgen of weight
      - but hopefully you will stay
lucky & be lithe & slender
(& all those curvy girls at school
Who are curvy & were at fifteen
tend to struggle with their "too much" Weight - & hopefully you
won't have to worry about that
      until you go through menopause
      - when most ppl struggle apparently! (However at sixty ish
      you become more slender again)
      Don't worry about it though.
Eat well no junk food or
      Sugary drinks - do Pilates
      or whatever suits you that
      Doesn't burn too many
      Calories (& make peace
      with yr shape ergo dress
to suit it.) & I didn't think so
      - but they'll tell you that if you
      are naturally thin/slender +
Healthy - there is no such
      thing as "Too thin"🙏🇬🇧

I'm in my mid 30s and i have the same issue. You and I are the same size and weight. Men hurt my self-esteem a lot by body shaming me and making me feel completely sexually objectified. Women hurt my self-esteem by saying cruel things to me and acting like bc I wasn't as curvy as they are, that I was somehow less a woman and not capable of being sexy. It can be cruel out there... but the thing to always remember is that YOU have to know to love your own body. It is the only thing you come into the world with and leave with. It is the vessel of your soul, to experience LIFE. You are going to be inside your body for your whole life... the ppl who are hateful will not have to be and their feelings about things you cannot change (such as your body type) are irrelevant. Much love.

Ozempic doesn’t make you lose weight rapidly it just reduces your appetite, you still have to diet and make sure you don’t go over calories. Also you lose weight as fast as normal dieting. It just makes dieting easier is my point. That ALL it does to help you lose weight.

True, it definitely aids in weight loss by suppressing appetite and making you feel fuller. I think that’s the case with most weight loss drugs and supplements no?
That’s the part that makes it rapid because normally people wouldn’t have the will to restricts calories. It makes you feel fuller which makes you not want to eat as much. In turn, losing weight faster than usual.
The effects may vary person to person and may be faster for some depending on how hard they diet.

Personally if i think about the model to me it's sole purpose is to show the clothes so yes they need to be slender and tall the same if you want to be body builder need certain look and list goes on.
I personally never wanted unattainable things i know i can't be model because im not tall enough i don't have hour glass body more like inverted triangle.
However it is very big talent to make yourself look unique but also find style that fits your body and not follow what everyone else wearing how ever one thing is in human DNR to be attracted to health so i understand that for example overweight people wants to be included and all that jazz but they just not as attractive as what we see as normal the same with strange trends like bbl or plastic surgeries that seriously overdone.
Sure there will be always exceptions and people that find strange or over the top appealing but majority normal everyday people will not.
The other thing you can not compare yourself with celebrities because what you see does not mean that what it is behind closed doors can be entirely different world as we all seen.
As a human you should be good kind person love yourself and others respect your body and don't be an idiot.

While i think waif is hideous, slim and slender will ALWAYS be attractive. It is an evolutionary and ancestral male preference. Men are not typically attracted to a female who already looked pregnant, which would preclude the male from continuing his genetic line.

Marilyn Monroe was not that slim, yet a beauty icon, most males I agree, don't like very obese women, but most males do prefer women with curves & "meat on their bones", over the waif look. Not sure what sz you're referring to though, but I don't think it has anything to do with what you're referring to about men and being predisposed to liking thin women due to genetic lineage that you mentioned. But again I'm not sure what weight ranges you're referring to. But most males prefer some weight on them, they don't enjoy sex with waifs or Boney thin women. I've had many discussions with males on their preferences & almost all have discussed that they prefer women with weight & curves, not women who are seriously overweight but didn't mind if they had extra weight on them including the stomachs, so I'm not sure I agree with your theory. They like the feel of holding, cuddling, or having sex with a women who isn't just bones or whom they feel like they will break their bones. Their words, not mine and not in reference to me, just in general conversations on the topic. It's not to do with evolution, look at women from the renaissance period, they used muses who did have extra weight on the, who were voluptuous, that to males was beauty, so I'm unsure where your theory comes from? These days with all the body image stuff expecting women to be slim comes a lot from other women and what's shoved down our throats, by society if that's Evolution related again I disagree.

Please, let's not idolize Victoria's Secret models. It's well-known that these women undergo unhealthy regimes to achieve their runway looks. It's unhealthy for anyone to assume that everyone can attain such a physique, whether through starvation, extreme dieting, or surgery, as our bodies are built differently, and what may appear healthy for one person could be detrimental for another. We are incredibly diverse.
I'm also concerned about your goals. I hope you're pursuing them in a healthy manner to avoid the long-term effects that starvation can have on both our bodies and minds. Speaking from experience, it's important to remember that muscle mass adds significant weight. Furthermore, relying solely on the scale and BMI to gauge well-being and appearance isn't always reliable. They often limit our perceptions and can lead to dissatisfaction. Anyway, hope you are in happy place :)
