I just came across this when I searched how to use my orbital sander. I wish I would’ve seen this before I started my cabinet project. Almost looks therapeutic the way you do it.
I thought the same! Very satisfying to watch
Thanks, great tutorial. Getting ready to refinish my oak kitchen. I know it's a lot of work but short cuts are usually what gets people in trouble. I was looking for someone to teach an easier way to strip old stain and clear coat, and here I found it. Thanks again!
Thank you for this instructional! 9yrs later and your video has inspired me, a new home owner, to redo my kitchen THE RIGHT WAY! I'm super stoked to put in the work now, especially after seeing what the result could be 🤩
Very informative! Thank you for taking the time to show all steps and explain where the tougher step are.
Man your video was money. And time saving. I accomplished thistle task faster and better than I expected. Thanks again.
wow, that's a lot of work.
Yup, just 27 more panels to go!
if you read the instructions on the staining can and/or sealant can (either polyurethane or shellac), it says to do this procedure.
Great video! Thank you for addressing each step without dragging it out with excessive wordiness. My wife and I are getting ready to do our kitchen and bath cabinets in preparation to sell our home, and your video helps me feel like I have a better idea of what to expect in order to do this job. Keep up the good work!
Very well done. It is very difficult to really teach well, and you have done exactly that. I will feel much more confident when I do this.
Magnificently very detailed and lots of care. All the more reason to give the job to a professional like you than to attempt it your self. Coming from a DIY guy and professional engineer.
You sir are a pro at what you do. Thank you for teaching others your craft.
geez why dont you offer him a BJ
Malcolm Baldwin it's a three year old comment. Project daddy issues much?
LOL , I was just saying . god he can stain a cabinet , should he get the noble piece prize ?
Certainly it is a lot of work, but if you consider you do not have to redo this for several years, it is worth the time and effort.
Thanks for a simple, yet complete video for refinishing cabinets. If you want a professional look,,, it takes time...Great job,,, music is cool to.
Excellent information! Simple and to the point
A really well thought video. Wish I would have thought about a stripper! Thanks for recommending good products.
More videos need to be this great and helpful
Beautiful work. Succinct video. Very cathartic watching it. Thanks 😊
Great tutorial! Thank you!!
Great information and explanation of each step!
Perfect! I am 24 and just bought my first house. 90s cabinets all over. I am doing this and using Aqua Coat to fill the grain too. Can't wait to start.
Ayeee same how'd it go?
BEWARE! Some panel door are cheap laminated panels and are not hard wood. Striping and sanding the inner panel will result in irreparable damage.
Great info thank you
Great tutorial.
Thank you I purchased the Jasco remover
This was helpful!!
I'm about ready to start stripping clear coat and paint off a set of oak wood cabinets. These need a bit of work, but if I do it right they will look amazing. I really appreciate this video instruction, it's probably the best one I've found on the subject. However, my cabinets are a bit more detailed than what's shown in this video. My question is, how do you strip paint and clear coat off these more detailed areas where the milti-tool can't get to? I've seen people use a fine wire wheel or even a brass wire brush, but I worry about taking more material off than necessary. What do you suggest?
Thanks!
Thanks for great info
Awesome. I don't trust there all-in-one kits you can buy at home depot where you just end up with cheap paint over wood. It's nice to see how to do refinishing properly.
Day one, door one complete. This should only take a month 🤪
Good content
Wow incredible! Looks beautiful! You make it look so easy! Hopefully I can get this done half as good as you did. Awesome!
Thank you for the great video! Do you recommend removing the cabinet boxes for refinishing or leaving them in place? I'm guessing it is personal preference but thought a pro may be able to offer some insight based on experience.
Please write the products you used.
Thanks for the tutorial. I have a full set of kitchen cabinets to refinish. I could throw up thinking of it lol The cabinets are white now and not sure if I'll go white again or stain. What type of paint would you recommend for it.? I don't want anything that will easy chip, flake or peel off. Almost like it was baked on. Thanks again
I am a beginner, what should I use instead of shellac?
Can I use a palm sander instead?
Very helpful video.
This is so helpful but I still have questions regarding the cabinet frames, cabinets with grooved boarders, crown molding, and laminate side walls. I want to try. Maybe I will do my bathroom vanity first and then determine if I tackle kitchen.
