  • Sit with the driver and admire the stunning Lötschberg Mountain Railway (Switzerland) at its best, autumn colours, snow-capped mountains and blue skies. We travel in a vintage BLS “Blue Arrow” electric rail-car, designed to give passengers the best possible view of the scenery including a forward facing viewing area behind the driver.

      Hi Alison, thanks for your kind comment, it's appreciated. I didn't really travel much until my 3 children left home to live in New Zealand, China and Scotland. Just visiting them meant some very long journeys from my home on the South Coast of England, this gave me the incentive to explore of the world. Since the early 1980's I used a video camera to create memories of my children growing up and holidays, so when I discovered CZcams it gave the opportunity to share my love of both trains and travel.

    Was this taken on a Sunday? very little traffic plus a lot of maintenance vehicles.
    Shows how railways should be run, bidirectional signals, high speed double cross overs every few kilometers, The main power lines from Blausee hydro station are above the rail catenery as the railway goes down the valley.. The Lotschberger passanger EMU gives a real time line for the journey. Very good, though the right side running was a little confusing to start with, obviously track works before video started.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Před 7 lety

      Hi Brian, sorry I have not replied earlier, I have only just come across this comment. I found the frequent crossovers and bidirectional signalling very interesting as at times it is used to allow a faster passenger train to overtake a slower freight train. Most double track main lines throughout Europe employ cross overs and bidirectional signalling allowing engineering work to take place without closing the line. Our train was unable to start from Brig because there was track work taking place in the station. Railtrack could learn a lot from continental practices, instead of removing cross overs and cripple sidings to save money, they could make the system more robust by keeping them or even adding a few more.

      Hi, again these cab ride videos are taken with a GoPro camera. I use these cameras as the drivers are far more likely to give me permission to place one in the cab, than would be the case with a bigger camera requiring me to accompany it. The downside is that whilst these cameras are OK in daylight, the picture quality in low light conditions is poor. If a more capable small camera comes onto the market I will buy it to use for cab ride videos, enabling me to leave more tunnel footage in. Thanks for the feed-back ... Tim.

A new line has now been built via the Lötschberg base tunnel some 400m (1,312ft) below the existing tunnel. Here we go again, Tim. As an old railway man I prefere cab rides. I'm sure you understand why. However it was a little disappointing that you cut away all the tunnels. I also understand that it is very difficult to film inside tunnels. Depends on your camera and most of all the headlights on the lokomotive and of course whether or not the engineer is willing to cooperate. Never mind all that thanks for the trip. I enjoyed it. Keep it up mate.

      Hi, I understand your liking for cab rides. My more recent videos feature more tunnels, as the cameras and software improve. The train is this video didn't have bright headlights like modern trains on the route, a glimmer in a very dark tunnel, defeated my GoPro camera on the day, although as each new model comes out, they get better in low light situations.

    This is a beautiful video of a very beautiful stretch of line. On the tunnels issue you will never please everyone. I am quite sure that the vast majority of your viewers agree that tunnels should be 'shortened', especially the extremely long ones such as the Lotschberg summit tunnel. The well known ARD Schone Bahnstrecke videos routinely have tunnels 'gekurtze'.(When actually travelling through long tunnels I routinely go to the loo or get out the timetable to plan the next stage of my trip - or both!) I personally think you were a bit too brutal in your editing of tunnels in this particular video. The vast majority of your viewers (including me) would also agree that station/signal stops can be reduced by editing; this is regularly done by almost all producers of 'cabride' videos.

      Hi thanks for commenting, I take notice of what people say and I also enjoy watching videos posted by other people. You Tube provides a great way to share and enjoy travel experiences. Tunnels and the use of music when the camera picks up personal conversations is always a bit of a problem, but overall feedback is generally positive with some very interesting additional comments from time to time..

      I can see the need to cut-out those segments that most people appreciate your time in doing so... but it was a little disappointing, the point at which the tunnels were chosen to be edited. I like entering and exiting the darkness and wonder if you might consider giving it a couple extra seconds on each side next time... thanks, burt

    No-one finds the insides of tunnels interesting ,BUT if you edit them out then the video becomes edited highlights and not the entire drivers view journey. +Timsvideochannel1 Thanks Tim, obviously the insides of tunnels are not interesting so just leaving the screen black would be ok, its just to have the entire journey. The UTUBE Japan and Taiwan railway journey video's are all pretty much complete. Might be interesting to compare an edited and a complete journey to see which gets the most hits...
