2021 Harley-Davidson Low RIder S (FXLRS)│Test Ride and Review

  • The 2021 Low Rider S is back after it's debut in 2020, on the new Softail chassis. The Low Rider S is arguably the most popular cruiser within the Harley-Davidson lineup. This year the motorcycle comes back in mostly the same fashion. The barracuda silver has been subbed-out for a new paint color the Midnight Crimson. Matt and Nick from Laidlaw's Harley-Davidson go into the details of this bike and give some information to consider when comparing this bike to other H-D Models.

Thanks for the vid, it's always nice to see 'my' bike featured. I have a 2020 Lowrider S (in black) sitting in my UK dealer waiting my return to UK July this year. Meanwhile we're fitting the 131ci engine, heavy duty clutch, sundowner seat, pillion pegs and a few other cosmetic changes. Nice to see I'm not 'out of date' before I swing a leg over it. Not that that really matters, this bike is, for me, a 'lifer'.

Those new Softy Lows are the business and being an 02 Night Train owner it's so refreshing to hear that the new ST frame is the best handling frame to date after 20 plus years of Dyna Bros rubbing it in haha. @@GODSWORD11 To be honest, there are very few cons with the Fat Bob. Maybe the two things I'd mention if I'm getting picky, the stock tyres are not great and sometimes in a sharp corner it wants to stand up a little but not in a big way. The other thing which is a personal preference I'd prefer the speedo on the handle bars as opposed to the tank. These are small things and can be fixed if you really want to. @@jaredwehr1431 if you are going to put forward s on then it’s the probability buying the wrong bike as that setup negates the sporty capabilities ... I have a heritage OEM shock on mine and it raises the back of the bike maybe an inch...you steer the bike with your but cheeks as apposed to most other Harleys... it’s a great handling bike. I would recommend putting bung king highway crash bars instead if you are looking for that forward feel. It is more in keeping with the So Cal Club style bike that this bike is.

I bought a Low Rider S as my first bike so I'll answer honestly as I only ever rode 250cc bike in the MSF course. Is it possible for a beginner to ride this and be ok? Yes. Is it the most sensible? No. Ideally, I wanted to start on something smaller to increase my skill quickly and then upgrade, but the financial impact of that just makes it a pain in the ass, you'll essentially be losing out a few thousand when you trade the sportster back in for a FXLRS in 6 months. I just decided to risk it and i'm happy I did.
Matt and Nick are so experienced they probably don't know what trips up beginners with this so i'll say it: slow speed maneuvers. The first day I picked it up was 25 miles north of Austin, in the pissing rain, on roads I didn't know with no GPS. Definitely felt some adversity but the bike handled amazing and I made it home despite flooding conditions which is a riders nightmare. I learned the friction zone and throttle have to be mastered quickly. That might seem basic to people that have ridden before but a 250cc bike is 100 times more forgiving to clumsy inputs, something which new riders, including me will make. The FXLRS pulls like a train in 1st gear and a few times at the start it will pull you out of a lean and straighten you up easily running you wide, you have to beware with that. The clutch comes on strong at the end and so use smooth, light inputs with minimal throttle until you are used to how it takes off. I went to a parking lot with no one around and just rode around practicing the turns. The handling and the breaks are great, and at high speeds it feels like a dream. That said, you have to respect the machine, go easy and learn what its capable of because as well as learning the bike, you are learning situational awareness and the behavior of other riders on the road. Turns come up quick, cars behind you come up quick, gravel and inclines come up quick, and if you live in a 4 story parking lot you are going to need to learn the friction zone with rear break turning up inclines, then slowing the bike down enough on a turn coming back down. Just things you don't think about until you face them and being on a 650lb bike you can't muscle yourself out of a mistake like a light bike.
Overall, the bike is amazing and I would have bought one from these guys had I still been in LA, just be careful until you learn how to ride it. Don't bother with a sportster if you are willing to to be conservative, practice and ride outside of peak hours to get better. Put crash bars on to put your mind at ease.
Sorry for the long winded post but as someone who spent forever deciding on whether to get this bike as a newer rider I hope to help those that are feeling the same way.