It is a tack cloth or tack rag. It's a cloth that is saturated with paraffin wax, which makes dust particles stick to it
Great video !!! Why are you using Wood Conditioner on oak ? Is it normal that the stain is fading a little when applying the first clear coat ? Thanks.
Omg I love them come do mine!!
great video. im tackling this soon and this really makes me feel better about my project
wow its nice work thanks for giving ah ideas. 😊
do you apply finish coat like poly to the outside only or can you put it on both. for kitchen or bathroom cabinet doors.
Is the first and second step needed? That is the paint removal application and then scraping? Can 36grit sanding do not remove it?
Your video caught my eye because I really want to break them down and do it right. I agree with the gloves with any chemical and being a industrial safety coordinator, wouldn't glasses be a good idea? Skin heals, eyes are forever.
This is a great video! Do you remove the cabinet crown molding to refinish or sand it in place?
We typically just replace the crown
I've just started my project. Now I have the details. Thank you.
This video is 5 years old . I bet he just now finished his kitchen
Malcolm Baldwin lmao
Definitely a little overkill. Not the most efficient. You don't need stripper for sure. And 3 different sand papers? Come on.
@@Jaysen6740 this is why if you want it done right... personally I'd use this guy's method, but not everyone wants to slave for the highest quality work. Or pay for it, for that matter.
I think it goes to show how much work you put in makes for the most professional outcome. I personally think he did an amazing job and the customer had to have been impressed.
Lol this video just motivated me not to do it seems like it took hours just for one little door panel 😂
A lot of work but awesome tutorial!
I am considering changing out the yellow oak cabinets by sanding them down, bleeching them if needed (to get the yellow out) and then conditioning them and applying a protective coat. I don't know anything about oak but I can tell you I don't like the deep yellow look of them. Is it stained yellow or is it a natural look, I wonder?
Not sure if you’ve done your project yet. Oil based urethane can yellow over time, especially if the room gets lots of sun, it could be that. Try stripping a non-visible or less obvious spot to see if it’s that. Also see if the interior of the cupboard is “less yellow”. If so, that’ll give some impression if there’s any yellowing.
Now multiply this by 25-30 doors, 10-15 drawers, upper cabinet and lower cabinet bases and you should be done in about 12 to 18 months.
What color was that final stain?
Great video, very informative, clear and precise
Please do not ask stupid questions!
@@witekb5 There isn't such a thing as a dumb question. But there are very rude people are not polite.
Don't listen to the rude A-hole. Your question is a valid one if you aren't familiar with the process as it does look like another darker stain. However, it is just a second application of the same Varathane "Kona" stain as the first application. Some people have try to feel superior even if they only know a little, they weaponize what little they know in order to puff themselves up... sad little guy. LOL!
When you do the end cabinet, the outer face is usually a cheap laminate cover, right? How do you prep that surface differently?
Completely different thing... You would want to find a matching color peel-and-stick laminate sheet; or possibly glue a thin sheet of plywood to it, but not sure how you'd prep the surface for glue to stick, unless the old laminate can come right off.
Only question I have is how did you get that pair of pants to remain standing at :25 minute?
Necessary to use that stain remover? what happens if you just try to sand it off with the 80 frit instead?
Chad Beebe. No you don't have to use the paint stripper, but it will take you a lot longer to send the finish off. Also you will be using a lot more sand paper.
Ok good to know!
What sander are you using???
Do you recommend still passing the steel wool for just ONE coat of stain?
+YoSoyGus1 Yes
I sanded down my cabinets and stained them. On the doors I have small little bumps that look like the measles. Any clue why? I sanded the doors, and used an tack pad to remove any excess dust or shavings.
Send me some pictures of the issues y ou u are having.
Very helpful video. Music is a bit loud though, and at times made it hard to hear what is being said.
I wipe down the inside of the cabinet edges but it leaves a streak and no matter how i wipe it leaves behind a little blotch. How can I avoid this?
how do you do the other side?:
do you wait till one side is completely done and then flip it and do it for the other side? or is there a way to do both sides at once?
We always do one side at a time
So we not gonna see the final finishing on this work?
I am painting my oak cabinets black. Sanding them down now. Was wondering if I should use a primer or wood conditioner prior to painting. Which works best? I am painting them black.
If you are painting the cabinets do not use wood conditioner. Use primer.
