If you pry the pinion gear out as described, with the battery cable connected to the solenoid, THE STARTER WILL CRANK. Always make sure the battery is disconnected during this type of test.

It can also be mounted upside down. Also there is a another gear mesh clearance correction that can be made. Which is if the starter gear has to much clearance shims can be added to the outside bolt only to move the starter closer to the flexplate. You mentioned that you only have to remove the shim but what about if no shims were ever installed and the starter gear or the starter is to far away from the FP. You cant take a shim out if one was never used. In this case you add shims to the outside bolt only. First before you do anything you install the starter and torque the bolts down to 30 foot lbs and get a baseline clearance check.
Also like I mentioned they can also be mounted with the solenoid down towards the ground by turning the front plate 360°. That really helps to keep it away from the headers heat. I've been selling and installing These type of starters for about 15 years as a matter of fact I did one 2 days ago and I'm doing one today.

Great video, I just received my starter and had no idea what the shims were for. I even asked a recent uti grad and he just looked dumbfounded, but now I know more than him on this. Thanks again.

I did it!! Three shims on the bolt closest to the engine to get the proper clearance. I started it and I heard the grinding for a couple of seconds then it disappeared and in subsequent starts there was no noise at all. Thanks again, I've had this problem for six months until I had to replace the starter twice and the flywheel once. Three mechanics came and went and left me in the same boat. Great video, now for some well deserved beers!!

klowny1969 no thank you sir for sharing that info. one question though, is this only a gm thing or does it apply to all starters? I installed many starters before and never had a problem, but I never did this.

With the body shims do you remove both to get closer or one at a time depending on situation

Im having the same issue with my starter. 350 in a 67 Chevelle. Old starter worked fine, no noise at all. Also no shims.
The rebuilt I just put in is making slight grinding noise when the motor starts. Even hear a slight noise when driving. Could it possibly be the shaft on the bendix is so close to the flywheel that it rubs slightly? Or could the pinion be too close to the flywheel

I just installed this same starter and I still get a grinding noise even with both included rectangular shims installed. I went ahead and installed both body shims as well and noticed a bit of an improvement but the bendix still looks a bit close to the flywheel, should I add more shims to the mounting block in addition to those included? Please help, I'm at my wits end with this grinding noise. I'm installing it on a 4.3 vortec v6 with a 4l60 transmission. I had this same problem with the regular starter and was told the high performance starter would fix my problem. It does sound better when it starts though, but I hear a noise like it is clanking on something and when I looked at it the bendix was very close to the flywheel and it appeared as if it could not return inside the starter because of the flywheel. I hope I don't sound redundant, I'd just rather give you as much info as possible. Thanks for any help you may provide.

Check to see if u have the correct starter for your flywheel..starters are designed for certain tooth count flywheel/flexplates ..u can call the manufacturer to find out..thnx for watching

It is the right starter, I read that I can put half a shim on the in board bolt to get more clearance, up to three if needed. I think that will do the trick, ill keep you posted. Thanks for your quick reply!

My starter isn't engaging the flywheel, when I start it it doesn't turn, just makes a God awful '' screeeEeeeeeeEeeee '' sound, like it's pushed up against the flywheel itself, which shim do u think I need

I'm hearing a rapid cracking/clicking noise when I accelerate. I think this started after I installed my Starter but that might be a coincidence. Is that noise common with starters that aren't shimmed right? Or do you all think its something else like a hole in the exhaust pipe somewhere.. cause I've heard that can make that noise too. Thanks.

    • @klowny1969

klowny1969 Yea. I haven't seen any holes in the exhaust. Tomorrow I'm going to plug the pipe with a rag and see if I can find something that way. Any ideas as to what else it could be? Do you think it could be that the starter isn't disengaging from the flywheel?
