Pry the darkness from my eyes.
Divided, let the light seep in.
Trees devoid of branches, and hollow hives,
    Endless black and empty beds.
It's not the same, something's changed.
I never used to be able to see past the trees.
A thousand unfamiliars are lying thick on the air and I can't breathe.
Is our skin to keep the world out or our bodies in?
    This doesn't look like home.
Is our skin to keep the world out or our bodies in?
I'll tear apart the town then sleep, and sleep alone.
If I'm a flame, I'm a forest fire speaking savage tongues as I emerge from the hills.
I am an avalanche. I am unchained. I'm awoken. I'll unleash hell.
So I roar, pin back my ears, and stone by stone I'll tear it all apart.
I've lost faith, the forest's changed.
My stomach's empty I'm feeling faint.
I've lost heart, the forest's scarred.
I hear no birds, just tv's and cars.
I've lost sight, the forest's died.
The brambles are bare, and I'm hollow inside.
Each breath rattles like dice in my chest,
Each breath gambled, unwinding til death.

I seriously loved this video. The song, to me at least, is about feeling disconnected and completely disheartened with the way your life is going. About not seeing home in the place you're supposed to call home and an overwhelming despair that it won't get better. And honestly, who's to say someone outside of the norm depicted in videos (young persons) wouldn't feel that? I'm not a middle-aged mother but I can easily believe that doing the whole 9-5 to feed your kids and doing chores and paying bills and no longer LIVING would take it's toll. To the point where you want to scream and let the world collapse around you, if only for a moment. So I think this video did a beautiful job of expressing that frustration and sense of helplessness :)

Getting to that point requires you to make choices. If you aren't strong enough to stand by the choices you make than you really dont have a right to stand and shout about it. "I had a kid and responsibilities, WAHHHHAHA to a rock beat"
      Awaiting the flame wall.

underclocked I don't know, I think it's just part of the human condition to feel trapped sometimes. That's why this song is so great, because so many of us can connect to that feeling. And I don't think that somebody's emotions in regards to helplessness and being overwhelmed by it all should be dismissed for any reason, be it their age, race, gender, sexual orientation or choices.

+Krista Frazier In my perspective of that scene, it seems like the kids are needing their mom but she is choosing not to pay attention to them. I actually expected the kids to be the dancers behind the glass door but they didn't show themselves afterwards. But then again the dancers could be what the mom imagines herself looking like when she is dancing xD

A lot of kids are bitching about the video, then again they are kids. This video is actually meant to appeal to an older crowd. It's about basically looking back on your life and wanting so much more. 14 year old kids wouldn't understand it because they still have life ahead of them and so much more to see and dream about. She's looking back on her life and realizing there was so much more she could've done, but instead she became a stay-at-home mom. Sure she doesn't regret having her kids, or possibly marrying her husband, but she wishes she had accomplished more. Who knows, this may be in the future and she could have been a fan of HLH when she was younger and in our present, holding on to a band and a song that made her feel young and alive, and remembering what it was like to be young and be able to dream for so much more.

Nothing against you, you're right, but some kids have seen some things that they shouldn't have to at such a young age, so therefore they feel broken and hopeless already. I have. I had a rough childhood, it isn't much better now, and I continue to fight through it everyday. This comment wasn't made to make anyone pity me. All I'm saying is pain comes in many ages. And many children look to this song to make the best out of their situation. By the way; I'm fourteen.

    • @aaronsmith7143
      @aaronsmith7143 Před 4 lety

Honestly I expected the video to follow the bear displaced by a new neighborhood metaphor so this video just didn't hit the same way the song does as I listen to it. The song is definitely about anxiety and while I know songs aren't literal, it definitely paints the picture of an animal in the forest and was later on confirmed in a break down that it is indeed a metaphor used to describe anxiety through the eyes of a bear displaced by a new neighborhood built at the edge of his forest. I'm just kinda disappointed in the video more than anything. Though I am not the children you directed your viable synopsis at, I just figured I'd throw my 2 cents in.

