- Welcome to what is (as of uploading) the longest video review of Battlespire on the internet. This is an analysis of Battlespire that primarily touches on gameplay and how much of a meme this game as a whole is. I talk about story and lore more than usual in this one.
As of 4/28/2022, Battlespire has been added to Steam. I have no idea if the GOG tweaks I mentioned still apply. If you go for the steam version, it may be best to take the advice I gave with a grain of salt.

Hello everyone,
It has come to my attention that Battlespire has been added to Steam. I have no idea if any of the technical advice I gave still applies, though I would assume most of it does. It is still available on GOG, so if you're worried about the technical advice not applying, go for the GOG version. It's generally better for games this ancient, anyways.
Is there a Unity version of this game?
@@markcorrigan3930 Nope. The only way to play it right now is through Dosbox.
Would be phenomenal once out of the shop. Safe travels stranger. Holy places, time & spaces indeed.

whoever started this "trend" of long reviews of old games should get a some prize.
Perfect background content.
This was a good higly informative video, there aren't many for Battlespire.
Dude seriously 😐 every battlespire video on CZcams is "LOL look at this it's so bad etc..." I'm glad someone's finally done a real video about it
Surprisingly hand to hand is extremly efective in both Arena and Daggerfall too, most builds that actually defeat Jagar Tharn instead of destroying his life-force gem use hand to hand
Interesting, so hand-to-hand is perpetually a meme across the entire franchise. Either extremely good, extremely bad, or both simultaneously. Do you have any videos or a writeup on hand-to-hand in Arena? I want to see that in action.
@@marriedtomychair I dont have any videos of my own run but I found a couple floating around, check this one czcams.com/video/Ts-MRJkVPu8/video.html fighting with a weapon means he parries or evades most of the attacks, compare it to this one czcams.com/video/YjWXX7DvCEk/video.html
@@Disir-Elizbt That is incredible. I'll keep it in mind should I ever decide to try Arena again.
Hmm, a new player in the long form review game. We shall follow your career with great interest.
This was the first game i worked on, it was a crazy transition game in that it was the last game to use sprites where as redguard was the first fully 3d game. Todd was at the company at the time, but i thin he was on another project. We had some really amazing artist working on this, underated game.
This must have took dedication, props to you
may you be blessed with the yt algorithm. great video
It’d be so fucking sick if they’d remake Battlespire, even just on a AA budget. Like I swear to God this game could NOT blow ass if some of its systems were just taken and made a little sense of
I cant believe this video is not as popular as it shoud be, its a great video, with amazing editing, Blessings of CZcams upon ye
Have my subscription, you made a really compelling and in depth review of a game Ive never heard of before and I somehow loved it.
Wow, liked this video a lot. Great insight into a video game most gloss over. Also laughed quite often.
Great advice about the character creation. I wish I knew all of this information before I played the game myself. I remember using a long blade build from some obscure website and by the endgame I struggled so much I remember I used an exploit (which I found on my own) to get over a barrier of daedric sigils that damaged you.
Glad you appreciate it. I was very adamant about putting a lot of build advice in this video. It's easy to screw yourself over like I did trying to make a jack-of-all-trades pure warrior (which is usually the safest build in these sorts of games). Personally, I really hate starting a game over from almost a dozen hours in because I did the RPG equivalent of making a typo on tax returns.
Usually, you have to find the corresponding amulet to pass by those barriers. Though given the way loot functions in this game and how badly obfuscated mandatory keys can be, I can't blame you for using an exploit. Do you remember how to perform the exploit?
I wasn't going to comment... and then I saw your custom Morrowind spells at 36:46. I just CAN'T resist pointing out some of the best (in terms of comedic value) out. In the order in which they appear:
Become FISH
Boomer Bile
elon musk
ez levitate
Greater Fireball 2
Greaterer Fireball
smartest boi
Soul Snipe
super elon musk
*slow clap*
I have to wonder if 'elon musk' is a bonewalker - mostly due to the existence of 'super elon musk' and hence greater bonewalker. Perhaps hunger/dremora? Then again, with mods, said 'elon musk' / 'super elon musk' might be literally anything. The world may never know.
Both of the elon musk spells are just fortify personality. It's a reference to Telvanni bug musk.
@@marriedtomychair Ohhhh... ofc it's a *pun.* xD
Its interesting to look back at how they forshadowed oblivion in other games. Its almost like it was building up to their invasion.
In Arena, Dagon helped tharn trap the emporor
In morrowind, the heart of lorkhan is destroyed, and the tribunal weaken and eventually disappeared. Considering what lorkhan is, i dont doubt destroying the heart make it easier to invade. Also, im sure dagon knew better than to mess with the tribunal.
Then, obviously, battlespire.
Kinospire
Endurance only affects breathing under water.... ENDURANCE. ONLY. AFFECTS. BREATHING. UNDER. WATER.
SOMEONE APPROVED THIS DURING DEVELOPMENT.
Todd Howard is the first name listed under the heading Special Thanks in the Battlespire paper manual that came with the game. It's on page 5 which is labeled CREDITS. Actually this game and Redguard were being worked on at the same time and Todd Howard was in charge of that project. This is why he only has special thanks on Battlespire. Story and lore wise Redguard is definitely the better game. Unfortunately gameplay wise... Not so much. Also Orcs are not monsters in the lore at this time. In Daggerfall, which is BEFORE this game the Orcs are not playable but part of the story is about Orsinium, the Orc province and how their leader, Gortwog is trying to get the Empire to recognize the Orcs as their own province within the Empire.

