Driver's Eye View - Schynige Platte Railway (Switzerland)

- Whilst visiting the railways around Interlaken, I noticed some curious looking diminutive electric locomotives wobbling along, pushing two carriages next to the Interlaken to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen railway line. Today was the last day these little trains ran before the line closed for winter, the sun was shining and I had a few hours to spare, so I made my way to Wilderswil, the start of the line to learn a little more. The train was about to leave, so I took a seat in the front coach, where the lovely lady driving the train allowed me to place a camera in the front window. Please join me for this highly scenic trip, as our train climbs through the golden autumn trees to the lofty heights and amazing views from the Schynige Platte railway.
just awsome vid stunning scenery thank you i realy enjoyed watcing this
Thank you so much Tim. I can think of no better way to end the day than to strap on a camera to the front of a cog train and meander my way up through some of the most gorgeous scenery in all the world. So appreciate you making this possible.
Hi Jim, thank you for your kind comment, Switzerland is one of my favourite holiday destinations and home to some of the most amazing railways, it's my pleasure to share some of the most memorable moments from my Swiss adventures.
Sorta puts our little "Snowdon" into perspective. Gorgeous ride, and I even enjoyed the Music..Thank you so much for sharing..
What magnificent scenery and so pretty. Thank you so much for taking us on a ride.
Thank you John, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Thank you for sharing this here. What a lovely day to take a trip. One day I hope to visit Switzerland and take a train ride too.
Another great train ride I did 2 years ago when I was in Grindelwald, thanks for sharing this view of the journey. Schynige Platte is a wonderful garden to visit
Cheers, I'm pleased you enjoyed this reminder of your own visit to this wonderful little railway, the garden at the top is amazing.
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL !!!! Thank you !!!!
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
This video made me sing How Great Thy Art. What a wonderful train ride. What God has made is so inspiring.
Read your comment as I was beginning the video journey, and it inspired me to do the same! How great He is, indeed! So awe-inspiring the blessings our Father God has bestowed on us. The world is groaning for our Savior Jesus Christ to return, but in the meantime, we certainly should take time to appreciate and be grateful for His wondrous works.

It is my pleasure to take you along with me on this wonderful little train to see some of Switzerland's amazing mountains with their beautifully wooded slopes.
Very relaxing - I like the slow pace. Such a beautiful place to take a vacation!
Its probably the most relaxing train ride I have ever taken, but then who would want to rush past such beautiful scenery.
I had the great fortune to visit Switzerland. It really is that beautiful, Thank-you.
I love Switzerland, there is nowhere else like it, awesome mountains and pretty chalet style houses.
Simply amazing-- such beautiful country. I am so enjoying you travels. Safe journeys ahead. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Hi, Switzerland is a railway enthusiasts dream and the scenery is wonderful. I am pleased you enjoy following my travels and hopefully I can take you to more interesting places.
Absolutely enchanting! Thank you, Tim. What a scoop of the last tram on the last day and sun shining and a perfect ride!!
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. The line closes for Winter maintenance, after which the overhead catenary is removed between Breitlauenen and the summit, to avoid being damaged by the heavy winter snowfall and occasional avalanches.
Great video of great quality! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
what fantastic autumn colours....amazing trains and such beautiful scenery...would have liked to have seen more of the mountains.....
Thanks for a great ride. I've added it to my liked videos to watch again later.

Thanks for your comment, it is appreciated.
It looks like a scenery in the game
GoPro cameras produce that sort of effect.
Nice video, that sure is beautiful country!..Thanks for sharing.
+Bill Mathies
Cheers Bill, where else in the world are such awesome mountains so easily accessible, to admire the outstanding views?
Those lovely autumn colours are beautiful and the nice sunny weather showed them off so well. Very nice ride Tim. 🍂🌳🍁
Autumn in Switzerland is wonderful, my favorite time to visit, just before it turns really cold and snow begins to cover the landscape 😊🎅.
Just one word.....Brilliant. Thanks