Sir I have taken exception to your remarks about the 88 twin cam. At the time the 88 was a big step up from the EVO power. Now with a stage one and a good aftermarket exhaust power improves just like all Harleys. If you go to a stage 2 with a good cam the 88 tc steps up power to a very respectful level. If you go to a big bore kit 95 the twin cam becomes a beast. It's short stroke makes rpms much quicker. It almost turns the 88 twin cam into a drag racer. I like the M8 but of all the twin cam motors I like the 88 best bang for the buck.

You failed to mention a major reason a lot of us stick with the Dyna: the Twin Cam makes power differently than the Milwaukee 8. The Twin Cam makes more low end torque with more noise and rumble. It feels more like a Harley. So while the new softails perform slightly better, the Dynas still feel better.

Matt as a Retired Harley Dealer GM and a HUGE Fan of Harley, have owned over a dozen in my 54 years of riding , i couldn't disagree more, Harley's to even be mildly Average for some DOES require Upgrades, As a Past owner of an FXE, FXR,FXLR, and 2 FXDC's they all needed minimum stage 1 upgrades and dyna's needed progressive shock and spring upgrades, and my wife like to ride with my if i was to buy the Low Rider S at $17000 i'd have to buy a seat, and passenger pegs to start, and the new Heritage softail OMG harley took away the Engine Guard and the sissybar that the bike came with for years, now you have to pay for them as an upgrade, i have long since thought harley should knock down the models to 4-5 and then offer options like the auto industry does with a base model, then a S model with a minimum of upgrades, then an SV with more options, and the SR with top of the line, and finally the CVO at the Custom model of the 4 or 5

Not many people talk about the sport glide I believe it's one of the most versatile bikes imo. You can ride it with bags and fairing or strip it down in 2 mins and have that raw stripped down look. The sport glide should have had the 114 option though

Good informative video, a tad long but good. I think this bike would make an excellent platform for an updated FXDXT which was a real riders motorcycle for those that didn't want the heft a touring bike but still needed functionality. Also although the gauges look great on the tank mounting them behind the nacelle would really by much more functional and I think is one of the number one complaints of this bike. I also find it funny that this bike only has 30 degrees of cornering clearance meanwhile back in 2001 my FXDX had 34.5. The problem is what makes a good bike and a bike that sells are totally different. Since you seem really dedicated to the brand maybe you could pass some suggestions along to the higher ups. Thanks

Mike Laidlaw, I’m happy yoy keep trying to promote the Fatbob.
The Low Rider S is a sweet bike and rides dang good. But having also test rode a Fatbob, it haunts my dreams with how easy it is to tip into a turn, how the fat front tire gobbles the tar snakes and how intuitive it is to ride.
In my humble opinion, the Low Rider S is great, but the Fatbob is better and criminally under appreciated.

My advice... Sit on them all! Let the bike choose YOU!!!
AND THEN...do not buy any accessories for the first 500 or 1000 miles... Get to know your bike as is.
You will need at least 5k to truly break in and start feeling "one" with her

dyna Lowrider s had a 110 when standard was a 103, now today we have a 114 in a heritage and the Lowrider s model, what is the difference in motor if any of these new bikes? Personally Harley should have a larger displacement motor in this S model to continue with the performance influence of this model.

Dual ABS Disc brakes and Traction Control are pretty much standard on the vast majority of motorcycles (except Harley Davidson). A Sport Glide S (a Low Rider S with saddle bags and a low fairing) would make a lot of sense but have the gauges on the handle bars instead of the tank.

I'm 5'9" and I test drove a 20' Low Rider S last year and i liked the engine acceleration and nimble feel of the bike but felt very awkward and cramped with the seating position so if i end up picking one up I will definitely get front forward controls and raise the handle bars to feel better riding. I'm in between this and a Road King Special.

There are two HD's I'd have in the UK. The Lowrider S and the FatBob, both with forward pegs. This is a mixture of our narrow twisty roads suiting the steeper rake and my 6'5" (196cm) frame needing the leg room. I really love the idea of all that down low power though. Also that midnight crimson is stunning, the red Fatbob is nice but this is on another level.
