I know it is kinda off topic but does anyone know of a good website to watch new series online?
@Larry Colin flixportal :P
Little did they know when making that test bench the engines are sitting on would be worth a fortune in lumber a year and half later!!!
Good one
thats true lumbers crazy and sold out
That was a cool comment Jinx. Wonder why lumber, fuel, and beef is more expensive now?
Best comment!!
Lol
When you get done with your engine stand, put that lumber on Craigslist! You have at least a Thousand dollars worth of lumber now!
I am so thankful for the support that the oil industry has contributed to my business. Thanks ethanol!
Let's face it the fuel is crap these days, darn ethanol is not good.
Ethanol is a tax on all of us who buy fuel that benefits a couple corn states.
Think Iowa Caucuses.
Fuck Iowa.
@@TheBandit7613 yeah they ruins it
Ethanol is not the villian you think it is. Its phase seperation is 26 times more rapid than ethanol free fuel, meaning the water present in the tank will seperate earlier.
Ethanol also doesnt create varnish, that is the petrol/gasoline. If anything ethanol would crystalize, not the aluminium/copper corosion green and white.
@@theadventuresofshellyandfr5618 whats is taters precious?
I don,t like ethanol fuel either. I know that it makes big HP out of a lot of modern engines.Look at a hell cat .I only buy ethanol free. Who knows how long it will be available with the idiots that are running out country.
Found your channel a few weeks ago whin i was looking to rebuild my 066 and must say have enjoyed so far . The burnt kitty broke my heart hope all is well . God bless and stay safe out there
I’m really digging this test!!! Too bad you didn’t include ethanol free gas from the pump. I would have been curious to see how that would have hold up. Can you get it from the pump where you live?
3:17 "the thousand yard ,lawnmower man stare" "Only us true vets have it." "Someday you'll have it too."
That's the game face!
Many motors have been resurected with that very technique. All of your brains power is concentrating on the engine sound. Often seen when cranking over your old Ford small block that you haven't started for year's. Usually not once motor is running. I believe he had his game face engaged, and just had a brain fart and was stuck like that till he recognized actual reality and snapped out of it.😒
Elk skins needs to be in more videos!!
Yeah he’s a good flashlight holder he should get some tarel apparel
hahahaha "Did you wash with dirt?" asks the man who's hands look like they weren't washed in a week :-) I love you guys. Great channel.
Nice haircut Elkskins!
2nd and your subscriber since when you only had 20,000 subscribers. I have said it before and saying it again, your channel is the most underrated channel on youtube. Keep doing what you are doing!
This test is amazing. Don’t stop until a clear winner emerges. You will make history!
Taryl , I'm betting the rubber seals in the sealed jars have cracked from exposure to the gas fumes and temp changes over the past 18 months.
Mason jar lids function like a relief valve so the jar doesn't blow up while pressure canning. All say "don't over tighten", if you do over tighten them, 9/10 they will kink and still let pressure out anyhow. Once you get a little air space, even though it will compress, when the liquid fuel will barely, the gaseous fuel will expand and contract more under changing temperatures. When it starts getting warm enough to over pressure, it's litterally pumping out of the jar. Expanding in the heat of the day then making a vacuum at night and "boiling" the liquid fuel to push out the next day.
Seals could have degraded too, they had to change their seal material a few years back to remove BPA from the mix. A buddy's wife is a chemist for a big bottle company, I guess she was stressed for months at the time, not sure if the new are oil resistant.
Is Elkskins single?? He's looking great with that cut 😊 I wish he was in more videos hes such a sweet guy and he really knows a lot
Would love to see that hot shot carb fix/ clean up stuff put to the test in a couple of the motors that won’t run or run poorly.
Mechanic in a Bottle….
@@notajp That's the ticket. Let's see if it fixes the tombstone engines.
I think you should pull the bowls on all of them. Let's see if anything has started to grow in the bowls.
I bet there's some jelly in all of them, no doubt.
No let’s pull them when the motors die.
Its elimination, the best stabilizer will be the mower that starts.
Chances are none of them will start next time.
@@davidvickers8425 On a somewhat related note, I just started a car that's been sitting in my Dad's driveway fully exposed to Chicago summer and winter weather for a long time, and is almost never used. Found a gasoline receipt for 17 gallons that is dated July of 2016, and the car has only gone 34 miles in almost five years (dad always wrote mileage on gas receipts to track MPG). I did use a bit of carb cleaner to start the engine, but it ran on that 57 month old fuel just fine, and I drove the car around the neighborhood with no issues. My guess is some of these engines will continue starting for many more months, if not years.
