HI Wes, I really enjoyed your tutorial. I am in the middle of replacing my cinnamon stained maple doors for my kitchen. I have learned a lot from you and will attmept to build maple shaker style doors. I have been trying different samples of stain finishes, Rubio, Varathane gel stain and General finishes Gel stain. However, I am not totally sold on since my samples are blotchy. Any advice and what is the best topcoat/brand to use?

I really like the finish on the alder door. Could you share the stain color, what you use for the sanding sealer and for the glaze?
The stain color I used on the Alder was Autumn Oak. For a sanding sealer I sprayed a light coat of pre-cat lacquer. The black glaze was VanDykes oil based. Thank you...I appreciate your comments. Good luck in your woodworking adventures :))

Sound quality. Good content but bad sound quality is death for a channel.
What kind of sheen does the lacquer have on your white doors? If you were to build a book shelf painted white would you put a lacquer finish coat on it? Love your videos. Thanks a lot.
Hi...I always put a clear top coat over my paint finishes. It adds to the durability of the finish itself. I prefer a flat sheen rather than a shiner finish...it gives the paint a smoother appearance. Thank you very much....good luck!

I LOVE the look of quarter sawn white oak cabinetry but my current cabinets are in really good shape so it seems frivolous to replace them completely. Hope you are keeping well! Love your videos ❤

Good video! I’ve had problems with that exact spackle flashing through my paint with a dull sheen. Do you not have that problem? I switched to bondo glazing putty and it works better, just wish it wasn’t red!

Wondering what do the pros do to get a professionally looking cabinet door stained nice and even color?
Should I seal the door first with a vinyl sealer or similar before staining? Or maybe spray the stain to get it a more even look
Hi...maple is the hardest wood to get an even stain on. The only way that I have ever been able to get an even stain is with a spray stain and no wiping. This is a very difficult process so be sure to do plenty of practicing first. Good luck...hope this helps. Wes

I have a Woodsong II product spray and wipe stain. I’m going to try spraying it next and have a nice HVLP setup.
I’m going to try both glue size or a 50/50 mix of WB clear and water to try to seal the wood first. Then take my woodsong atain and spray it slowly building layers until I get the color I want. I might use transtint dye to tone it.
Also heard shellac was very good as a sealer but shouldn’t be used with an NGR because it will melt the shellac. I can’t switch to a water based stain at this point so I guess shellac is out.

Hi Wes, on your painted door; the 3 coats are just the ML Campbell Vinyl Primer/Sealer? Is there any other paint besides the WVP? Thank you in advance sir!

After you stained, do you leave it to cure before top coat?

Hi wes, coming from a rookie, what is the significance of using the sanding sealer between glazing? Do you still use a sanding sealer if you dont glaze? What sanding sealer do you use? Thanks
Glaze can not be applied directly to a stain finish as it will destroy the consistency of the stain. The sealer coat protects the stain and allows the glaze to just accent your finish. There are many different types of sealers...I suggest you check with your paint supplier. I am now longer able to get the sealer that I prefer so I am testing out different products myself. BTW...no sealer is required when you are not glazing, just top coat. Good luck! Thank you very much.

Wes, Three question for You. On the White Paint is that a Oil Base White Paint or is It Water Base Paint ?Another thing per 16 ounces of Paint being Oil Base or Water Base, what is the amount of Thinner or Water you use to dilute the paint for spraying? With Oil base Paint are you using Mineral Sprits or other chemical as Acetone to thin the oil base paint?
Hi Waymon...the white paint I use is a tinted vinyl sealer. I don't thin my material when I spray it and I clean up with lacquer thinner. Thanks for watching. Wes

Do you need to put on a stain conditioner first?
I rarely use pre stain conditioners, but you might want to do a test sample with and without to see which you prefer when starting a project. Thanks for watching. Wes

Could you tell me what is the purpose of each stage: Seal, Glaze, and Top Coat. I have my assumptions but I am new to woodworking and I never read a good answer that tells me why to seal or not glaze or not.
Let's take this in order...stain first the raw wood to the desired color you choose. Then a sealer coat to seal in the color and apply the glaze (glaze cannot be applied directly to stain) to highlight the profiles of your door. Final step is to apply a top coat to seal your glaze and provide a lasting durable finish. Hope this helps. Wes

Naw man. Get some 3 in one Sherwood, choose levels of glosses and tint to your desire, or not. Spray a coat, slick it out. Repeat twice
On the painted doors did you use 5 coats? 3 of the vinyl primer and 2 coats of clear top coat (what type?)

So I started to watch your video, and when you got to the spray coat on the Alder door, you didn't tell us what your were spraying! Then you went on to the black glaze coat and again didn't tell us what brand, or anything else about this "glaze". As most people are watching your videos to learn these are kind of important details. So, I'm sorry but I'm outta here!
