Ugh. Terrible advice. Always carry a straight blade for a draw down with the blade back. You can belt mount or make a cross back shoulder harness with some string. @Jason Hanson You should know this, or I guess you are not a knife fighter? I draw my 13" (7.5" blade) straight blade one handed so I can use my other to defend. It falls out with a little pressure on the case (custom made, of course) from my thumb. I can reach under my shirt, release, draw and cut in a single motion with one hand. If I see your short hand go for your shirt, you are already cut. I can outdraw most concealed gun carriers. Sold alot of knives that way. 😂

Back when I traveled to other countries a lot, I would purchase a fixed blade "souvenir" knife EVERY DAY. I made sure that I had a receipt for that days date. If stopped by the police (only happened once) my cover story was, 'I bought it as a souvenir and have not been back to my motel room (or cabin on the cruise ship)" The one time that the policia decided to check me out, it was in a bag with other souvenirs. So they didn't arrest me for carrying a weapon. I still have a drawer full of sheath knives and switchblades, purchased for that purpose.

The mention of Wal-Mart in the video reminds me of the buzz recently in some circles about the surprising strength and sharpness of Wal Mart's Pioneer Woman cutlery, especially the paring knives. I have been a knife collector for many years.
I have my personal preferences, but I collect all kinds of knives, from all price ranges, to make comparisons and for the novelty value. My knives range from some absolute cheap five dollar tool knives on Amazon, all the way up to a hand made, full tang, survival knife, that is rated for use in any temperature on earth. I have NEVER bought a knife that I would like to be stabbed with. Especially not in the face.
Most of these cheap Mora-style utility knives make perfectly acceptable weapons. In fact here in the UK, apparently the most popular knife used in criminal stabbings is the absolute cheapest kitchens knives from budget stores. Strangely, one of the best "bushcraft" knives I own is a Bahco Wrecking Tool Knive which cost me about $15. Its built like a tank, stainless steel, and designed to help people demolishing houses. Absolute gem.
Worth noting that any knife you carry, in the context of "self defence" (if that is legal where you are) should be considered disposable. If you ever use it, it will most likely be held as evidence for months, years, or permanently. You may end up throwing it a canal if the police are doing searches and you just dont want to have the hassle of "being that dude identified as carrying a knife". So yeah, leave your exotic Damascus bowies at home kids. They may end up becoming a very expensive ornament for the fish.

I get your point. When you need an edge--WalMart does have on-line knives for as little as a buck.
You demonstrated a front of waistband carry. I prefer to have a knife available to whichever hand is free at the moment. My formal knife fighting training is very limited but the need for being able to use either hand in a fight is obvious. I don't use just one hand--the other hand is doing something important--perhaps throwing something or grabbing the other guy or even distracting him.
Butter knives/table knives have full-length tangs that are often full-width tangs, too. Table knives are dull with rounded points but may not be any worse than those all-plastic knives sold commercially. Steak knives are flexible bits of junk with short tangs that don't reach into the handle much. In Iraq, steak knives were used as weapons to put many American soldiers in the hospital--one soldier made medical history because a steak knife with a plastic handle had penetrated his skull, requiring a trip to an American hospital in Germany to remove the blade. Despite table knives being dull with a rounded point, an energetic stab to the face or throat still puts a thin bit of steel in front of a powerful jab--it's gonna leave a mark! In this demonstration I believe that you just needed something to demonstrate technique with. The demonstrated technique would work with a short paring knife.
In a future video I'd like to see you demonstrate the counter-grab. It's standard for self-defense and sport martial arts--when someone grabs an arm the response is to counter-grab and gain control. A counter-grab distracts (what when wrong?) and increases the counter-attack's power. A one-hand thrust has a fraction of the power that stabilizing the victim and thrusting develops.

Just like one sees in prison shanking videos. These aren’t duels, they’re “get off me so I can get away.” An edged weapon regardless of which section of the big box store it comes out of is worthy of consideration. While not sharp, I’ve been carrying Streamlight Micro Stream rechargeables in the 500 lumen range for a while. They are just longer than the width of my palm and don’t attract attention. OC such as POM or even Walmart Saber Red also worthy of consideration. Just remember to take time out of your busy days to script responses and train.