@@thomasleary1807 likely your correct. I pulled 7 gallons of fuel out of a car I was working on that was fueled up likely in 2011. It was nasty stuff mixed it with a can of seafoam and ran it in my vtwin John Deere mower ATV sure stunk but still ran fine
Awesome job nice refresher near the end of the week glad to see Elkins cleans up pretty well can’t wait till next video
Elkskins got a nice haircut! Good for you Elkskins! Looking good kid!
"You wash with dirt?" as the pot calls the kettle black.
Pot calling the kettle blackface.
Glad you are doing this..in addition....'Project Farm'.. also did a similar test with almost identical results.
Getting very interesting, a few surprises.......thanks to your sponsers, doing a very fair and unbiased test.....what you wash with dirt.....cracking me up.
New dance moves Taryl! Nice.
How about dropping the carb bowl on an engine that does start and run after the next test.
I think the point is to see which one runs in the end it would be unfair to disturb the carb any more than these Seasonal tests.
pointless it is too see if they start & run without being touched:/
If you ever want to smell old gas, go to an antique farm engine show! I have such an engine, it is nearly 100 years old, and is called a flywheel engine. They don't even have a carpettrator, they are called "mixing valves". For us that have old rancid gas, these engines will run on it, but the odor; well, that's another thing! I suspect though, that these newer fuels will rust the mixing valves too.
Been using regular Sta-Bil in my Craftsman lawn tractor for 12 years, ALWAYS starts in the spring! IMHO the stuff works very well.
Slippers been sippin' off the jars.
I bet 93 octane pump gas is months older than the 86/87 octane due to it sitting in the tank at the gas station longer. Most people don't use high octane in their cars so its possible.
That’s exactly what I was thinking too. 93 is older (from refinery). 87 is going to do the same thing…just watch. Ethanol free fuel is the best choice if you’re storing equipment for long periods of time.
@@gedertr 93 is ethanol free though...
@@Gippetos Not the 93 they are using in this test. It states it has 10% ethanol in it.
Thanks!
Taryl I can not watch enough of your videos! You are a true expert. I love Elk Skins also. He should be in more of your videos. “FIRE IT UP FIRE IT UP FIRE IT UP.. SHUT UP!”

Love your channel
You just made Donnyboy73's day!!
I really enjoy your videos.
I just joined this channel a few days ago and I was all about his videos... very informative on many areas with small engines BUT.... I was scratching my head when I saw an older video about how to store your small engine equipment when he mentioned the higher the octane the gas, the better it is for your small engine.... its really just the opposite:
The higher octane of premium gas won't make your car faster; in fact, the opposite is possible because higher-octane fuel technically has less energy than lower-octane fuel. It's the fuel's ability to be compressed more without pre-igniting that results in more power when used in the appropriate engine.
When this new video just got posted I'm like... " a guy with 40+ years in small engine experience had a brain fart and realizes now that premium gas isn't necessarily great for low compression Briggs, etc engines? "
But I dont want to seem like I'm splitting hairs.. cuz Taryl does a great job explaining so much. I was just amazed he was bamboozled with 94 octane ethanol based gasoline that has been around since 2002.. BUT, I admire his honesty that he was misinformed.
Great work guys!
I wonder how long the 93 octane sat in the tank at the gas station and refinery before you bought it? I only buy 92/93 octane for the reason you suggested. I may have to change my ways. I'll be anxiously waiting to see how these engines do next time. Thank you for this video series.
I figure that the 93 is stale cut most buy 87, dunno
@@ctbale1 Looks that way. I'm gonna switch to 87. Moves a lot quicker than the higher priced stuff.
That's what I always figured.
If I want octane, Flying J has 93 ethanol free. I buy 100 gallons at a time in my pickup bed mount tank.. I use it in my classic Mach 1 and vintage Jeep.
Why is everyone fixated on octane? Octane is only important to stop knock / pinging. 87 is actually more volatile and therefore easier to burn. I have customers always telling me “I put nothing but super in my equipment” Unless the manufacturer requires it, you are wasting your $$$.
In the UK 93 octane fuel is the standard unleaded fuel they sell at the pumps and the super unleaded is usually at 95-99 octane levels. The non starting issues we get are literally every year on equipment that is just over 1 years old. Plus our fuel has to travel from the overseas refinery's before being transported to the gas station's.
