Driver's Eye View - Meiringen to Innertkirchen (Switzerland)

  • Meiringen was the destination of the train I had caught from Interlaken. I had a short wait before catching my next train, giving me time for a coffee, as I walked down the platform a single carriage train arrived. Curiosity got the better of me and I walked towards this little train to find out where it had come from. The driver was very amiable, suggesting I take a ride to the end of the line and he would have me back in time to catch my train. So I purchased a ticket from the on-board ticket machine and sat in the passenger seat next to the driver. Where else in the world can passengers ride with driver? Sit back and enjoy the view with me as we set off down this scenic local branch line.

    Lovely, thanks. This has been my ride to work (Innertkirchen to Zurich, once a week, for 4 Y, 1 per Week) some time ago. Nice to see and "ride it in the memories" again. It was a nice time, living for the weekend in Innertkirchen in a Chalet and Hiking the boots of the feet. If you have chance of visiting the area: you won't be sorry at all...you'll love it. Thanks for the ride !

      That is a wonderful way to live life, working in the attractive city of Zurich in the week and spending weekends hiking in the beautiful countryside around Innertkirchen. I will return to spend more time there, just not quite sure when, there are so many awesome places to visit in the world and only one lifetime to try and fit it all in.

    Tim, what a stunning if unplanned diversion! The best ‘seat in the house’, too. I realise that you posted this some 4 years ago - but I’ve only just stumbled upon it whilst attempting to salve the angst stemming from the worldwide pandemic. I realise your wanderlust and family connections, like so many, have been stymied by the travel bans and hygiene regulations. I thank YT and channel/content producers, like you, for the colourful access to a wealth of diversionary, time filling viewing, that takes me away from four walls and COVID lockdown. Peter

      Hi Peter, although I can't visit my family, they are good at staying in touch via the internet, imagine how isolated we'd feel if the virus had struck before the internet was a thing. I watch very little regular TV, it's so depressing, at a time when people need light entertainment, why are we being hit with a never ending succession of broadcasts about how bad things are. Here in the UK the vaccine is being rolled out, how is it going where you are? There is light at the end of the tunnel, besides I enjoy watching Netflix and CZcams. My day job is keeping me busy, no risk of catching the virus on my commute to work, I step out of my back door, stroke the cat for a minute or two then unlock and enter my workshop. I work alone, the only person I see most days is my wife. I reply to CZcams comments when I've got my machines running. It's not a bad life, although I do miss the company of other people at times. Naturally, I'm looking forward to the lifting of restrictions, I miss travelling. Take care and stay safe. Tim.

      Tim, like you I am subject to Tier 4 England, being just down the coast, beyond the IoW, in Dorset. One of my sons is in Aus with three of my grandchildren; whereas another son is in the UK with two more grandchildren. There is another adult grandchild, somewhere in UK, though we haven’t seen much of her since a baby. Ive finally had the hip surgery that was delayed for over 2 years, so I’m keeping a low profile in lockdown, except for exercise including cycling to build up muscle mass that shrank in the NHS waiting game. FaceTime, skype, videos and phone calls keep contact with the Aussie contingent. But the youngest has recently moved from Kindie to start school and changed from the baby to a confident little boy. Our visit to them was overdue with my early surgery ‘wait’, before COVID protection measures further delayed the (then) scheduled op date by a further 9 months. Luckily I went under the knife during the ‘catchup’ period, in early December, with COVID test and much stated risk of catching it in hospital, before the hospital doors slammed shut again with the winter ‘wave’. I didn’t stay as an inpatient for long. Less than 50 hours; but 6 week follow up clinic is all by phone and physiotherapy is none existent. Just keep following the diagrams in the booklet. DIY recovery. Enough of my moaning. I’m so pleased that I had the Op over two years after it was identified as necessary. Peter

      @@Pjs75 Hi Peter, you live in a nice area, the lock-down restrictions are very limiting although I'm lucky to have a garden and a reasonable size house, it makes life a lot easier, it must be tough for people with children living in a high rise flat with no outdoor space in one of the big cities. By the time I'm allowed to visit my son in New Zealand again, it is likely 3 years will have passed, the next time I'll see my granddaughter, she will no longer be a little girl, she'll be a young lady. From your comment, I can see you are also missing out on seeing your grandchildren growing up.
      You were fortunate to get your hip op when you did, it could be a long time before hospitals are preforming routine surgery again. I hope you make a complete recovery, DIY recuperation is a better option than meeting too many health workers at the moment. Take care and stay safe. Tim.

