      Howe did the We Dont Know team get through to the semis being one of the more unremarkable teams except for Maloney?
      As I noted in an earlier episode, could be sth to do with Howes godfathers excellent relationship with a bunch of BBC producers that hes worked with over the years?
      Only Losers say 'We dont know' instead of trying an educated guess like the other teams do coz no points lost for an incorrect bonus answer!

      Truth be told, it's a relatively simple solo (mostly a pentatonic scale) like actually most Oasis solos are, but Page's phrasing and composition taste are at their very best there :D

    • @ericforsyth
      @ericforsyth Před 6 lety +9

      Yeah. God knows Karl Schwarzschild and his ilk are hot with the kids. If any rock and roll can be considered general knowledge (and it certainly can), the solo from Stairway to Heaven has to be. But these moments are great for those of us watching at home. Certainly for those of us who feel like fools on at least half of the questions.

      kiloscott - No excuse. They can identify 19th century German operas, at least one of them should have known Led Zeppelin's most famous hit. it isn't just any 45 year old rock song, nor is it an obscure piece - it is incredibly famous and listed by many as the "greatest" rock song ever. I'm surprised none of them knew it.

    • @CharlesDickens111

      How many teenagers know about Wagner, Offenbach and Verdi? These are elite students - they should have known such an easy, obvious song.

    • @josephkarl2061
      @josephkarl2061 Před 6 lety +2

      kiloscott Gotta agree there. Things like Led Zep tunes won't become classics to be studied in depth for another generation or so. At that point, the works of Plant, JPJ etc. will become serious works in the same breath as Wagner, Beethoven, etc.

    Paxman mentions Thomas Boveri in the questions on genetics but I'm pretty sure he meant Theodor Boveri, don't know how that slip-up happened.
    He also mispronounced the Polish city Łódź as if it begins with an L sound and not a W. Normally an easy thing to get wrong but it just bothers me when he can be so condescending to the contestants when they get things wrong but then can't even pronounce the questions himself.

  • @unclerogerANKI

    This episode was pure gold. Oxlade's expressions went so beyond he got clearly laughed at by his own team. The guy to his right looked like he was getting electrocuted every time the other team got first on a starter. The Fraser-Frazer thing was pure genius, so was Mistlin conferring on something and then giving a completely different answer all of a sudden.
    I still can't like Fitzwilliam much apart from Maloney and I quite liked Emmanuel but if you can't recognise Stairway to Heaven you not only deserve to lose, but you should probably be executed at dawn in the cellars of Burges' Tower House.

      I agree. But especially since 2000, the show's upper class nature has tended to be emphasized with very little to no "chav" questions (according to someone on thr match between Newcastle and Sheffield Hallam) and when there are, they're always there before the last miliseconds of the gong

      Ah yes the anti-Stone mob. Well, my view, Stone seems pretty good and I was very taken on how she, the only English lass on the team got the right answer to the Scottish geography question and was overruled by her colleagues . She's also good under pressure. I am amenable to the view that some teams try and game the system by having compositions that the producers want in for politically correct reasons, I'm sure I've seen a team admit in an article on university challenge they made sure they had a lady and a non-caucasian on the team to increase their appeal. I think every woman left in the QF is superb - Stone, McKeown, Chevallier, Nielsen, Woodland, and has nothing to prove.

    • @adamwalker9796
      @adamwalker9796 Před 6 lety +1

      "I think every woman left in the QF is superb - Stone, McKeown, Chevallier, Nielsen, Woodland, and has nothing to prove"
      I'm not normally one to follow the bandwagon of people who go "MARRY ME *insert name here*!" "Well, hello *again, insert name here* and what have you. But I must say, those women you've mentioned *are* very good. And easy on the eye, if I must say so myself.
      As are the majority of other University Challenge women this year such as Rosenfeld and Frankel, the latter of whom I expected more of a fight out of, last year's Goddard, Clarke, Jackson and Voake. And the year before didn't disappoint with people like Woods, the first opposing captain she faced (McMenamin from the Glasgow team), Bennett, Lilly, the two ICR women (decent enough), Thompson, Buzzard, Warner, Stevenson and as an added bonus, the *entire* Queen Mary team.
      "I'm sure I've seen a team admit in an article on university challenge they made sure they had a lady and a non-caucasian on the team to increase their appeal." They did? Would it be St George's from 2013 according to this video (just listen to the names as announced)? czcams.com/video/1c-H4Bxyo_A/video.html