this guy uses hamachi port forwarding in 2022! *wheeze*
6:20 dude got a tarzan banana Hammock 😂
This videogame made me question my sanity multiple times. At least twice. But at least the art style is baddass.
Good coverage.
Battleslire is a wonderful game, especially if you think about it as a some kind if DLC. it misses open world, trading, resting, many spells, other things you expect to see in TES. but this is all because this game is just one big dungeon crawl. and this is a shame Bethesda didnt develop communication with mobs. I LOVE to talk while I fight! what shall we talk about? HNNNRRGH? WAAH! NASTY mankin!
I hope you are able to find another dungeon crawler at some point. This and underworld ascendant were really good. Even though it's not a dungeon crawl, maybe you could review Morrowind at some point? I know it's not exactly an obscure game per se, but since you do reference it a lot I think it would be a good idea to do a video on it
I do have an obscure 90s dungeon crawler on my list of games to cover in the future. I'll bump it up on my priority list a little.
I've considered a Morrowind review, and even started writing a potential script for it, but I can't say for sure whether it will happen or not. Morrowind is a bit too well-renowned, and I'm not sure I could say much that hasn't already been said.
@@marriedtomychair maybe you could. Maybe you couldn't. But honestly I don't care either way, because you thoroughly break these games down so well, it's enjoyable to watch regardless if it's been something that's been said or not. Heck, even some of your lesser great videos (operation matriarchy) are still better than a lot of stuff that's on CZcams. And honestly you could do something that other people don't do. Which is play the main storyline and be the the good guy. I'm pretty sure you be the first person in not only the history of Morrowind but in the entire elder scrolls history to be the actual hero and not just chaotic neutral at best.😂
Imperials existed since Arena you just didn't play as them. Imperials have had hold over Tamriel since the beginning.
Hand 2 hand in Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion is pretty fun, idk why I keep doing hand to hand in rpgs that gives me the option to do so lol
Meanwhile hand to hand in Skyrim literally doesn't exist.
ha
love the animation on that Scamp
you ll think Bethesda would have done a badass truly faithful TES 3 MORROWIND remake as a way to thank the game that saved their legacy
anyway give me that sexy Breton girl all day
I beat the game blind with 50 wounds. All I can say is kek, git gud.
probably took an uncountable number of retries and reloads, i'm sure.
if you actually did do that though, well done. that's almost as masochistic as it gets. did you use an archery build?
@@marriedtomychair I just counted up all the time from that playthrough and it only took 21 hrs to complete, all the footage is on my channel. I went for long blades and destruction as my primary skills. Currently doing a second playthrough, started with 55 wounds. On my blind playthrough I finished the game with like 50 cure health potions. If I didn't look at anything at all for level 5 it probably would've been a 22 hr or so playthrough admittedly but I looked up a few things for level 5 just because I didn't want to spend too much time on that level with the save bug.
