Let’s repeat to those that don’t understand why this year has been important to photography and why most videos are about gear and not the art for the moment. Yes, I do believe gear doesn’t matter when it come to creating art. But there is also the right tool for the right job. These announcements are important at because they will set up the future of photography in ways we have yet to see. Also, for the consumer these are exciting times to see more bang for the buck like cameras like the X-T3 and A7III. Competition is good. We can get back to the art of photography now that the dust has settled.
Camera companies are under pressure to release new models every 12 months just like we see with cellphones. The fact that Photokina will run annually will only make that pressure to bring new products even more likely. Don't me wrong, I enjoy new gear as much as the next person but thankfully I don't feel under pressure to run out and upgrade. I'm still a very long way from being a better photographer than my gear is capable of 😊
Im a Nikon hybrid shooter (buying a Z6) but I heard someone mention the queue at the Canon stand at photokina for the EOS R was by far the largest - so it may sell bucket loads.
Mark, I don't agreee with your premise that "Full Frame" has always been the standard. The first digital cameras were all APS-C. Canon, Nikon were both using APS-C. Nikon had a 1.5x crop and Canon had a 1.6x crop. I remember the Canon EOS 1D. It was a 4 megapixel pro camera that was based on the EOS 1 film body. It was a tank. The Nikon D-1x and D-1h were cropped cameras that were Nikon's solution. I remember when Nikon launched the D100. It was a 6 megapixel APS-C body. I was so excited about that camera. It was "affordable". I used Nikon for years up until my last two Nikon digital bodies, a D2x and a D200 both were APS-C 12 and 10 megapixels. My point is durring those years cameras were not FX or DX. They did start making DX lenses to deal with the crop factor. I had the 17-55 f/2.8 FX Nikor that was my go to lens for about 80% of my work with the D2x. I shot tons of weddings and portraits with those cameras. Due to a divorce I had to leave photography for a while. Having come back to it I didn't even really consider Nikon or Canon again. I am a Fuji fanboy now and have no regrets.
Never realized there was a huge market for overweight wedding couples, maybe I should get in on those Tonne weddings, does it require any special gear like a riding saddle, and harnesses or do you just bare back?? Also sorry to hear you had to get out of photography because you ex-wife didn't think it was appropriate for you to get your gear out all the time. Free Willy!! My apologies too many long hours, I get in humour mode.. No offence was meant, good post! Hopefully you are using medium format Fuji.. Sure hope your ex wife didn't crop you. You know what they say it might be a Hassal and Bad but once you get a medium format you will need a new high end back. My apologies again..
The Panny Full frame is going to be fine. Just let Sigma slap that L mount in to Sigma Art line lenses, Execpt if the screen not flippy like GH5 and the Auto focus still not improve.
we are pretty spoiled rotten now with the amount of features and technology we can get at a pretty reasonable price. ive been shooting since the 90s. it is an amazing time in the photography world.
Wish they would just release the new Sony APSC. Have a feeling it may have the new animal eye focus they demonstrated and silly autofocus. This might be the camera they aim to push for wildlife .
Besides the Leica Monochrom in digital, for me, as a Leica user, their camera's are for film, that is what I use. The rest is just too expensive IMO. But shooting film with a Leica M is something else........
Mark you have way to much energy to be waking up at the but crack of dawn.. LOL.. It normally takes me about 5 or 6 hours just to wake up each day.. LOL...
The market I believe is really coming from smartphone users. Yes the smartphone has but taken over lower point and shoot market. But at the same time is introducing more people to photography and videography. The economy is booming and believe it or not people really do have more money in their pockets. Once those smartphone users want that extra from their photo the look at a good camera.
Note: 35mm film isn’t the same as digital full frame. 35mm film is the width of the film, but the picture size recorded is 18mm x 21mm, typically. In other words the 35mm film was cropped. 🤭🤫 this is why in the digital world we refer to a 35mm sensor (not film) as “full frame”. Because unlike film, it uses all of its surface area. But Hollywood still prefers cropped sensors and 18mm x 21mm film. Sorry full frame fan boys, y’all are still not the norm. And I don’t see a $1000+ difference to spend more on a slightly bigger sensor. Give me my FujiFilm or any APS-C/Super 35mm any day!
Actually not much in Photokina this year. Fuji had an improved xt2 and a compact GFX, Nikon's reps were hiding behind a column to see if anyone would bother stealing the Zs, Canon posted a banner "Because old values matter", Hasselblad located Matt Granger and forced him to say a few things, Leica announced their new discovery, the CMOS sensor, and Sony announced they'll be working with Sauron Software, and Panasonic had to set up twice because the first time they brought their breadmakers and DVD players by mistake.
Just watched a interview with sony and now suspect it will be the other way around aps-c first because a7s3 is not ready or they want to push it a little further out and add some more stuff. Once they drop the a7s3 they want the others to be locked into their development cycle ... all based just on how the sony person answered so well thats not much to go on :)
I usually totally agree with you but to be honest if you compare to how Canon and Nikon dropped the ball. This alliance developed a much more promising product. Though maybe not the best product. Not mentioning Fujifilm's awesome X-T3. Which is my favorite this season.
First !, maybe because they all looked at the numbers and like sony noted : sony now FF (mirrorless and dslr) worldwide leader 1/2 2018. They all knew this for about 6 to 8 months and decided to move now, the flip happening was clear... Notice all kind of do the 2 camera + 1 later (sport) concept now. Panasonic announced only for over 6 months to be in the game. This may sound very pro sony but that kind of is what happened and now we will see what happens. I think it will be a battle between the sony/fuji/pana on one side and canon/nikon on the other.
