    Thank you Summit, this helped me to understand how to correctly measure pinion and ring gear gap.

    How do you get the pinion gear to engage so that you can measure the clearance?

    What if you have a classic car that has the 3 wire starter how would you go about hooking up your yellow wire that feeds the distributor without hooking up a diode??????

  • @losteroni
    @losteroni Před 4 lety +1

    The 99 LS1 motor in my friends Tahoe has a tiny cover that is trapped between the starter and the transmission which means you have to do the clearance check and then take the starter back off if you want to replace the cover !

    Do you need a diode bypass wire for 67 and older?

    Great presentation! But heres a question, i have a 69 impala 327 2 barrel. I dont have headers. Do I really need a mini high torgue starter? Or could i just replace the OEM that is there in your opinion? I am experiencing slow crank

    So i have a bell housing that completely encloses the flywheel except the very front section . i can't take the measurements like this video . i might be able paint the pinion teeth with marking paint like setting up a rear end and inspecting the pattern it makes?

    • @losteroni
      @losteroni Před 4 lety +1

      That is one possibility . I've also got that problem . I did see one video where the guy was able to just barely get in there with a piece of wire but he had a lift !

    I thought this video would help. I have the Battery + wire (2 or 4 AWG), the purple solenoid wire (10 or 12 AWG), red wire and a brown wire (possibly 10 or 12 AWG). On my old starter red and brown wires went on the same terminal as the Battery + wire, but The car isn’t cranking at this point. I originally placed the Battery + wire on the wrong terminal and it would make the bendix spin. I am not even able to duplicate that behavior now.

    I have a 1977 sbc with the 3 hole starter mounting. 168 tooth so I took the O.e.m. starter off and bought a 9200 Powermaster mini starter. I measured the to side by side and the mounting flange is .250" difference. I am beyond pissed! I have to by .250" worth of shims and hope it works! If I'd have needed my truck to run the next day I'd have been S.O.L! Someone please explain why this is?

  • @Rockinruffhouser

    So I bought one. I have a purple wire and a brown wire. I ran the purple to the starter and the other to the electric Choke. The starter works every now and then. But sometimes it will engage the starter but it won’t go all the way through thus giving me the clicking sound. I would go underneath and turn the pinion gear on the starter with my hand. Am I using the wrong starter? Or shims are the problem? It’s a 327sbc by the way on my 64 chevelle malibu ss

    • @SummitRacing
      @SummitRacing  Před 4 lety

      This is typically a result of the gear lash being set too tight. Try measuring and shimming the starter mount again.

    I had a 99 yukon , beat to shit, has a high performance starter , been stranded and had to get towed twice , replaced the cable to starter , new battery , but standard one do i need a bigger battery , not sure whats going on

    • @SummitRacing
      @SummitRacing  Před 3 lety

      If the battery was working before I don’t think you would need a bigger battery. Could be a bad ground, battery going bad, starter solenoid.

      @@SummitRacing found out the wire going to the starter was spliced with a smaller wire , thus frying the smaller wire , can't fix stupid whoever did this ,well you know thanks for your reply back , someone set this up to fai lin other words , torsion adjust bolt busted head , you can tell it was drilled out

      @@SummitRacing My solinoid went bad , but having problems with torsion bar adjustment , someone did a custom job (messed it up ) passenger side is low as heck the bolt on that side had the head sheared off , ( you could tell someone drilled it out becuase there was a dimple were the bolt head should be , do I need to clamp, then replace bolt , or is there any way to tell if the bar went toooo far , that it's not making a difference when I put new bolt in ( I hope I'm making sense )because running the bolt all the way up on passenger side didn't do anything , still low on that side by 2 in , and the other side still had a inch plus to go for max

    On my 350 chevy, I had to use 1/8 in shims to space pinion gear back to avoid rubbing on flywheel after engine started, very poor design.

    Oh ok so what is the big terminal on the out side for then if you are not supposed to use it then WTF is it for ? He didn't go over the terminal for the step up 12 volt for the ignition either . And if you have the engine and trans installed on the car how are you going to get a wire in there to check your tooth clearance get a torch and cut a hole in the bell housing this is a pretty lame ass install video for a Summit video it sucks !

    2:40 "DON'T WORRY ABOUT PARTIAL ENGAGEMENT." Total BS, this will eat your ring gear in short order. Summit, will you be offering free pressure plates in a year after your mini-starter destroys ring gears? Cheap mini-starters are for flippers, not for anyone who plans to keep his car. Anyone can repair their STOCK starter. Usually all that's needed are new springs, brushes, solenoid and starter drive. KEEP IT STOCK, GUYS!
