    Honestly this album is a hard fucking 10 for me. Every single song is either a bop, banger, a jam, or all 3 and it has just enough variety in vocal styles and instrumentation while keeping a lot of consistency and cohesiveness and it doesn't overstay its welcome. Just an all around solid album that I've been jamming a lot this past week.

    PUP are jazz-trained musicians, and that education reflects in their music. Elements such as mixolydian scales and jazz-influenced rhythms for example in their music really set their sound apart from pop-punk bands that rely on powerchords for me, personally

    It’s way out of season, but I’d love to hear what you think about The Unraveling of PUPtheband - for me it took everything that was good about Morbid Stuff and added some really cool twists, and even if I wasn’t in love with the kinda jokey 2nd and 3rd 4 chords tracks, it was such a relief to hear that they’re still improving after This Place Sucks Ass (which felt a lil formulaic imo)

  • @Lewabwee
    @Lewabwee Před 5 lety +14

    Yeah I was kind of not excited for this album coming up to it and on first listen it didn't blow my mind but I absolutely agree that this was one of the best pop-punk albums of the decade. As musicians they've grown up and matured over the course of their career in a way that I feel like hardly any bands do, especially pop-punk bands. And their lyrics are whiny but also very self-aware and the album as a whole seems to be less about whining and more about that growing sense of self-awareness. Like knowing you need to improve yourself and realizing it's a process but still kind of not really being there yet (and as he directly acknowledges in no small part because Stefan has based his career as a lyricist off whining). I really like the mood of the album a lot.

    only issue I'v found with MS are the differences in production from TDIO. The latter sounds like Steve's telecaster deluxe is on a bridge pickup and the new record sounds like his jazzmaster on the neck pickup i.e. a lot less attack in the lead guitar IMO. Even Zack's drums seem to lack punch not in performance but in their sonic presence, again compared to TDIO. It might come down to them wanting a makeover in the mastering for a more professional/ubiquitous sound, instead of a niche punk scene band's sound. Thoughts anyone?

    It was cool watching them debut 2 of these songs in a random basement in Cobourg, ON. Happy that Fatmano likes it too!

    Hi Melon, I suggest you to listen to the Turkish new/dark wave group "Jakuzi". They are not that mainstream even in Turkey, but I absolutely adore their instrumentals and (sometimes pretty dark) diverse lyrics. They've just released their second album "Hata Payi" with some highlights like: "Yangin", "Suphe", "Kendime Ragmen". Their most popular song is easily "Koca bir Sacmalik" from their first album "Fantezi Muzik". They are now on tour and I will be there Amsterdam 11th of May. Now go and listen :)

    Amazing album. I must’ve listened to this album everyday since release (and before release, due to it leaking early). Even though they’re somewhat big in the pop-punk/punk scene, I have a feeling this will be their breakthrough album and gain a lot more fans.

    I personally loved this album, I think it was for sure the best yet from pup and I hope they release more soon. my rating is 7/10 because this album probably has the most variety but i still wanted a little more diversity.

    Was hoping you'd review this, have been listening to this pretty much non-stop over the last week since I got the vinyl. I would go strong 8/light 9 but i'm more of a pop-punk guy. Fav tracks: Kids, Scorpion Hill, Closure and Bare Hands.

    I love PUP, I really do. I think the first album is awesome and The dream is over is even better, but on this one i felt that a lot of melodies were reused, recicled, I felt like i was listening a different version of other pup songs that i already knew