I think Canon and Nikon are taking it seriously. I think these meh cameras they announced were just the first that were ready to ship and true flagship cameras are on the way. I don't think the Canon is a bad camera. I just think Canon fumbled the pricing.
If this was their best shot and don't cycle faster and this is it for next 2 or 3 years well. I think most now say 'they held back' in the hope they did and not because it was the best they could do on many aspects .. remember nobody is even talking about the sony a9 in the compares since well its just 'not fair' but that tech is being updates and coming down to the a7 line...
I agree... The body looks kinda ok and 300 dollars too pricy but, man, the new glass is really exciting! I may invest in this "first" iteration just to use the 50mm F1.2 and the 28-70mm F2.
Nikon did fucked up because both of their bodies (z6 and z7) are missing crucial features. Canon only released a mirrorless 6d and everybody knew they will cripple it. They always have. They don't want to sell a pro level body for only $2000. Next year they will bring out their mirrorless 5d equivalent with dual cards, joystick and less/no crop 4k (maybe IBIS) and RIP everybody. They did manage to make the most ergonomic, durable body and that's the most important thing for pros. Yeah it will be a ~$3500 for a proper pro Canon camera, but that is how it always have been and what 90% of pros that still shoot dslrs have no problem paying.
In my experience over the last couple of years I have spoken to sooooo many people who shoot with their mobiles but want something more. Most are aged 25-35 (maybe this is because I am 27 and my circle of friends are a similar age) seem to have a budget of GBP 500-1,000. I feel the rise of the smartphone has created a population more interested in photography. And, a side note, most of these people think that buying the camera is the hardest step, and do not consider the time investment required to learn how to use it. I'm tired, and maybe this was a load of inarticulate gobbledeegook but there you go, welcome to my stream of consciousness.
Where is Photo Tina I haven't seen her in a while on that Nikon dudes channel.. She showcasing her stuff again, interested in her new releases.. she releases anything it is sure to be hot... 😝 Good video as usual..
The bigger winner is again Sony because Sony is the only one who have a complete feeder ecosystem from RX100, RX 10, RX1, to A6xxx to A7 variants. Same ergonomics, same menus, and for the larger sensors even same battery. Canon still supplies a full range of machines, but their mount proliferation has killed the upgrade path across product lines. For an EOS M shooter to go into EOS R, he needs to start from the beginning, might as well jump to another brand. In contrast, Sony's APS-C lenses can be very useful on the A7 cameras if you take advantage of their super-35 4k video mode, which is garnering a lot of praise. It is a very cost effective 4k if you do not specifically need full frame image characteristics (thin DOF and low noise in low light) Panasonic now seems to have cut the upgrade path similarly to Canon. NIkon still does not have APS-C mirror-free cameras, but I predict when (not if) they release them, they will not be using Z mount. That is the liability of those huge mounts, they are way too big for APS-C, so APS-C lenses will need to be unnecessarily wide, at least at the base. Seems like the E mount is again a very appropriate compromise here. The most interesting camera announcement for me was the Sigma full frame Foveon camera with native SA-L and EOS-L adapters. Hopefully Sigma will have solved various ergonomic and software handicaps of the existing Foveon cameras.
well leica has a tl system (aps-c) which uses the L-mount. so technically they could do aps-c and full frame on the L-mount. i think thats why so many people are worried they might just drop m43 because l-mount can do aps-c and full-frame.
They're going for profit alone sometimes, just like the smartphone industry. Upgrade, release, repeat. More like new releases, the more people talking/reviewing about it, more people will buy. Just because all of the product is hyped by reviewers. lol
They are targeting youth and imaginative seasoned shooters, not the regular professionals, because the pros are still using the DSLRs.They might also be figuring they should target the second/third cameras. In other words,I can have my DSLR,my Hybrid, and bring them both to weddings and other events like that. That's why Panasonic made the SR with TWO CARD SLOTS,not that stupid, arrogant nonsense. We are great with good batteries,or a great battery grip,SD/XQD/CF dual card slots, and we are going to see a LOT of new storage tech.I also think those guys bragging about having 100 lenses in a system is going to be a total waste of time.People like to also shoot with multiple brands,so that stupid nonsense about some stupid brand loyalty will be a butt of jokes and those old dummies looking really pitiful. That thing with Leica,it's something I would get if I wa swealthy and just wanted to experience, just because, and from what I understand it's pretty solid, just way overpriced.
Me? I will stay M43. I need a small camera to backpack and bike with. Yes, there are limitations. I know them. But they are not then end of the world for me. I carry my M43 with me everyday I step outside. Lug my Canon? Nah. Wife loves the bling, but I do not want to carry all that gear anymore.
I legit enjoy your videos. Informative. Straight to the point. Well placed humor. And true to what works for you. Keep it up.
Let’s repeat to those that don’t understand why this year has been important to photography and why most videos are about gear and not the art for the moment. All that and more here on the morning jolt!
I have two systems, Panasonic GX85 for street and light travel, and GFX for the big picture
Love Morning Jolt Mark! You crack me up but you do give us stuff to think about.

Panasonic’s new system is going to be expensive to get into.
What is Sony going to do? Sony did the A7iii. They were the ones with the first move. That camera debuted April of this year.

"Dickslap right in the teeth!" OMG! 😂😂😂😂Some of the shit you say - pure gold!

Goddamn, son! Savage! 🤣👍
What do you think, will Sony release an aps-c or a full frame camera this year??
My gut says it’ll be the A7SIII first
The Photo/Video Show maybe they wait Panasonic for final specs
