Have you fallen foul of a rogue trader? I have a solution

  • Hello, My name is Adrian Davey and I've been an electrician since 2001. In that time I have seen the construction industry become reduced to what it is today and you know it's bad when new-build properties have a reputation for being the worst.
My defining moment was a 1-year-old new build that could have killed the family and three young daughters. Despite my best efforts as an ethical tradesperson and being a father myself, I could not get justice for this family and the estimated cost of putting right was over £20,000 for the electrics alone. The rest of the build was also in a bad way and this was not a cheap house!
    We complained to everyone.
The Competent Person scheme the electrician was registered with
    Building control
    Trading Standards
    The HSE
    No one was interested...
How can we live in a world where innocent people get ripped off and left to pick up the pieces?
Believe it or not, there are good tradespeople out there, just like there are good clients, but it's hard to find one because they are all registered with the same people, and this makes it hard for the good tradespeople to stand out from the rogue traders. Also, the current membership schemes will not remove incompetent paying trades from their books as they don't want to lose revenue, and there is nothing in place to protect innocent homeowners.
    My idea is simple.
Find the best electricians, and support them to be the best they can be. As part of their membership, give them free business advice, training, CPD, and incentives to do the right job by giving them a share in a non-profit organisation that I want to create, with a no-claims discount for ensuring that they do their very best.
These are only ideas and I would welcome some more, including your experiences, but ultimately, something needs to change and what is currently out there is not working for anyone. Please get in touch with your stories and we can put those to the government to push for change, but we need your support to build the platform that will create this change.
There are good tradespeople out there and we need to make it easier to find them and we need to support people when things go wrong, as sometimes they do. It's how we resolve them that will make the difference.
Please visit my GoFundMe page to donate and find out how I intend to push for an industry-wide change.
    Thank you and take care
    Adrian

Good stuff Adrian. A CPS should be not for profit and it should help educate it's members and help with disputes. There is a current trend that trades people must be part of a CPS to get work but to me it looks like most CPS are just another cost for the honest trades person who good job regardless of their membership.

Block chain digital smart contracts, this will allow agreements/contracts to be arranged and each part of the contract terms completed and signed off will then automatically release funds to contractors account.

Well done mate for your investment and for showing effort to the electrician industry. Myself I’m a electrician working on a big project so I appreciate the work.My opinion is that there is a lack of training, knowledge etc before getting the money

Will tradespersons have to pay for this?

My plan is to start an electrical competent person scheme, which we currently have, but they are only interested in profit and charge £550 a year for nothing other than a badge.
Our scheme will be different though, because we will support tradespeople with free training, CPD, business support, no-claim bonus for not letting people down which will make their membership cheaper.
Essentially, lots of incentives for their membership and if they don’t follow their membership requirements, then we will deal with them and support the customer.
Initially, with further free training and support.
If they continue to deliberately break their membership rules, then they will be removed from our scheme and any outstanding work rectified, finished.
Ultimately, support for the member, protection of the public.
If this works for electrical we can show these results to the industry and promote change through demonstration

@@Pure_electrical_training thanks for the reply Adrian, though I'm still none the wiser: Would I as a tradesman have to pay for membership?

@@Pure_electrical_training ok, I think I get it now. You plan to set up an NICEIC/NAPIT type CPS, giving the member the opportunity to notify work through your scheme, whilst offering real protection to customers against dodgy work?

@@andrewcadby absolutely, and with incentives to ensure members do right by their customers and disincentives for those that don't.

@@andrewcadby yes, but the plan is too lower the cost by getting every electrician registered, rather than just one per company