Cheers Keith.
Great, wonderful, marvellous, incredible...You can add as more words as you want. Still it will be undescribable. What a country, what a railway!
Seeing is believing, its a magical land, too good to be true.
A wonderful feast of autumn colors 🤩 and those historic (probably) booms of traction poles. Fantastic.🤩🤩🤩
Thanks Tim for this fabulous journey. 👍🏼👌🏼👏🏼
Thank you, I don't think this train has changed much in the last 100 years.
WOW...Amazing. Thanks.
Cheers, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
Spectacular scenery, especially the last 3 or 4 minutes! I'm impressed with all the stonework - a lot of hand labor went into building this line.
To the Swiss, the view from the top of a mountain is something they want to share with the world and a railway is a great way to get people to the top. Switzerland has a love affair with its railways, making it a great place to visit for railway enthusiasts and tourists alike. Their love of all things engineering really shows on their awesome mountain railways, both in the way the lines are engineered and the wonderful locomotives that operate them.
yes from end area really really amazing sight seen what a beautiful journey and construction
It's a wonderful trip in an interesting little train with outstanding views. We have a lot to thank the people who had the vision and determination to build this railway, so that everyone, not just mountaineers can enjoy the view from the top.
Thanks again for another good video adventure Tim, and better yet for sharing.
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed this wonderful railway.
Absolutely charming. A good time of year with the beech trees turning.
I'm pleased you enjoyed it, I love Switzerland in the Fall, the colours are amazing.
Very pleasant, some of the scenery is just like out of a storybook. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it, some of the scenery looks like the illustrations in childhood fairy tale story books.
Thank you for posting I really enjoyed it. Greetings from New York USA 👍
Hi from the UK, I'm glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for Sharing. It’s very nice and clear.
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
mille mercis pour cette promenade fantastique , !!!
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE RETURN TRIP...... THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!!!!! PS LOVED THE HAPPY BUBBLY MUSIC!!!
Hi Becky, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. This is a video taken on the same trip with views looking back down the mountain - czcams.com/video/Bvkys8859y0/video.html
Incredible scenery in one of the most beautiful countries on earth. Most would have no clue what a cog railway was. Educational and esthetically pleasing. Nice job.
Cog railways are also called “rack” railways after the rack gear that is between the running rails. Many use adhesion (no rack) for the less sloped track sections, reserving the rack gear for the steep grades.
Several types of racks are used on different railways.
Different rack systems:
Riggenbach, Strub, Abt, Locher and Lamella. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. The Riggenbach, Strub and Lamella racks have the same size and pitch (spacing) of gear teeth (cogs), so they can be mixed on the same system, and the locomotives have pinions that can engage with all three types of racks.
The first rack railway used the Blekinsop system, having the rack on the outer side of one rail. Blekinsop didn't believe that adhesion (friction) would allow the full power of the locomotive to be used. He was right, but the rack and gear (pinion = gearwheel on the locomotive) is very expensive and suitable only for low speeds, so simple adhesion is the standard for almost all railroads. Modern electric (diesel-electric locomotives have electric motors driving the axles) locomotives have automatic traction control, which reduces power to any wheelsets that slip.
I have added this video to my 'long cab rides' playlist. Wonderful scenery and excellent video.

Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
amazing and wonderful
Once again I was lucky with the weather. The views from the top are amazing.
Thanks, Tim for another spectacular trip on video. I have wanted to do this trip for a long time and now I have right here from my home computer. Good work thanks.
Hello Geoffrey, I'm glad you enjoyed the ride. Within a short train ride of Interlaken are some of Switzerland's most icon mountain railways. I love the place, can't wait to visit again.

This rail line is an amazing engineering accomplishment. I wish there was more information about the construction of it and the difficulties that had to be overcome.

