  • (Timestamps below!) Welcome to the Halloween episode! This is an analysis slash review of an extremely obscure first-person shooter that actually has some genuine merit - Operation Matriarchy. It may look like garbage, but it holds some pleasant surprises inside.

Slav jank I've never heard of? I'm down for this ride

Trying to take on a look as ambitious as ‘full Geigeresque environment’ on the budget of ‘the rubles from behind babushka’s sofa cushions and a crate of Vodka’ is… absurd.
But it threw me through a loop how well they managed it. Some of those wall textures done to look like these enormous structures are really well implemented.
Also that damn computer beeping and a total lack of music leaves me with only one thought:
    *”It’s quiet.”*

There's always a catch with these titles you find off the beaten path...

That was definitely interesting. I love how the enemies look like a bizarre mashup between something the Borg would make and HR Giger’s nightmare fuel. It definitely makes the game feel more unique. That’s too bad that this game is lacking in the sound/music department. I guess it kind of adds to the Slav jank feel. Too bad we don’t have a lot of weird fps games like this. It would’ve been interesting to see what the devs could’ve done with a little bit more time and resources. I should check this fever dream out. That ending is pure gold😂
    Good video.

I bought this in a pack with Dusk 12 and The Stalin Subway 5 years ago, haven't found a fix for the widescreen cutoff but there is a patch to fix most of the weird/broken/missing soundeffects, improve the translation and add 20+ music tracks

Funny you mention Dusk 12, as I have considered it for my channel. I'm sure I'll be inundated with requests for it when I release my video on DUSK in the future.
Anyways, I unfortunately learned about that patch a little too late. But it is impressive how awful the soundscape and translation are by default. I considered re-recording a lot of my footage, though I decided to give viewers the proper out-of-the-box Operation Matriarchy experience.

This is a new one by me. Never seen it before. Huh.
Thought I'd throw out a few ideas for some future videos:
Dreamkiller - It's an FPS based on the Painkiller engine, but with different stuff. Abandonware now.
They're Alive! - More Russian/Slav Jank goodness. Blatantly based off of They Live.)
Redline - A driving FPS hybrid. Underrated, but a lot of fun.
Take No Prisoners - A 90s top down shooter on the Quake 2 engine. A lot of fun, but it almost never gets any love.
Heavy Metal FAKK 2 - A third person shooter based in the Heavy Metal universe, and a sequel to the often maligned "Heavy Metal 2000" animated movie.

I do want to cover DreamKiller eventually! I'm just yet to find a copy that isn't incredibly suspicious.

This game’s graphics make me think of that cancelled Xcom Alliance game. It was supposed to be this tactical squad shooter set in the original Xcom’s continuity where you’d go to this alien Mars base only to realize it’s not actually inactive and that it’s filled with aliens. Unfortunately, it never got completely because one of the people who was absolutely essential left mid development and it fell apart. That’s a game I’d LOVE to see completed even if the final product wouldn’t be very good. I guess it’s just the allure of the thing.
There’s also this weird Command and Conquer fps called C&C Renegade. I haven’t played it, the game just looks interesting and really fun. From what I’ve heard it had development troubles where they couldn’t really decide if they wanted it to be a tactical shooter or be this Rambo type figure storming through hoards if enemies. This caused the difficulty to be all over the place in certain sections and makes the tone clash with the gameplay. Kind of like how Halo 2 was originally supposed to be a tactical cover shooter until Bungie tried to switch back to playing more like CE at the 11th hour causing these same problems to accrue. From what I hear there’s this fan project that remakes C&C Renegade’s multiplayer in the Unreal engine called Renegade X. It looks similar to Battlefield where all the units have their own classes and it seems to do a good job of translating the large battles of an rts into an fps. Do you think you might ever cover C&C Renegade or probably not? It would be awesome if that game got the Nightdive Studios remaster treatment. Sadly, that will probably never happen.

C&C Renegade actually is on my long list of games to potentially cover, but fairly deep down. I'm a little slow to make these videos so it could be a while.

That’s awesome news! Too bad it won’t be for a while if you do. That game looks like so much fun. It’s too bad that EA killed C&C. I saw some lore videos about the Tiberium universe and it’s pretty crazy how when you get past the B-movie presentation it’s actually a super dark setting. The Tiberium is altering the planet and doing damage akin to the ecological apocalypse in Half-Life 2’s Beta (when stories delve into how ecology impacts the setting and how people in universe deal with it I always find that super interesting. I guess that’s part of why I love the Dune books so much. Well, that and the crazy deep story). There’s also a never ending war between two major powers. It’s a pretty cool setting. Apparently there was some book for it that I never read. There’s so much room for storytelling in that setting.

Yep. Thats some BAD sound design. Kinda dig that alien ladscape though....

I dunno, it doesn't seem that weird to me. It's clearly inspired by Alien. Weirdly Alien straight up popularized that weird HR Giger fetish shit full of feminine aliens involuntarily impregnation, all that dick shaped stuff and sexual undertones. Jesus Christ when I say outloud the themes of Aliens franchise it sounds way way more weird than Operation Matriarchy. Also the game has awful audio because it newer was recorded in the first place, devs messed the schedule and had to release what they had - plugging stock audio effects into everything, bugs, crashes, whatever. The game never had any sound designed, they don't have time for that (or most of other stuff anyway). You can compare audio design with their other games, and that's night and day difference.

      @marriedtomychair  Před rokem +2

Alien is arguably quite weird, but the weirdness of one concept shouldn't invalidate the weirdness of another. I mostly found the idea of an alien race consisting solely of cyborgified women to be uniquely bizarre. If there's any other piece of media with this premise, it's somehow even more obscure than Operation Matriarchy itself.
Just out of curiosity, where did you hear about the sound design from? It would be a good explanation for the abysmal sound design, but I want to know for sure that it's the case.