Brilliant video thank you 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!!!
It might be interesting to pull the float bowls on all the carburetors to see what's inside of them.
I bet they all look like crap except the ethanol free vp
I agree with you. The VP and some other brand fuels are the best to run in my Husky trimmers and my stihl blowers.
Never really thought of seafoam as a fuel storage additive always added it to old fuel before firing up units that sat around to clean fuel systems.
Interesting test. Very informative.
Glad your are coming around to understanding what I have concluded over years of work...
1) Engines starting: yes they are jetted/carbed for warm weather. They are not snowblower engines hence the easy starting in warm, hard in cold.
2) Bowl fuel: this fuel is exposed to air along with in the presents of ferrous and non ferrous metals which leads to deterioration, separation and corrosion. Tanks are sealed well and plastic. Minimal deterioration.
3) Again I ask...Please drain 1/4 cup of fuel from bowl on engines with no start/ rough start/run then try starting/running again before tearing apart carb.
Hey!!!!!! I can buy 87 octane again..... I'm a rich man again. 😂😂
I service a lot of generators and small engines. Almost all of them have bad carbs or fuel because of ethanol. That stuff ought to be illegal for standard pump gas.
Yeah it should because ethanol will eat the chrome finish off of a trailer hitch
I do as well. And most of them sit for years. Especially generators. I fun them through an ultrasonic cleaner and they are good to go. Old gas was just as bad.
My theory is (and always has been) it comes down to the design and build quality of the engine and fuel system. The 2 that failed probably were sealed the worst and allowed more moisture into the float bowl.
I have power equipment that sits for long periods without additives. Some start just fine, other constantly gum up. Haven't had any problems since switching to ethanol free fuel.
The aluminum reacts with the ethanol in the fuel. That is where the jelly comes from, from the chemical reaction between the two.
Nice video guys. I bet you're right about the jelly in all the carbs. Thanks.
Check the gas cans to see if the fuel is similar to the fuel in the carb bowl that is gummed up.
loving the test bed chaps :-)
I know I am so caught up in the series you’re doing a nice job let’s get to the motors in 2022 to see what ones are running which ones don’t keep it up boys you’re doing good
God bless you nice fuel experiment
Love watching your repairs, I know you will understand what is wrong with my Craftsman TL2000 2012 riding lawn mower. The mower belt comes off on mower deck levels 1-2-3 when the PTO is engaged. Right now belt will only stay on/work level 4 & 5 when engaging the mower blades. Is there a deck adjustment? Need to know how to send you money after I make your recommended repair to fix; so mower belt works on all 5 setting for cutting height. Good belt on, no issues there. Thanks.
getting exciting!
I enjoy your channel
Hey Cuz, Takes a great man to call himself on the carpet. I think colder weather plays a role as well based on winter months test. I'm just a hobbyist.
Poor Elk Skins... I bathe in dirt sometimes also so don't feel bad. Part of living the tractor life. 😀
Elkskins might have a point. Could it be that Ronnie has been paid by k100 to take out the completion? Lol
"Don't you worry your dirty little head." ROTFLMAO!
In Canada here. Switched to TrueFuel with no ethanol. My lawnmower and snowblower start with only a few pulls every season now. With the ethanol fuels I was tearing down carbs all the time to get the gel goo out. I use the Stabil too.
Yeah, the light with the scratchy flint wheel.....
Thays a good one taryl now I know what a of that hel is I find I carbs when it completely dries it turns into a powder
O great one with the Coalgate smile, I can only say that I have used the Sta-Bil products 30 + years the red stuff and then the Marine Sta-Bil & 360 in 10% gas year round with never a problem in everything from the snowblowers, mowers to the muscle cars. But I never let it go more than 6 months without siphoning out the old and filling with fresh, running the older gas thru the garden tractor.Even checked carb bowls on 20+ mowers and snowblowers and had no corrosion. So there's your dinner.
Very interesting video
I would be interested in seeing the inside of the bowl of the one that started on the first pull.
I added liqui moly stabilizer this winter and al motors start fine. But I also switched from octane 95 to 100.
Great videos! 👍you left one out though 😮. Marvel mystery oil.
It could be "Dancing With the Stars" next for you Taryl.
Great video
Awesome!
It's all Ronnie jergensteins fualt, everyone knows that.
I see what you did there.............. very clever 🤔
that SCUMBAG !