      Tim, the last time we met up with my Aussie family was 2016: during their visit to the UK. Our last visit to their home was Nov-Dec 2015 as the third Aussie grandchild had just arrived. Between then and now was punctuated with unwanted medical referrals and a procession of false-start waiting times. Since the pandemic broke, as you realise, travel plans are just on hold, whilst the clock ticks inevitably onwards. Since ‘marking time’ has become essential, I’ve found (amongst others) your You Tube channel has given me a vicarious sense of freedom. Watching your productions that captured changing scenery, especially foreign vistas, when amplified through a modern wide screen TV display, as I do my exercise routine, has brought a welcome sense of freedom, within the strictures of social control. Thank you for sharing as I have travelled far and wide during this last year. Keep safe and well. Regards Peter

      @@Pjs75 Getting on for 5 years is a long time to miss form watching grandchildren grow up, hopefully it won't be too much longer. Travel is off the radar for at least the next 3 months, with a bit of luck some travel will be allowed before the end of the year. Once spring arrives, it will be nice to get out to do some gardening, it used to be a chore, now it's a break from being stuck indoors. I am grateful the the many CZcams creators who post to the platform, especially travel related stuff. My CNC milling machine has just stopped, I'll be spending the rest of the week on a manual lathe, no more daytime CZcams viewing at least until next week. Stay safe. Tim.

    Thank you for leaving in the long tunnel on the return trip. In that tunnel there are what appear to be cavities along the left side. Is there any significance to them ie escape tunnels or just the way the rock broke during construction? The sound the train was making when getting up to speed after a stop reminded me of the sound the flying saucers made in the 50s movie, Earth Verse The Flying Saucers. The two sound the same to me. If the train cars haven't changed too much since 58ish I think we have a match. I'm grateful to you for these shots and to the engineers for allowing the cameras to make these possible. Besides the Aareschlucht Ost station, which is towards the Innertkirchen end of the tunnel, the cavities on the left towards Meiringen were part of an underground military HQ built during WW2, in case Switzerland was invaded. The staff lived on a rake of coaches parked in the tunnel (I presume the line was closed). If you walk on the path through the gorge, you get to see the remains of another entrance to the complex, and an explanatory sign.

      Google Translate - Hi, it is sad that so many scenic railway lines have closed in Brazil. Throughout most of Europe the majority of railway lines have survived, there are also many new high-speed lines connecting the capital cities. I live in Britain where around half of all railway lines closed in the 1960's, today the railways are carrying more people than ever. Railways still play a very important role in the modern world.

    Wikipedia: "The Meiringen-Innertkirchen railway (German: Meiringen-Innertkirchen Bahn, MIB) is a 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) metre gauge railway in the Swiss canton of Bern. It covers a distance of 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) between Innertkirchen and Meiringen, where it connects with the Brünig line of the Zentralbahn railway company, which links Interlaken and Lucerne.[1]
    Originally built to support the development of the local hydroelectricity industry, and still owned by the Kraftwerke Oberhasli (KWO) electricity supply company, the line now serves a local transport role, as well as transporting tourists to the scenic Aare Gorge."

