Space Cadet Blender 2.8 Character Modeling Timelapse

  • In my spare time, I worked for some months on this personal 3D project "Space Cadet", based on a concept of Guillaume Singelin, a French comic artist who has a lot of inspiration from Manga artists like Akira Toriyama and Katsushiro Otomo. In this video, I put parts of the modeling process using Blender 2.82 and 2.90.

    I love the use of poly modeling throughout and only using sculpting where necessary. Much nicer than sculpting everything just to have to retopologize it. Great use of Multires too in that regard

    The fact that you modelled everything in position from the beginning is so impressive !

      @@MrCIown Thanks again mate. I'm not sure if I would do a good content for streaming. What would you like to see in a stream? And about an in-depth tutorial. I need to learn rigging and basic animation to make an attractive and rounded tutorial.

    Muchas gracias por tus vídeos son impresionantes. Ojalá saques un curso del proceso completo de algún elemento que no sea una bestialidad pero que se pueda apreciar desde el modelado, texturizado en substance y el render en cycles. Un saludo.

    Been obsessed with this piece piece a while. Is the lighting setup you use a plug in? I noticed warm, cool, neutral, etc in a collection.

      Como estas Seba!? En este caso solo exporté la malla con el modificador (no es necesario aplicar el modificador para que funcione).

    You mentioned in your article on the creation of this character that you keep all your UV rotated in the same direction, is there any specific reason for that?

      The main reason is that when you have a repeated directional pattern (like lines) on several UV isles, having the same direction avoids changing the direction of the pattern for each island when texturing.
      BTW this is not strictly necessary, it is just to make the texturing phase easier.

    For the hair strands how do you make them flatter after you bevel the curve?

      Use a Circle Curve to control the thickness. I made a guide about this. Check the link. The 2.4 is about this.

    I'm still confused how you made the mouth and all the creases/folds in the fabric without affecting the topology. How did you do it?

      Hi Bonapp! Use the Multiresolution modifier (instead of Subdivision) and sculpt the details, It's rather simple.

      @@aendom mind blown! So if I understand correctly you made 2 types of custom brushes: a few brushes for the creases in the coat & gloves and the other for the mouth.
      (I think that's why you were able to move a preview of the brushes)
      the other creases were made by sculpting all of which was made with the multires modifier on, right?

      @@bonapp3316 Yea, you are right. This was made just with two alphas, one for most of the creases of the cloth, and another for the mouth. And only sculpted the bag of the left. All of these meshes used multiresolution. (subdivision don't work for sculpting)

      Its just Trial and Error. If the textures look good, then it's good. For this project, I did not rigg nor animate. But the next character I will.