Hi, I really appreciate your kind comment, travel is my passion and it's a pleasure to share my experiences with people who enjoy seeing this wonderful world.
Awesome scenery and views. I've always loved this train ride. I have seen many videos on it. I hope you had a great time I know the views you seen out side windows was fantastic. Thanks for sharing. Be safe my friend. God bless
Hi, I'm so glad our forefathers had the vision to build these railways, people must have thought they were mad at the time. This is one best in Switzerland. Take care. Tim.
@@Timsvideochannel1- So many railways went bankrupt, some several times. In many countries the governments ended up owning the railroads, or at least the main ones.
@@algrayson8965 Hi, many of Switzerland's railroads are in private hands, but the they operate and market themselves as one, with good connections and through ticketing. Government money is available to private railroads for providing a public service.
Such stunning scenery! It has this sublime, ancient yet timeless feel when you're watching it - it was so relaxing. It's a pity that our railways don't run as efficiently
Hi Paul, that's a great description for a ride on this little train. If I worked on this railway, I am sure I would regard every day spent taking tourists along this highly scenic line as a day well spent. Bet they don't have trouble with the poor industrial relations that plague Britain's Southern railway.

Very beautiful and interesting video. Thanks and Congratulations to the team presenting this video.
Wishing,let them present more videos......
Thank you for your kind comment, I will try to upload at least one video a week.
Thanks for a wonderful video!...
Than you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
The country is so beautiful. I love Europe. Lots of it reminds me of where i live in Canada. Beautiful mountains and nice views of amazing lakes and rivers.
The Rockies in Canada are amazing, especially in winter or the fall, only the Swiss chalet houses are missing.
c’est magnifique ! merci pour ce beau paysage ! 😉💐
Merci, je suis heureux que vous avez apprécié le trajet.
Wonderful video! Very nostalgic line. If you have another time in Summer, try going up there to Schynige Platte again and wander through the trail to First, then take the chairlift down to Grindelwald. It's one of the most spectacular viewpoints from the Alps. Oh thank you for sharing this video!
+supergee7
Thanks, your comment is appreciated. I would love to return and do the walk and chairlift. Hopefully I will have more time on my next visit.
Great video. Beautiful Fall colors as well.
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride.
such a beautiful country. looks like heaven and beyond
Its even more beautiful than it looks in the video.
This amazing video could be a dictionary definition of "slower pace of life"...even the birds liked to play tag with the train - 7:17 - and I loved the begonias in the flower box - 12:21! The crawling pace of the cog train compels you to relax your muscles and feel tension melt away, while you patiently enjoy the magnificent scenery slowly pass by. The railway could almost be a footpath through the forest and meadows (29:48), and enjoying the beauty from the train is about the same as if you were walking the same path...you feel you could reach out and touch the trees, breathe in the fragrance of the leaves, and listen to the silence of the autumn forest. After watching numerous fantastic cab ride videos (some of them yours, Tim!) at speeds up to 160 km/hr, this is an absolutely refreshing change of pace. Thank you for making the effort to catch "the last cog train on the last day of the season" and treating all of us to this wonderful video! Cheers!
Hi Stan, I enjoyed reading your comment, there is a lot to be said for taking life at a slower pace, especially when the scenery is as beautiful as that seen from the Schynige Platte Railway. It amazes me the things these visionary people achieved, they took massive financial risks, building incredible mountain railways using new, often unproven technology. The fact that it still runs today, using much of the original equipment is a real testament to the engineers who built the line and provided the traction. Thank you for taking time to comment, it is appreciated. Tim.
What a wonderful video! I've watched it 3 times and enjoyed each time! I plan to watch it from time to time because it's so relaxing and enjoyable! The scenery is spectacular! The slow pace gives you time to see all the beautiful things Mother Nature has to offer. Thanks so much for posting it!
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I love Swiss engineering and the guys in the loco works are usually happy to show people round if they are not too busy. Your channel name "Swarf Rats" intrigued me as I'm usually in my workshop creating swarf and hopefully a few components as well, although today I'm cylindrical grinding actuating pins for a mould tool I'm making.
I took a look at your channel to see if it was likely metal swarf inspired the name, sure enough there are a few machining videos. I have often wondered whether it would be worthwhile to make a video covering component concept through to watching the finished mould tool working in the press? the nearest I have come to making a video is showing a few shots of stuff I've made and one or two of my machines at work in a video about a 3D printer I'd bought - czcams.com/video/ffR1NGxJsno/video.html I have been taking photos and a few short video clips of the tool I'm making at the moment, as it is the first time I've decided to put one of my own ideas into production, I'm usually doing it for other people. I love engineering, but I've never been sure whether it is something people would watch on CZcams.
Thanks again for your comment, it is appreciated.
You're right about my channel handle. You will also notice my channel avatar is a metal lathe chuck. I haven't really started putting up videos because a health reason kept me from purchasing various machines (lathes, mills, etc.) to do work and make videos. So I machine vicariously through the CZcams machinists that I watch. Thanks to the prompt reply to my comment.
You are welcome, I'll include one or two videos from my workshop in future.
Good amazing train ride👍👍