While i never recommend brushing or rolling the paint on the cabinets it is certainly done. However, please consider using an aerosol applied primer instead of brushing or rolling it on.
Good luck!

@@lunesme thank you
Did you finish the Black cabinets? Im considering Espresso but wondered what the black looked like. And why black?
Going to this kind of detail would take a month for one set of cabinets!! Unless you have no money or are emotionally attached to your cabinets, I'd give them to a Habitat store and buy new doors.
What color was the stain u put on
What brand/model sander is that (the small one)?
Foodlove with Anna Fein Multimaster
Can you show how you got the backs done too? Did you just do the tops and then turn them over? How did it go on the edges then? Without the back being done step it would be easy to ruin the overall final finishing.
+John Ellzey
The backs are done the exact same way, by flipping the doors over. We use the 3" ABS pipe to cut spacers out of and lay the doors on those to suspend the doors up from the table to get to the sides. So, you work on one side at a time. When the finishes are completely cured, flip the doors over and repeat the process.
This just gave me an idea, if inexperienced with the shellac painting. Do the backs first, until you're completely comfortable doing it, then do fronts.
I'm not too sure I want to do this anymore.. too much work. You can't apply wood stain directly to the wood? Do you HAVE to use a wood conditioner?
Kimberley,
You don't have to apply the conditioner before you apply the stain, but I highly recommend that you do. The conditioner will ensure that the wood "takes" the stain evenly. If you don't condition the wood before you apply the stain you risk a spotty looking stain.
Applying the conditioner is probably the easiest step in this whole process, so i strongly recommend you don't skip it :)
What was the tool you used before the orbital looks very useful
James Mays We used tool called MultiMaster by Fein

Corvus Construction awesome thx
Can you please reply about the sander machine used for this work
it's a makita orbital sander you blind dip shet . Now get back to Subway and finish your shift
Malcolm Baldwin Lol what a douche. Doxx’d
can you tell me the color and brand of the stain used in this video? I need to refinish a pantry that same color. thanks
guess not
can u answer the guy?
Fuckin' sweet!
Is this safe for veneers?
How do you clean your brushes?
If it's shellac you are cleaning off - use denatured alcohol.
What kind of cloth is that you use after steel wool
Tack cloth
Do you remember what kind of wood this was?
Man that would take forever ...... I’ve got 64 doors and drawers
What about the actual cabinet? Removing the doors is easy enough but do you suggest removing the entire cabinet as well?
The cabinet face frames and sides are refinished on site
And that was 1 door! I have 40
This is easy on shaker doors
What is the name of the sanding tool with the triangle head to it?
Multimaster made by Fein
@@CorvusConstruction Thnx brother.
What are the tools that I need to be able to do this I know I need a sander You did talk about it in your video but if you could do me a favor and send me a message back stating what I actually need to be able to do this I’d be really helpful and grateful thank you
The stain is by Varathane, the color i believe was Mahogany
Do you know for sure if it was that color?
No "After" pictures?
dude spray the stain one coat skim second coat full coverage perfect prep but horrible stain and clear application process I spray my clear after wards u can use a siphon to spray stain and airless for clear super fast amazing prep I'm impressed with that!!
6 months later I begin to paint my first paint layer. 😂
might as well buy new cabinet.
It would be cheaper to buy new cabinets. Unless you did it yourself.
Eminem rap
Coronavirus Construction?
Background music is too loud. Other than that, great video
Wow, almost worth it to just buy new cabinets.
No need for all this nonsense. It would take a month to do the cabinets in a standard kitchen. Remove the cabinet doors and clean them with mineral spirits. Sand the doors with 220 grit sandpaper and restain.
*_'Christ!'_* - are you doing a DIY shop video or a music video for Grampa?! ... I could hardly *_Hear_* ya, *_'eh?!'_* ... Would've rather heard much of the power-tools and vacuum going off in the background rather than that [most-_annoying]_ choice of 'shindig-themed' elevator jingle. What could've been an otherwise fine instructional video was virtually entirely ruined by not only the choice of 'music' here, but via its (totally unnecessary) interfering *VOLUME!* - taking almost complete center-stage over what you were trying to teach ... Thank _'Christ!'_ for closed-captioning!
Make up your mind next time!
Why not just tone it.. smh.
all the time and hard work just to make it look ugly again...
Yes, thanks for sharing your personal preference with everyone
