I have a ford and generally they dont need shimming (as far as factory replacement) however, i put an after market flex plate on and the starter gear "at rest" is actually even with the ring gear (like a typical gear). Obviously its to close, literally the 1/2" of the flexplate to close. I used washers on both sides till it seemed far enough away to engage the ring gear 1/2 -2/3 of the thickness. Later i may just get a solid plate to replace the washers.

I had to use over 1/8 inch of shims to move pinion away from flexplate, to keep it from rubbing on my 350 chevy.

Does not really show the details of putting the shims in and remeasuring. It would have been interesting to see the geometry after he did the shims. Also he did not measure the distance from the ring gear to the starter gear. the instructions call for 1/16th of an inch. Putting the shims in would have altered this. This instructional video goes down as, "well you get the idea". In that case it was helpful, thanks.

One question when I turn it on, it sounds a lot and I put it in new because I bought it new cheaply, that's why what I saw when it arrived was that the connector where the ignition positive goes in the starter motor was broken, what would it be, I don't know what's happening or not. It's original I don't understand what it could be I'm crazy now and the starter motor is new I don't know if it's because it's not the original but it slips and it sounds loud and takes a while to start crashing the bendix help me

I have a very similar starter for my Chevy Small Block Mercruiser in my boat. I've tried all the shims and believe I am actually too far away from the flywheel. I am believing that I actually need to remove metal from the starter mounting block (not shim it away). Any thoughts?

I feel like I have to take a file to all my starters. I'm going on the 5th remaned starter this year for my 454.

if I do mounted the starter in the other mounting holes the starter will not be line up with the block, will be hanging over is that all right to do.

@@jamesjordan7460 you sir are a douche and should not pretend you have any automotive knowledge. When you are needing to make adjustments on anything you just don’t accept that something cannot be done. You obviously have never done custom work or had to modify anything in your life. Oh and BTW I figured it out bc you know I have a brain unlike some.

4th video none show how the shims are installed between starter and motor ,guess I should learn all of the motor mumbo jumbo before watching ,then again if I knew all of that I probably wouldn't be watching this .

I followed these steps accordingly, and the starter is still destroying the fly wheel. Thank Goodness then starter teeth are harder. 🤦🏽‍♂️