To think that climb was achieved with a little electric loco weighing just 16 tons and over 100 years old.

In the days before video, I used to look at pictures of the amazing Swiss Railways and wish I could experience them for real, fortunately that day has come now. I am sure that You Tube videos influence peoples holiday choices, just as I was influenced by those pictures I looked at when I was young, so it makes sense for the train staff to help and the young lady who allowed the camera to be placed at the front was very friendly and helpful, making the whole experience most enjoyable and I am extremely grateful to her.

I never post comments to YT videos, even though I spend big portion of my free time here ... but this scenery, I could not resist to write: most beautiful and most calming video on the entire world wide web
Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed riding this amazing little railway to a place that felt like the top of the world, with the kind a views that used to adorn old fashion chocolate boxes and biscuit tins.
Went up this in Summer 2019. It really is as steep as it looks! Nice sedate pace enabling you to take in everything that can be seen, including all the wild flowers, with different species appearing & disappearing again as you gain altitude. Wonderful - one of the highlights of our recent wanderings.
Hi, its amazing to see what our forefathers achieved, the little locomotives wobbling along the tracks, the overhead pantograph look like a piece of flimsy metal balanced on the locomotive, it only made contact with the wire half the time, the compartment in front of the one I was travelling in was reserved for paracenders with their chutes. The Alpine garden at the top, it was a most enjoyable and memorable trip.
@@Timsvideochannel1 I forgot to add - all that trackside equipment is taken down for the winter & then re-erected in the spring...
@@chrismoule7242 Hi, they get the old steam locomotive out to remove and replace the overhead catenery, some people actually pay to join the gang reassembling the overhead wire. Come to think of it, that's not a bad idea, maybe something I'd like to do.
Lindíssimo! Fico fascinada com essa maravilha! ❤🥰🇧🇷
Toutes les lignes de trains touristiques autour d'Interlaken et Brienz sont fabuleuses
Nice video
Thank you.
muy bonitas las montañas gracias por compartir
Gracias, me alegra que haya disfrutado del viaje.
What sort of tossers give work like this the thumbs down? Perhaps they don't like the fact that it's in real time, no frills ...but that makes the experience all the more authentic. I'd take this trip again (for the fourth time) were I ever to go back to Switzerland: might not make it, but at least I have this to remind me. Brilliant, such good quality.
Hi, the area around Interlaken is a Mecca for lovers of narrow gauge railways, as for the thumbs down, we simply have to accept that given a choice a few people will hit the thumbs down, that's life, most people simply stop watching if they are not enjoying it. I'm delighted it bought back good memories from your own visits to the region and maybe you will get to make that forth trip. Take care. Tim.
Que bellos paisajes y lindo el recorrido.
Hola ' me alegro de que disfrutó de la maravillosa campiña Suiza.

