  • Video of my crash at the TT Circuit of Assen. The rear wheel loses traction, skids, and then suddenly regains traction, creating a large torque which flips me head first off the bike and on the tarmac.

    11 yrs old footage found me. You can hear the throttle open at 1:57 while still leaned over. That is the real reason the rear tire lost grip.

    Thanks for sharing budd. Depending on you tire/ surface condition, you had too much gas. Early slide detection is the key... Hold the throttle and pick the bike up by pulling on the inside handle bar. This will bring the bike into the slide....it sound like crazy thing to do, especially if dont have much road on the outside but its one of the few means to recover from the slide.

    I did one of these last night on a cruiser. I took a corner too fast, tried to straighten out a bit and slow down. I obviously didn't' straight out enough and braked too much because I locked up the rear and fishtailed hard. high-siding me off the bike. we both slid a good 4 meters. I mostly landed on my hands and knees then belly slide to a stop. I had a helmet, jacket, gloves, boots and pants and they ALL got used. Be careful out there ride safe! Wear Gear!!

    • @nightman922

      Biggest thing is to not cut the throttle suddenly and/or to not stab the brakes. You need to accelerate through the turn while traveling in not such a sharp angle. Ride safe and keep wearing that gear

      +ally vega too much lean angle and bike power for the tires to remain stuck in 1:1 rate on the road
      solution is to lessen the lean angle, get a bike w/ less power or less throttle, get stickier tires or find another combination from those 3 important variables
      Safest way is to always be at a maximum of 80% maximum potential at all times then you can never bust anything. If you want more then you increase the maximum potential ceiling limit.

    at the precise moment when the rear tire started to slide,had you immediately shut the throtle, maybe it could have been avoided, am I right???

    • @slimmerik1
      @slimmerik1  Před 5 lety

      I don't think it is that simple. When you shut the throttle, the tire regains traction and that is exactly what happens in a highsider and flips you over de bike.

    • @alimertc
      @alimertc Před 4 lety

      @@slimmerik1 As he said, you should have shut down the throtle. You can see that rev is doubled because back tire lost traction. Then you cut down the throtle and it regained traction (rev decreases slowly) until it gained enough traction to throw you out.
      I don't think you could totally avoid accident by not shutting down the gas but maybe you would have had a smoother landing :)

No wrecks luckily. The engine exploded this past St. Patrick's Day and I just got my first street bike, an FZ10. Being that I've only ridden it a week, and my complete lack of experience on such a bike, what advice can you offer me to prevent high and low sides? I ride all year.

    • @michor10
      @michor10 Před 8 lety +4

      When the bike is leaned over that much the contact patch is tiny so your traction is very low to begin with. I don't think that anyone can really teach you how to save yourself from a highside but you can do things to avoid it. Like keep the bike as upright as possible. In a turn this is done by properly setting up your body in a correct manner (not twisted but parallel to the bike) BEFORE reaching the turn and before braking and develop good throttle control. Also look where you want to go and keep your arms soft on the bars. My own advice for riding the streets would be to ride at a level you feel comfortable with and always ride at a pace that will allow you to see far enough ahead to avoid mid-turn corrections. Never allow yourself to be cocky on a motorcycle, especially around friends. Also watch "Twist of the Wrist" or get the book by Keith Code. There are valuable lessons to learned there. Practice on streets that you know or if you're serious about riding, try to get some lessons on the track. Enjoy your ride!

    • @michor10
      @michor10 Před 8 lety +6

      Oh, I forgot to mention. The reason highsides happen is BECAUSE the rear tire REGAINS tracktion very quickly, ejecting the rider from the seat. So really, what you want is to bring the bike into a more upright position while keeping the throttle calm. A very difficult (if not impossible for most street riders) thing to do. It all happens so fast that all you can hope for is luck. Avoid leaning the bike far off on the street and learn proper body positioning to take the curve safely with the bike in a more upright position and with good throttle control before the curve, into the curve, and riding out of it.
