  • In yet another edition of Taryl's fuel additive experiment, Taryl goes over some comments recently brought to his attention made by another CZcamsr as well as attempts to start each engine yet again. Which ones will run? Which ones won't? What are your thoughts about fuel additives? Feel free to comment below and be sure to check out the other videos in the Fuel Additive Experiment playlist and check back for more regarding this test as well. And as always... It ain't the space shuttle, it's a lawn mower.

    I’ve learned 3 things about fuel watching Taryl’s videos:
    1) Buy ethanol-free fuel for your equipment (I have 2 gas stations that sell it locally).
    2) Make sure your gas cans seal properly.
    3) There is no advantage to using fuel stabilizers.
    And there’s your dinner!!!

    • @dkeith45
      @dkeith45 Před 3 lety +3

      The real test for the fuel stabilizers will be to see how long the gas in the sealed cans remains viable. I always treat the gas in my cans, and as every season ends, remove the gas from my machines, and make sure none is in the carb bowls either. Then add the stored gas the next season. HOw long will that work? I've heard two years, but?

    • @footfrek

    One thing i would be interested in seeing, on the engines that surge and run poorly, try some of the """fuel system cleaners"" like B-12chemtool, or Techron, Lucas or Gumout that you pour in the tank, and see if it will get the carburetor cleaned out or not.

      I worked in a carb rebuild shop, and after the degreasing tank my job was on the teardown bench. I could always tell when they had that stinking ass "Gumout"in 'em,I'd take the top off and get hit with the most god awful stench !!!!!!! I'd toss 'em outside for about an hour until they "aired out" !!!! All the rubber diaphragms,seat needles, were shot !!!!! They had to be run through the acid bath tanks before we could rebuild them !!!!!! Gumout is Garbage, don't use it!!!!!!!

    Thanks Taryl for all your hard work. Maybe the reason all the E10 engines needed additional choke to keep them running at startup was because there was water accumulation in the bottom of the fuel bowls. At startup the water was being sucked up with the fuel, so the engine needed more choke. Once the engine ran on all fuel, it would run with the choke completely off. And the VP didn't have that problem because it was non-ethanol fuel, so no water sitting in the bowl.

    Been following your videos. Very interesting and I'm glad someone took the time to do this experiment. There's a brand in your experiment that I used to use and always wondered if it really made a difference. I've shared your videos with others who refuse to believe that they might have been wasting their money and They are now believers. It's hard for many of us to admit and accept that our beliefs have been wrong, but it's great to find out the truth, whatever it is. Thanks again.

    You’ll never please everybody, great videos. I will say that I use the regular sta-bil in some of my stuff. I have a generator that has had the same regular 87 pump gas with ethanol in it for almost 4 years now. I start it about twice a year to check it and it always starts in about 3 pulls and i take the choke off as soon as it starts.

  • @JeffinTD
    @JeffinTD Před 3 lety

    Great video. Kinda impressed they are starting as well as they do. My personal choice is non-ethanol gas with no additive. If I suspect I might not use the engine for years and it has a plastic tank I run it dry. Steel tank I’ll leave full to try to avoid condensation and rust- but expect to have to dump it and perhaps clean to bring it back to service.

  • @andrewmantle7627
    @andrewmantle7627 Před 3 lety +6

    I see you have the engines equipped with a valve in the fuel line. It would be interesting to see how shutting the fuel off and letting the float bowl burn dry would affect the starting. Actually I know it helps, because I do it.

    • @dkeith45
      @dkeith45 Před 3 lety +1

      It does help, but not forever. I've done that on an old Craftsman riding mower with an 11hp B&S to pull a yard cart in the summer, and sometimes in the colder months. Every time I shut it off for the day, I close the valve and let it run till it dies. That worked fine for two years. This spring it started right up as usual, but then died about thirty minutes later and wouldn't restart without starting fluid. I pulled the bowl and sure enough, sediment. Took the whole carb off and cleaned it and it ran good again. I guess next season I'll actually remove the bowl and dry it to see how long that works. But one thing for sure I learned is, the fuel filter in the gas line has no effect. Might keep out large particles like grass or something, but not the tiny stuff that eventually clogs the carb. Ofc, that tiny stuff could be coming in through the air filter too.

    • @crabtrap
      @crabtrap Před 3 lety

      @@dkeith45 most likely the dry bowl allowed for gaskets and seals and o-ring to dryrot a bit also allows the internal carb body to oxidize(depending on ketal makeup), that accounts for your bowl debri. its a damned if u do, damned if you don't situation. last of the yrs i run dry ,then add straight seafoam to tank and give quick start then store the tractor. it will stop the dryrot and also never varnish and is a lube too