Nice... Walmart is one of my first stops when traveling and knives are always on the list. The good ones go home via UPS and the junk gets left in the hotel or airport before security. Wrap it in a newspaper or between the pages of a magazine and drop it in the trash or leave it in a common area. What he didn't say is to ditch the knife if you have to use it. You don't want to be carrying a bloody knife running down the street. By the way, scissors and forks also work as well as tent spikes, cork screws, and other pointy things. Also make sure that you have Hydrogen Peroxide (also from Walmart) to clean up the blood before you pack. Don't leave evidence like a bloody teeshirt in the hotel garbage can. If you are in a foreign land and you have had to defend yourself, get out as quickly as possible or get to the embassy. Best technique however is to avoid the fight. Know the parts of town that you should avoid. Avoid being out after dark. Blend in. If you look like you don't belong, you are already at a disadvantage.

You can get a lot of power with that technique and it takes more force to get good penetration than you might think. The body has some very tough places, especially in some of the vital areas.
If you want a good all around style of blade that is great for both stabbing and slicing, the good old drop point is really the best at being decent for everything.

His logic made sense, you need to know, see, and witness what your carry blade does. Using a plastic training knife is okay for sparring or demo purposes, but just like you practice with real guns and with real bullets, you should use your "real knife that you want to carry", but be smart and use caution while doing so.

Looks like a Swedish Morakniv Clipper. China copy perhaps.. but even a real Morakniv knife tang doesn't go all the way to the end. And they are still used for heavy duty outdoor tasks like battoning to split logs.. It ( BTW the real Moraknive can be/is used as a survival knife by outdoorsmen.)

Impact weapon along with a knife. I carry two rolls of dimes in the fingers of leather work gloves clinched together with three feet of nylon twine. makes an acceptable sap. you can go through any airport by taking it apart: gloves, string, dimes. put it back together on the plane. Plus you have $20 in dimes, some string, and leather gloves.

you say that is not a survival knife because the tang doesn't go all the way to the tip, but that is a copy of the "Companion Carbon Mora Kniv" .. The same style as Many Scandinavians and Europeans carry in the "Wilds" , and the same as Mors Kochanski the Canadian Bushcraft and Wilderness Survival Instructor, carried and recommended for over 30 years. Based on the Scandanavian Puuko its a style that has been carried for over 400 years in the Scandanavian and Sami Lands.

Sometimes i have to go places in town where I know I'll be patted down or wanded so I carry things i don't mind throwing away or getting taken . Either a cheapo hardware store folder or a retracting razor knife I use as a painter. If I really want to get something inside I will put a 16 penny nail or pen behind my ear . I have enough hair it's invisible and nobody ever wands that high. The key is it has to be easily explained away so the staff doesn't deny you entrance .

Carrying a knife is a good choice even if there are laws forbidding it. If it's concealed than it probably will remain concealed because in most places there are no security checks after leaving the airport. Even a cheap knife can make a big difference in a bad situation. In a way it's like with umbrellas: you have the biggest and best at home, but the cheap foldable one that's on you saves the day.

I think it's important to say that this type of repurposing is something one might do if you don't have better options, but more importantly, is not something to brandish, in an attempt to scare an aggressor away, as some might see it as a challenge, and become more aggressive !
This is something deployed last minute, as a total surprise !
    Strike, damage, then flee !
Remove yourself from the threat !
    As was stated here !
    This, IMHO !

Watching as you punch the blade forward it seems it would make sense to have the blades cutting edge facing away from you and toward the assailant. The back of the blade does nothing. Also those crappy serrated stake knives can be taken from dull to a very sharp edge by swiping both sides of the blade with a sharpening steal.

Great video and excellent points. However, if I'm limited to $3, I'll probably go with a screwdriver instead of a knife. You'll get a more durable product that way, and the screwdriver won't draw as much attention. Add a roll of cheap duct tape, and you can make a usable scabbard from it and the cardboard from the packaging....

I'm not suggesting you do a video of the contents of your bag, although that would be interesting too, but rather under what circumstances you believe it would be preferential to abandon your fortified castle and live in the open? And how long you think you could get by with 30 or 40 lbs of gear?

2 and 1/2 questions. (1) isn't carrying a concealed knife illegal where I live in SF Bay area, People's Republic of Kalifornia? Is this dependent on blade and or knife length? (2) Is this endorsed by a celebrity former NFL Hall of Fame Buffalo running back, actor, rental car pitchman that has two legally confirmed kills under his belt in Brentwood?

Questions - If my attacker is armed (knife or gun) and sees me suddenly going for my waistband, wouldn't they shoot or stab me before I could get my weapon out? If I'm being attacked, hth or knife, does dropping my guard with both hands to my waist make the most sense? What if I'm in a situation where I have to wear a tucked in shirt? What is the downside of having the weapon in a rear carry that I can access with one hand while my other hand can still defend? Especially in a mugging type situation where I can feint reaching back for my wallet and pulling the knife instead?