      @@Timsvideochannel1 I'm glad too. I have already referenced your video at (I'm not sure if this will work, but here goes...) Day 54: Meiringen with “Sherlock Holmes Falls” and More
      On this day we will back track (literally) back down into the valley to the town of Meiringen. Possibly we could have found cheaper lodging there, but it would not have been up in the fine air of the mountain pass. Our trip can be seen between 07:47 and 10:11 at this site. czcams.com/video/VPyFUnMhSGw/video.html
      From Meiringen I am quite sure that I walked to Reichenbach Falls. It was not all that far. That is the falls where Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had Sherlock Holmes fall to his death (later to revive him). The way to see the falls is by a short tram. When I was there, however, the place was empty and I was not sure how long I would have to wait, so I decided to hike. That was a mistake. There was no obvious, marked trail, and I was literally on goat trails when not bushwacking through brush. I could hear the falls, but when I tried to get near it where there was no fenced off area, I realized that that was actually too dangerous. Now, though, we can see it virtually at czcams.com/video/PwIor9ufmTU/video.html.
      Meiringen has another attraction (which I imagined that I had visited, though I had not. I believe I did go to its lower exit) -- the Aareschlucht “Aare Gorge”. To get to its upper entrance we can take the following train and get off at Aareschlucht Ost station. czcams.com/video/3bzX847i5FY/video.html.
      Then we will walk down through the gorge. Notice the wonderful but simple Swiss engineering. czcams.com/video/Zx3QyJo1Rlc/video.html.
      To get back to our hotel we can return on the train from Meiringen. That part of the trip is shown between 11:10 and 13:19 at the following site. czcams.com/video/tszuwG4n_MI/video.html

      +Cheers Tim! I enjoy those "driver's eye" train trip vids. I suggested PiP 'cause you had some shots in this video that would work well(you were obviously using a second camera) with the shots you took with your main camera. Might I ask what editing software you use? For my work I mainly use Cyberlink Power Director 14 Ultra.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Před 7 lety

      Hi, I use Pinnacle Studio Ultimate version 20. Its pretty good although I can only edit around 10 minutes finished video at a time in 4K because it is very resource hungry and taxes my computer too much. I join the segments into one when I am happy with the result. There are all kinds of PIP options in Studio and I really should give it another go. One of the problems is that more than 60% of the videos I make are watched on mobile phones and I am concerned that PIP might make the picture too small. I have tried Cyberlink Power Director 14 Ultra and to be honest it is very similar to the package I am using, they both preform pretty well, I just need the next generation computer to deal with 4K.

    • @neilforbes416
      @neilforbes416 Před 7 lety

      +Tim, As well as Power Director 14 Ultra(and the earlier PD8 Ultra) I have Pinnacle Studio 18. I've found Studio 18 to be somewhat cumbersome and it took a while to get my head around how to use it. My biggest disappointment with Studio 18 is that it can't/won't allow the use of PNG transparencies. I often design my own title graphics and save them as PNG transparencies. For PD14 Ultra, no problem! The transparent(alpha) area works as it should. However on Pinnacle Studio 18 the alpha area stays black and blots out the image behind it..... not good at all! As for watching video on a mobile phone, Nah! Screen's way too small to get any enjoyment out of the video, not to mention the crappy sound coming out of the tiny speaker, but even using headphones, the small screen ruins it! Give me a good-size computer monitor any day! Cheers!

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Před 7 lety

      Pinnacle is like many programs, it takes a while to learn, but after that it's pretty good. The problem you describe with .png transparencies is one I also suffered from in Pinnacle 17, but not in Avid Studio. It cropped up again in version 20, which was almost unusable when it was first released, until an update solved almost all the issues I was having. I have no problems with HD video, but I limit the length of the video I am creating to around 10 minutes if I am working in 4K, it's no problem then to just import the shorter segments and create the finished article. I don't normally watch video on my phone, but according to You Tube more than half of all views are on a tablet or mobile phone, so it is in my interest to watch my own videos from time to time on a mobile phone to check that everything is legible, as a result I have increased the size of the text I use. Take care. Tim.

      Hi, glad you enjoyed the ride. The tunnels were just too dark to film.

    This line may change drastically by 2025 if the proposal to build the Grimselbahn - which would link Meiringen to Oberwald (on the MGB Disentis - Zermatt line) via an upgraded MIB and a new tunnel, permitting through running between Interlaken Ost and Zermatt/Chur/St. Moritz - is built. In February this year, Cantons Bern and Valais public-ally backed the scheme. Now a decision is awaited on funding by the Swiss Federal Government, but if the scheme comes to pass, Glacier Expresses may be running on this line in the next decade.......!

      Oh I would love that! To have the Brünig line directly linked to the RhB would be fantastic. Not only would it be a link between Interlaken and Zermatt/Chur/St. Moritz, but it would connect Lucerne as well. And my favourite places on earth are Lucerne, Meiringen and Bergün (on the Albula line).