Happy memories , great trip and lovely alpine garden when you get to the top
Hi, I'm pleased it rekindled memories from your own trip on the line. It's one of my favourite trips.
@@Timsvideochannel1 I have travelled extensively in Switzerland in both winter and summer both by road and rail. Wonderful country with fantastic scenery and railwaiys of all types which unlike the shambles in UK all work and integrate seamlessly. It also gives me a chance to use my French and Italian. Aber ich spreche kein Schweizer Deutsch oder Romansch 😋
@@docman6157 Hi, I studied French and Italian at school, our head teacher was Italian. It is so rare I get the chance to use either language these days, I've forgotten most of what I learned, fortunately most of the Swiss people I meet speak reasonable English. I have also travelled in and around Switzerland by both road and rail on numerous occasions, the transport system is so good, most places can be reached without the use of a car, I also find the Swiss to be very friendly and helpful. I love to watch the trains come and go at Bern station, I can watch the back of one long double deck train leaving with the next already entering the platform. I wish the Swiss ran Britain's railways. Bons voyages. Tim.
@@Timsvideochannel1 I assume from your welsh coverage you might be from uk. What always amazes me is here railtrack or is it now network rail look after track etc and different TOCs then blame each other for all our problems. InSwitzeland all the different companies are seamless. Do you know who is responsible for their track infrastructure?
@@docman6157 Hi, travel is a great way to learn, I don't think those responsible for our roads and railways have ever left the county they live in !!! The Swiss work together, whether private or public, they take pride in a job well done. I looked this up, you might find it interesting - www.globalrailwayreview.com/article/663/high-levels-of-mechanisation-in-swiss-track-maintenance/
I live on England's South coast, where I drive between Portsmouth and Southampton regularly using the M27, currently it is being converted to a smart motorway, it is taking forever, there is millions of £’s worth of plant sitting idle doing nothing, this also happened before the virus took hold. In Switzerland and Austria, all the plant would be working 24 hrs a day and the job gets done efficiently to a good standard in a reasonable timescale. I just wonder how it is we get it so wrong. In the sixties motorways were built with a breakdown lane, that is now being replaced with a fourth lane, there will be carnage as a result, when a lorry tyre blows and there is nowhere for it to go.
Have you watched the Swiss repair a pothole? it is done with a rolling road block, first all the loose stuff is removed and the hole is routed out with a back taper so that the replacement material will be keyed in, then hot tar is used to seal the surfaces inside the hole, the new tarmacadam is then shovelled in and rolled level, It takes a team of 4 under 10 minutes to fill a large pot hole. In the UK the road is closed with diversions set up through residential roads, nothing happens for a week, because those who set up the diversion and those doing the work do not work together, finally the pot hole gets filled by simply shovelling tarmacadam in and rolling it without any preparation, as a result 6 months later it needs doing again. Sometimes I’m embarrassed by the way a modern British company is run, in my youth it was all done by the local council.
I would love to do a TV program about Southern Region trains in the sixties, they were all compatible, the stockpile of spares was kept to a minimum because they all used the same English Electric traction equipment, today Britain has trains from all over the world, often manufactured in short run bespoke batches, can you imagine the stockpile of spares that will be required to keep them running in the future. In the past engineers learned their trade as apprentices working alongside highly skilled craftsmen, today they go to University where a lecturer who is both out of date and out of touch attempts to teach a bunch of disinterested pupils to do the job. They leave university with a big debt and no usable skills, maybe I am a bit cynical, but I can’t help thinking something has gone terribly wrong with this once great engineering nation of ours.
Thanks for this. It's a nice view from this railway.
And now I know something I didn't know before: How the points work on a rack railway of this design. :) I had to look closely at a photograph on Wikipedia but I could see there that the rack is actually somewhat higher in profile than the rails, meaning that the moving pieces of the rack go over the top of the rails at the points (or are moved away from atop the rails to allow the wheel for that rail to pass between the racks)
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. Watching the turn-out switch tracks at 13:29 is interesting. Logically the cog wheel has to be above rail level to avoid problems as it passes over the running rails at turn-outs and diamond crossings. Rack railways certainly tested the abilities of engineers to find solutions to awkward problems. Carl Roman Abt may have passed away, but his legacy will live on as long as rack railways continue to exist.