I don't know about the VP fuel but the Stihl fuel is mostly naphtha according to the SDS. I worked at an auto parts store and the brand we sold was mostly paint thinner. Unless you have the jar rings really tight they might not seal. Mason jars are made to vent pressure out and form a vacuum when you are canning with them.
I love the sfx editing, it's so funny. You guys are hilarious XDDD Keep it up, fam!
Next time give pri-g a try not found in stores its a industrial one we use it in boats and It will even rejuvenate old fuel somewhat. Google it not hardly any bad comments on it. Like you Ive been mechanic 42 years and shop owner too. Best stuff Ive ever seen ever!
I can't believe I've been waiting on a fail for 18 months, about time!
@17:37 @27:16 warm air can contain more moisture and can evaporate more liquid water, whereas moisture might condense in cold air, thereby mixing with the fuel and causing starting problems.
That's right temperature does have something to do with it higher the octane it requires more heat and compression to ignite.
Man you should sell this information in a set of some kind, this is stuff you only get experience and time, thanks for sharing your ideas and videos!
The 93 octane fuel is what we use in the UK as standard unleaded fuel. No wonder we see so many starting issues with garden machinery and small engine equipment.
Great video. I have been running non ethanol fuel in my small engines. I wish you had that in the test. Just curious. I have some equipment I use only once or twice a year. Generator and Chipper. I always run them dry. But I do use Star Tron. Looking forward to see who will win. Thanks Taryl keep the videos coming.
Engine 3 has VP small engine fuel which is a non ethanol fuel
Wish he had non-ethanol in there, too. I use it with Stabil and have never had an issue - running them out if they're going to sit too long. Fire right up next season.
Did you add those fuel shut of valves to those test engines or did they come with ?
Things to consider.. all raw gas is the same.. depending major oil companies add the own additives as I remember some companies use petroxs whatever.. some used techron generally your off-brand filling stations don't use any extra additives.
Those little motors are tough
I don't think anything makes me sweat faster than trying to start a stubborn engine. Way to keep your cool. 😎
Interesting!
That octane therory those teachers gave is backwards... Octane level is resistance to detonation so the higher the octane the more resistance to the mixture igniting under compression and heat. The lower the ocatne to more volitle the fuel is, the higher the octane level the fuel is less volitile. The longer the fuel sits exposed to the open air the less volitile the fuel becomes, so in therory the octane rating goes up the longer the fuel sits. The main reason why I run 92 octane in small engines is because here in my part of Canada 92 octane is ethanol free. I also run it for the resistance to detonation, especially in chainsaws. Stihl calls for at least 92 octane if I remember correctly. In a regular lawnmower engine, I cant see needing anything but regular 87 octane which they obviously run fine on.
I've been buying Sunoco standard race fuel 110 octane. After sitting my generator for 2-3 years it started on the third pull. But the problem I was using AV gas in everything and it's thinner and has something in it that will mess up the rubber parts sadly.
Surprising.
Just curious are the carburetors any different on those Subaru motors as far as the size of the jets
Would like to see a video what you going to do with that trike
I need to know...
How do you get evaporation from a sealed jar. The seal failed LOL
I wonder if the seal material is compatible with gasoline, may not be.
Or its still in there, just in fumes. If you open the lid and it vents hard because its under pressure. Then the seal didn't fail.
@@calholli Not a bad thought but the volume difference of liquid gas to gas vapor is 20 to 1.
That trike you got outside is sik! You should powder coat the frame and get her going!
Daryl's test engine giveaway!!! I call dibs as it was my idea!!! Hahaha!!!
I need one also.... 😁
Taryl!!!
I know dam auto correct.
Man get you some clear shot glasses. I’m using 1 right now they bring out the color of my Jim Bean. Octane 👍🏻
Beam
The first engine did sound tinny like the oct is low.. so the lower the oct it takes less heat and compression to ignite.
As the water sinks to the bottom and combines with alkey-hall we get jelly. I love this stuff, makes me lots of $$$$
Well I was kinda surprised I figured both the straight gas would be fine
There's no such thing as "straight" gas anymore. It all turns to trash now, and no one seems to know why.
@@calholli it always has. But with fuel efficient carbs the jets get clogged easier
@@davidvickers8425 It used to turn to varnish and leave a dark build up.. Now the entire thing just turns to jelly, and a lot quicker. I hate it. lol
I'm surprised you didn't have an engine with 91 octane non-ethanal gas. Just to see if that would leave the crusty critters as well.
