we are looking at it from a technical point of view, and in technical point of view he isnt hitting notes correctly, he is tensing his throat cause he is having a hard time maintaining the notes , and he is shouting too much which again is showing he is pushing really hard and uncomfortably to hit those notes which means his notes are not getting the correct support , all he had to do was practise this song longer cause potentially he could do it, and the issue with straining and tensing too much on the notes is that it loses its emotion and feel, its just noise and pitch , so it kind of totally kills the vibe of the song

I've listened to this song since I was 12, I'm 29 now, holy fuck this was a good cover. I think singer man nailed it (though he needs a haircut lol), lead guitar killed the solo(in a good way), and the rest of the boys were on point. I give this 11 out of 10 fuckyeahs

Idk why people hate on HLH so much. They're doing what they love, their lyrics are some of the most beautiful I've ever heard (imo) and they're obviously doing something right because they're signed and producing. For those complaining about his voice, listen to Hands Like Houses. His voice fits the genre so much more. Not to mention their originals are better songs. If like to hear everyone one of you sing so I can judge you so harshly as you have him.

for people talking about Trenton's vocals, i don;t think he ever had formal training from a coach to help him set it up and what not. I think his beautiful lyrics and clever lines make up for it in their own songs. A lot of the best singers you will ever hear had actually gotten formal training from a vocal coach and do a warm up every day before performance. some of them even since they were children. Trenton has it, it's just a technical thing with his muscles of his larynx... that's all. he has the passion and emotion and lyrical creativity.. he doesn't have much time to do it now cause he's already always touring and the muscle memory is already there. go listen to the lyrics in their songs, especially from ground dweller and unimagine. I think the "strain" has an emotional significance to it.
I just heard them live like 4 months ago. he was exactly the same live as he was in their actual stuff. granted I've never liked acoustic covers of songs that stay heavy. I love a good acoustic song when it is written for being that way. but turning a heavy song into a slow song just doesn't have the same feel. this is my favorite band of all time and his voice actually has been trained. he goes back to vocal training when he isn't touring. but he is talented live and if you like their albums they sound better in person than recorded.

Very powerfull voice, brings a lot of energy to this song. Unfortunately the instruments don't live up to the power of the voice. Would have brought in a telecaster with some chord progressions into the mix. Still, a solid performance.
I agree that the voice and instrumental were not really well balanced powerwise, but it got a bit better after the beginning. I think though that I would have rather haved the singer calmed down a bit or be more varied with his energy. I felt like the instrumental had more of a build and climax than he did.
It did sound odd, but with that comment at the end.. trying to learn the song in a week.
Hard for anyone to match Gwen Stefani's energy and vocals, in this song especially.

I liked this cover, I know it's not your guys' best cover, I saw you guys that night at your show in Canberra. Poor Trent's voice was almost lost gone because of his cold, which by the sounds of it affected his voice that morning on triple j. The show was still amazing, you guys are one of my favourite bands! I see you every time you play a home show in Canberra 😊

How is the singer?
This was a pretty tall task. Gwen Stefani is hard to replicate.
Someone has a hard time with dynamics, the soft parts weren't soft, I'm pretty sure the chorus is in a lower key which is unfortunate but understandable considering how much strain he still has on some of the notes even when lowered
He's actually got a great voice. I just think it was a wrong fit for this song. I think he'd sound way better on a song like 'It's My Life', 'Hella Good' or 'Ex Girlfriend'.