Its the type of song that puts your entire life's situational struggles and unkempt feelings in the forefront without even conciously thinking of them. I think the Video may be a reference to one one of the illustrators from the book that gave it it's name, 'Tales of outer suburbia'. There's one image of two men sitting on what looks sort of like a ledge, captioned, 'How great it must have been long ago, when the world was still unknown'. I assume the boys are like this woman, i think she's sick of being trapped in the same routine, life has lost its edge, and she longs to be young and free again. But that's just my interpretation of it. :)

"This is a song about anxiety, built on the metaphor of a bear displaced by a town being built on the edge of his forest. It's the one song on the album that doesn't “resolve,” which for me is a representation of anxiety itself. It's an overwhelming feeling of helplessness that channels through nervousness, desperation, anger and numbness all at once, and usually very suddenly. I don't want to glorify a negative influence, and it's my hope that by writing this, I and others can actually better handle it through
    understanding."
The video captures the song perfectly. She's finding a release from her anxiety.

Whenever I meet someone into the same music as me I usually become friends with them and we talk about music and try to have jam sessions etc. But the online scene of music seems to be so mean. I'm not affected, but how can you be so rude to someone you haven't even met? You'd never do that in public...probably more of a coward in public so you are safe online to act like this: sad.

The girls dancing at the end is the women when she was younger. This song makes her feel young again and is used to escape from the daily grind of life. Great video.

The true beauty of art is that no two people will ever see the same thing in a work of art. I do agree, the video was kinda awkward, but you cannot be mad at them for trying something different. Better to have regrets about something you did, rather than having regrets about not doing it.

This was such a good music video, if only because of how memorable it was. I have a very diverse taste in music (and a head injury) I tend to forget artists names or songs after a couple months, but even almost a decade later, I still randomly come back with a "what was that song with the lady and the washing machine? that was a good one."

  • @levititus3946

My view on the video is that music can be used as an escape from your mundane life. This woman (portrayed as ordinary, in a de-saturated, plain home) just lets loose without regards and basically lets the music take her over. I think this video is amazing!

Holy shit, this video is pure gold. It's so meaningful and the creativity surpasses anything I've seen from this genre. It's a song so many people can relate to, which is why they used a middle aged woman and honestly she fits the video perfect. I'm actually blown away, especially when the kids come in, symbolizing how much she wants to break free and let go of everything, but can't because of her children. If the video looks funny or stupid to you, watch it again in 10 years and see how much you can relate. She's just doing what most of us keep inside. Bravo HLH, I can't believe you're actually on Rise.

IN MY OPINION: This song and music video are all about growing up, moving away and reminiscing about the past. I believe it's about the band and how much they have grown and how they are away from their homes and how much they have changed from the people they were before to the people they are now. I believe what the video is trying to convey is that we were all something, we all had our dreams, we all tried to be what we wanted to believe, but sometimes it doesn't turn out the way we want it to. It's a great song with a message so deep, it hurts my feels.

Wow man. They really had me with most of their last album. This Ain't No Place For Animals was a real comfort to me when I first heard it. They didn't disappoint me with this one. I feel like everyone who is commenting on this music video saying it makes no sense needs to take another look at the lyrics. This is one of the most moving music videos I have ever seen, and the low quality of it adds to the point the song is trying to make. The song is titled "A Tale of Outer Suburbia," and the music video is portraying a middle-aged woman whom we can infer lives in a suburban area. Basically the main point the video, lyrics, and title is that this is a middle-aged, "normal," suburban mother, who is tired of living the way she always has and longs for something more. Once you understand that concept the two boys makes sense, and the young girls dressed similar to her make sense as well. I think this music video is a brilliant piece of art.

If you don't understand the meaning of the song you're sure as hell not going to understand the meaning of the music video. I just love how they had a woman who doesn't look like a super model and doesn't sing perfect either. Makes me respect the band that much more!

I've been listening to you guys since before ground dweller, when you started releasing singles in the states. I've always found your music to be insightful and have so many layers of meaning, it's phenomenal. This video is amazing, possibly the best I've seen try to convey your deeper message. Really thumbs up, top knotch.
P.s. i showed it to my mom (I'm 32, she's 66) and near the end, she broke down in tears. Don't let the haters tell you the message gets lost in translation, they are illiterate and blind. It only took my mom one take to get it.
